Teen Charged With Felony After Posting Girl’s Pic On Porn Site

OCALA, Fla. - 17-year-old Shannon Marie Mitchell had a grudge against her boyfriend’s 15-year-old ex-girlfriend. So she decided to wage a campaign of harassment whose ultimate goal would be to ruin the younger teen’s reputation. She started by taking the girl’s Myspace pics and posting them, along with her phone number, to an online porn site (from the video it looks like the porn site is actually 4chan). This action resulted in the young girl getting phone calls from strangers asking for sexual favors and more pics. Police were eventually brought in and Mitchell was questioned by investigators. The Vanguard High School senior did not seem to take things seriously when she was interviewed, admitting she did it and did not plan to stop harassing the girl. I’m guessing she started taking things seriously sometime after she was arrested on a felony charge of of aggravated cyberstalking of a victim younger than 16 years old and then transported to a Juvenile Assessment Center.

You would think kids would start figuring out that nothing they do online is anonymous. It’s not like the old days when bullying was nothing more than a he-said, she said type of thing. Online actions are snapshotted. Their actions logged. Their activities cached. Their identity easily uncovered. But whatever, let ‘em keep doing it. It gives me story material and highlights the insecure idiots, I guess. I’m digging Mitchell’s Myspace pics, though. Cute and she likes to party. Shannon, if you are ever up my way, stop by…I’d be more than happy to give you the creepiest 5 minutes of your life.

      Holy shit, 4chan is much worse than just some regular ol' porn site. That was just coldhearted.
      I don't see the pics as being felony worthy, but posting her phone number where anonymous could possibly figure out her address, that's just cruel.

      Ok, so it's all easily traced, it's mean and unjust, but frankly, no worse than spreading the rumour in the school bathroom that she is a slut and blows everyone, complete with the phone # on the wall. I suppose you could argue posting the phone # was a segway to danger. I just don't see the felony.
      Furthermore, she is 17 and not a legal adult. so the addition of 'victim younger than 16 years old'
      seems trumped.
      I am concerned that they are not letting children solve their own problems. The law is exacerbating it by throwing felonies around like candy. She needs some discipline, but not a felony.
      Lastly, there are always two sides to the story. I would be curious to see if she was one upping her.

      Could also be that the popo couldn't believe she wasn't scared when they came aknockin, so they decided to put the fear of god up her ass. Normally a visit from the popo will scare someone enough to act right. However, when you get some really belligerent white trash, sometimes only a trip to the pokey will do.

      That could be BL, and that is an effective technique. However, the way I read it they actually charged her with it instead of threatening to do it. Usually there is some noise about handing it to the DA and they make you soil your pants for a few weeks while he decides. I know this, it works :P

      This is much bigger than the bathroom wall. Bathroom walls can be painted over, and the audience is limited. It's local. They also don't include pictures, at least none worth worrying about. The internet is global. The exposure is huge, and really damaging things just never go away because someone copies them, mirrors them, emails them to friends, links to them, etc. I'm betting you can still find the homemade pornos Pam Anderson and Paris Hilton, and it's old, old news now.

      4Chan, really? I would rather have my pictures and number posted on the lewdest porn site there is rather than have that on 4Chan. 4Chan trolls are probably on the other side of insane and if there were ever people that I think would qualify for euthanasia, it would be them.

      I'd have to agree. This is basically like standing in front of the sex offenders registration office handing out fliers that say “this teen is easy give her a call!”
      And the other side of that is the fact that she posted it on 4chan. Why would she do that? Every time you hear about this teenage internet bashing lame shit it's either some fake myspace page or some comment on myspace or some created facebook group. There's only one reason this girl posted it to 4chan and it's not precedence.

      Stupid little bitch. I'm glad they threw the book at her, but I think that she's probably too dumb and egotistical to have learned her lesson. She could have gotten the 15 year old raped. Then I guess she would have been proud of herself.

      We have differing definitions of “felony”, then. Nonetheless, I don't really care if it's a felony or a misdemeanor, she should have the gravity of her actions explained to her in a meaningful and personally painful way, so she takes it to heart. The parent can't spank her, and I doubt at her age it would get through. The state can figuratively spank her, and I'd like to see that happen. I don't think jail is the right thing, just a huge fine and endless community service, and maybe being banned from the internet for a year (if only . . . )

      If Shannon is only 17 then why was her name and picture splattered all over the news? Don't they usually protect the identity of the juvenile unless they're being charged as an adult or am I wrong about that?

      Also, I am dumbfounded by this girl. She is an almost DEAD RINGER of my oldest daughter, who is 18. I'd SWEAR I had twins and didn't know it and one got misplaced if they were the same age. Except my daughter would be the prettier one of course :)

      Yeah, if she did what they say she did then I don't feel sorry that her name and face were put out there… Just curious if anyone knows the reason they were able to do so in this case.

      In trying to learn more about this story, I did find out that at least one news source has made a retraction:

      “CORRECTION: A 17-year-old girl charged with cyber stalking did not tell officials she would continue harassing her victim. Information obtained from a police report was incorrect.”

      I guess what Shannon said to the officers is that the VICTIM would not stop harassing HER and that was her reason for doing what she did.

      @ phyflyguy – the reason her name was gathered was that there is one piece of information that is public record (arrest affidavit??) that the public can pick up including media sources. The media than matched her name with her picture on myspace. I was also told it is because it is a felony count that they can get this information on a minor as well.

      @ phyflyguy – The arrest affidavit also stated that Shannon admitted to the police that she had never met the victim, that she had no recent contact by the victim, and that the victim did nothing to her such as threatening her, etc. Shannon did this without any provocation. She showed no remorse during her arrest or at any hearing, including the sentencing hearing.
