Houston - Taylor Trostle is a 13-year-old student at Bleyl Middle School who wore a NYPD t-shirt to school recently. At the end of math class, she and some of her friends pretended to be cops with Trostle complementing the activity with the tried and true method of using the “Pew! Pew!” finger gun (I would have used “Pow! Pow!” but if you watch the video, she clearly used the “Pew! Pew!” technique…probably because she is a girl). She claims she was “shooting” markers on the board at the front of the class, but her teacher sent her to the principal’s office where Trostle was charged with…ready for it? Making terroristic threats. The teacher says that the finger gun was aimed at her and she was in fear for her life. According to Cy-Fair ISD’s code of conduct, a terroristic threat is a level four violation, which is on par with assault, public lewdness, or selling alcohol or drugs at school. Since the charge falls under the zero tolerance policy, the honor role student was suspended for three days, has one hell of a mark on her school record and is being harassed by her schoolmates. Her parents are rightfully upset. “I mean, terroristic threat, to me that’s a serious statement,” said Taylor’s mother. “That’s one of the most serious things you could say to somebody.”
You know, my kid fell victim to this zero tolerance bullshit back when he was in the 6th-grade. One of his friends let him hold a house key which he then bent into an “L” shape. They bent it back normal, but it still looked fucked up. The kid’s mother saw the key and asked him what happened to it and he stated his friend had bent it in class but that it still worked fine. But this mother wasn’t having it and called the school the next morning and informed them of what had happened. Long story short? My kid, an honor student, got suspended for three days for vandalism. There wasn’t a damn thing we could do about it, either. Even the principal felt like an ass, but her hands where tied as well with these stupid ass guidelines and zero-tolerance crap. No longer do educators treat a situation by determining the context, the students involved, and using their goddamn brain.
In a lot of cases, disciplinary measures are decided on by an A = B methodology as laid out in a student handbook. It’s asinine that bullying can continue to go on in schools until some chick hangs herself or some dude pops off a few rounds in a cafeteria – but elsewhere in these same schools, you have people getting suspended for writing on a desk. I Any teachers out there? Chime in…would love to hear your thoughts.
