La Grange, KY – Sunday morning, at about 9:00, Ashley Cox arrived at Roederer Correction Complex for visiting day. Ashley went through the check-in process and was allowed into the visiting area by about 10:00. At approximately 10:55, Ashley locked herself into a single-stalled restroom near the visiting room. When Ashely failed to reappear after about 10 minutes, officers grew concerned and knocked on the door. Ashley answered the door and she said she was fine, but the blood all over the bathroom floor said different. Ashley mumbled something about a miscarriage and an ambulance was called. When EMT’s showed up, Ashley said she was experiencing heavy bleeding, but didn’t specify why. Almost five hours later, hospital personnel called the prison to let administrators know Ashley hadn’t miscarried – she’d given birth to a full term baby.
After a thorough search of the prison, the newborn’s bloody body was found in a trash can, buried beneath a pile of paper towels. The baby girl had been born alive and was seemingly healthy before Ashley intentionally shoved toilet paper down her throat.
Prison officials stated that her pregnant belly was well concealed behind baggy clothing and at no point during the squishing out process, not even once, did Ashley call for assistance. She’s no stranger to the whole birthin’ thing, she has a 2-year-old daughter. What I don’t understand about these cases is this: How does one pop out a living human being without even the smallest grunt or peep? When I was in labor, the whole damn hospital was well aware of it. Ashley, 20, is being held on charges of first-degree murder and concealing the birth of an infant. Bail has been set at a hefty $3 million.
Authorities don’t know who fathered the child – Ashley is married, but in the final stages of divorce. A couple of news sources say the man she was visiting in jail was her boyfriend, but he can’t be the father because he’s been incarcerated for almost 11 months and conjugal visits aren’t allowed at that correctional facility.
