Thomas Gorman And Roark Xanthos Accused Of Torturing, Killing Snapping Turtle

Long Island, NY – On May 22, Thomas Gorman and Roark Xanthos, both 18, found a 12-pound snapping turtle on the side of the road. The pair transported the turtle to a friend’s house and asked if he wanted it, but the friend declined. According to police, Gorman and Xanthos then waited around until said friend left the house. Once the coast was clear, the dynamic duo moseyed on out to the back yard and began constructing a fire pit with rocks. Once that little task was finished, they tossed the turtle into the pit, doused it with gasoline and lit a match. Once the turtle was nice and crispy, the sadistic twats decided to put it out of it’s misery by stabbing it through it’s shell with a metal pole. The morons then left the scene, leaving the turtle behind. The friend’s family called police after they discovered the turtle carcass in their yard. A necropsy performed on the critter also found that it was covered in melted plastic, leading Sgt. Bryan McMenemy of the Suffolk Police Fifth Squad to believe they left the turtle in a milk crate when they set it on fire. “It was probably two kids bored, don’t have anything better to do. It’s horrible.” Indeed, Sarge. Both were arrested last week and charged with animal cruelty and criminal trespass. A bond amount is unavailable at this time. If I had it my way, I’d smack ‘em each with a $5,000 cash fine for the tard eyebrows. (Seriously…that shit died with Vanilla Ice). And another $3,000 for even making me think about Ice this a.m. Assholes…

*spaz* There is NO reason for someone to even THINK of doing that! I'm glad that punishments for cruelty to cats/dogs/horses/other mammals is finally (slowly) moving forward and are being taken more seriously, but I doubt that cruelty to reptiles, amphibians, or birds will ever be treated as a real crime. Not right. They may have itty bitty brains, but they DO have a pain cortex!

That said, snapping turtles are mean mofos. My fifth grade teacher only had 3 fingers on one hand because he was a moron and tried to pick one up as a kid.

Edit: Wtf is wrong with their eyebrows? Is that something people do voluntarily or did some hideous accident happen to them?

There is actually a story on here from not long ago about someone who mistreated a crap load of amphibians. I'm too lazy to look it up though. Also, people do get punished for harming birds, especially parrots. But usually it has to be someone who has a lot of them, such as a breeder or a hoarder.

Also, parrots have big brains I will have you know ….My parrots are smarter than a LOT of people I know. My cockatoo can figure out how to get into and out of anything, for one. And my African Grey has conversations with us, I swear it! LOL

Haha, I was mostly talking about the reptiles and amphibians when I was talking about their brains…birds have decent-sized brains for their size, even if some of them are stupid as shit. Most of them aren't that dumb.

That said, I've seen people get away with ripping the wings off of live chickens for “fun”. The only cruelty cases I've ever seen pursued in the upper midwest have been about birds of prey or psittacines. Even keeping 200 doves in a tiny room where they were eating each other just got a $500 fine and a stern talking-to.

Fun bird fact: WI is the only state with a “Symbol of Peace”. We also have an extended hunting season for our “Symbol of Peace”.

Those who would do something like this to an animal would gladly do it to a person. Not that doing it to the animal wasn't bad enough. “Boredom” is no excuse for this kind of shit. You're bored? Go play a video game, watch a movie, surf for porn, jack off, or, heaven forbid, read a book. Most people find non-harmful ways to combat their boredom. I'd never think of doing something like this in a million years.

My mom had a snapping turtle as a pet just recently. His name was Pie because of the river she got him out of. He had to have been newly hatched when they got him because he was so tiny. He got huge and this damn turtle was so fat he looked like he was popping out of his shell. My mom freaking spoiled that turtle and then he started to get aggressive. He was a sweet turtle before hand. He would let my step dad scratch his chin like you would a cat or dog. Eventually he just got too big and got to be too much so they put him back in the wild. I was a little bummed but well it was understandable. He needed to be put back in his natural habitat. My mom probably should have never pulled him out of it to begin with but then we wouldn't of realized how smart and funny these turtles were and well of course mean, lol.

It's just sad that these two dumb fucks would do something like that to an interesting animal. Even if they are pretty mean.

When I was a kid and you found a snapping turtle. You had to tell an adult and the adult would kill it….. I also got a baby one and kept it as a pet. It would eat out of your hand. My asshole stepdad took it away from me and prolly killed it…. Gave me the sads:-(

When my mom was a kid, finding a snapping turtle that was of decent size was always an occasion to celebrate. Having a family of 14 meant that most meat that her parents could afford would be undesirable parts (hearts, livers, snouts, etc)…but when a big snapping turtle was found, one of the older boys would kill it quickly (NOT TORTURING IT, GAH) and they would have turtle soup that night. It was apparently really good, but I've never had it.

I know these kids personally, they are both my age and I was associated with both of them at one time or another (Although I didn't want to be). All I can say about them is that they have both always been very sick minded, and a lot of people out here in Bellport have waited for the day that they would do something like this so they could get put away in Jail.

It's sad very sad what happened to the turtle, I just wonder what kind of sick things they are going to try and do after they get out of jail.

That's assuming they even go to jail. People don't come out in droves to defend animals that aren't cute and furry…there won't be much pressure on the courts to give any punishment other than a slap on the wrist and a small fine. Even when there is massive pressure on the courts, people rarely get more than 10 days in jail unless the crime involved bestiality or has some sort of shock value that truly disgusts people.

I hope they do something illegal that ends up maiming them, but not seriously enough that they don't end up in prison for a long, long time. Maybe get in a car chase and wreck their vehicle. That would be nice. I've heard some wicked things about the NY prison system.

I know Roark personally, he's been like a brother to me since we were babies and our parents are best friends. He is definitely not a good kid, his parents have turned a blind eye on all the horrible things he does (drugs mainly) . They told us that he didn't do it, but he's sick like that and I'm sure he did. This is a disgusting, horrible thing. I really hope that he goes to jail. It's true, everyone has been waiting for something like this to happen. He's done shitty things to our family, and I hope he gets what he deserves.

There is 1 chicken named Mike from the 1950's that had it's head severed high and the brainstem and one ear remained. It lived for 18 months after getting “axed”, but only because his owner fed and watered it with an eyedropper. If not for that, it would have died sooner. It's in Ripley's and is the only documented case.

There is a difference between hunting and torture. I grew up in a town where hunting was a big deal. I got used to seeing moose hanging from tripods and cut open for all to see in 80% of the towns' backyards. None of them ever hunted for sport that I knew of and all of them had nothing but the utmost respect for the animals.

Hunting, even for sport, isn't about doing it to see the animal squirm. These 2 morons did it for the shits and giggles they got from watching the suffering that the turtle endured. I agree with CC in that people who can do what these 2 did are only a step below doing it to a child or a senior or a handicapped person. Maybe they won't, maybe they will learn their lesson, but I would never want them around my kids.

Actually, their neck wouldn't have been broken to kill them quickly. They would have been dipped into a hot water bath to HOPEFULLY kill them and aid in feather removal, which many survive. They are hung upside down and tortured terribly if they survive until they final step, which is when someone removes them from the hanger, discovers them alive and most likely whips them on the floor or against a wall to finish them. It's quite sad.

I am a meat eater though. The difference between you and I is that I RESPECT the animals that die to feed me. I do that by thanking them for every meal, by keeping myself educated in how they live and die and by seeing ALL animals as feeling creatures worthy of our protection.

When someone beats one of them, it's like beating a kid as far as I'm concerned. Animals are not here to be our amusement. Some animals even live with us as pets, and as so, deserve to be respected as another family member.

I hunt, and I eat meat. I do research on lab mice. And I always make sure the animals die QUICKLY. This turtle that was tortured did not have that privileged. This isn't like killing a fish or a crustacean where there's still debate on if they can feel pain…this thing suffered.

If ANYTHING, people should care because the vast majority of people who eventually abuse humans have animal abuse in their past! Among serial killers, the number approaches 100% in perpetrators that were interviewed (basically all of them in the past 25 years). Abusing animals is one of the key diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder. Child abuse, spousal abuse, and elder abuse is VERY common among those known to abuse animals.

There may be bigger crimes going on than killing a turtle, but if shits like these are allowed to continue with their sick games and their destructive masochistic thought processes are allowed to run unchecked, they WILL be back here with bigger crimes.

Awhile back someone posted these types of comments about a murdered puppy and it pissed me off. Granted,it was just a turtle. However, if they were going to kill it, then they should have eaten it and it should have been killed humanely. There is a big difference between killing an animal for food, and torturing an animal for kicks.
