Kristy DeHuff Has Bad Dreams About The Car Rental People

Commerce Township, MI – Thursday morning, 25-year-old Kristy Leigh DeHuff was in the car with her husband and her 13-month-old son Drake as the family prepared to leave home to return their rental car, but she suddenly announced she had to run in to do something and returned into the house with her son. When she failed to return, Mr. DeHuff went inside to find his wife stabbing their son with a butcher knife. He was able to intervene and begin caring for the boy. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Kristy DeHuff covered in blood and little Drake with a slit throat and two stab wounds to the upper torso. The baby got rushed to the hospital and Ms. DeHuff got rushed to jail, where she’s now facing a charge of assault with intent to murder. And what led to Drake DeHuff now lying in a hospital with a punctured lung? Kristy DeHuff told investigators she had a dream the night before in which the people at the car rental facility killed her son, so she figured she better take care of the job herself.

Little Drake has been through surgery, is in stable condition, and could be released from the hospital as early as next week. As for his mom, she has no criminal history, and her family says that she’s never had any mental health issues…until the last week, during which she is reported to have begun having delusions. Those on Kristy’s side insist this is completely out of character for her and clearly represents a mental breakdown of some sort, but of course, some commenters on the news sites are pooh-poohing “the mental health defense” and calling for Kristy’s head. Denizens, what say you?

I'm thinkin something happened to her she's not the normal nutcase and her age is above when either schizophrenia or schizaphrenic dementia shows up, this would truly be an odd one, I'm sure they will have a host of chem tests done on her
  • AlwaysInFlyoverCountry
It's not quite that cut and dried, Katz. The British Journal of Psychiatry published a study on schizophrenia in which they determined the peak ages of onset for women were between 26 and 32. She could quite easily be schizophrenic.

UPDATE TODAY;;6:46 pm,,,,,,,,NOVI, Mich. (AP) — A 25-year-old Oakland County woman accused of stabbing her 1-year-old son several times with a butcher knife has been found incompetent to stand trial.

District Judge Robert Bondy in Novi on Wednesday ordered Kristy Leigh DeHuff to be transferred to a psychiatric facility near Ypsilanti for treatment.

Defense lawyer Richard A. Foster says Friday that DeHuff suffered a psychotic breakdown before the attack. He said he's hopeful that with treatment she'll regain competency and be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Authorities said DeHuff stabbed her son Feb. 4 at their Commerce Township home, about 25 miles northwest of Detroit. The baby's father stopped the attack.

The child underwent surgery. Family members tell WJBK-TV that he is recovering well.

I didnt personally know this girl, but my boyfriend's cousin used to date her for a while, and he said he didnt think she was the type of person to do something like this. He also dated her like 5 years ago, so who knows how she is now. thats pretty crazy though.

Baby Drake has been released from hospital but in a twist he has been released to his paternal grandparents custody b.c Social Services said his dad failed to protect him,,.Commerce Township, Mich. -- A 13-month-old baby from Commerce Township who police said was stabbed by his mother has been released from the hospital.

Kristy DeHuff, 25, was arraigned at Novi's 52-1 District Court on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder last Friday afternoon.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said DeHuff's husband found her stabbing their son in a back bedroom of their home in the 3000 block of Brookneal Street just before noon Thursday.Bouchard said the couple was leaving to run an errand when DeHuff told her husband she needed to go back into the house for something and took the baby with her.

After a few minutes, the husband went into the home and found DeHuff stabbing the baby.

The baby was stabbed in the neck and upper torso three times with a kitchen butcher knife, Bouchard said.

The baby was treated at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. One of the child’s stab wounds reportedly punctured his lung.

The child was released into the care of his paternal grandparents. Child Protective Services said the father failed to protect the baby.

"My heart is broken, her mother's heart is broken," said DeHuff's father, Kevin Colvin, outside of the courtroom last week. "Kristy, Blake and Jake were the most awesome family I have ever seen."

Bouchard said DeHuff told her husband she was stabbing the baby because she heard something in a dream that told her to do it.

DeHuff's attorney, Richard Foster, said his client realized what had happened later that evening.

"When I spoke to her last night she was very emotional and very upset by what happened. Jake is the love of her life," said Foster.

DeHuff has no history of mental illness, but her family believes she had some sort of mental breakdown.

"Kristy is a kind and loving person, always has been her whole life. She is very soft and generous to everyone around her. It's unimaginable that she could do that to the baby -- she loved him so much," said Colvin.

DeHuff remains lodged at the Oakland County Jail and a forensic physiological exam has been ordered .http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/22478907/detail.html
  • I agree with the mentally ill conclusion, only a crazy woman would paint her house Smurf Blue. And I think she should be locked away for the rest of her life, in a straight jacket, eating applesauce through a straw.
  • melb1970
Um- let's simplify- if you're crazy enough to stab your own child chances are you are a REALLY BIG threat to society and certainly to your close kin. What should be done with hazards to society- remove them from society.
I would personally love to remove this freak from the gene pool

Well they just had a update on Drake ,its not on the website yet but hes walking around eating and talking.Considering his throat was slashed the drs are amazed and hes going home with daddy anytime in the next few days.

  • lovingmother
I think the women needs to be hung all this bull crap of mental issues... anyone can kill sosmone and say i was messed p in the head and get a phyicatric doctor to prove it.. i think its the easy way out... bull crap if you ask me.. i know kristy personally WAAS friends with her until this happened grew up with her and her husband my entire life adn she needs to be locked up for life.
  • AlwaysInFlyoverCountry
It isn't quite as simple as you present it. Certainly one may claim mental illness as the reason for a crime -- but absent a proven history it is a hard case to prove. To quote Wikipedia:

According to an eight-state study the insanity defense is used in less than 1% of all court cases and is only successful in 26% of cases. Of those cases that were successful, 90% of defendants had been previously diagnosed with mental illness.

Totally could be postpartum psychosis. If you haven't been through it, you have NO IDEA how much that can completely and totally alter your psyche to the point that you are not even YOU anymore. If indeed she was suffering PPP and her family knew that she was delusional, they should have IMMEDIATELY contacted her doctor and gotten help for her. Even if she said she was okay, she would have no appropriate frame of reference for determining that for herself. PPP is nothing to fuck around with. It is real and it can be absolutely devastating.

Drake may be leaving hosp as soon as Tuesday with dad.Hes out of ICU and doing really good
  • Concerned
    Do you know the family?
  • whisperswing
No I live by there and its been all the news here.Im hoping that at 4 there will be an update. He may have gone home already. They said it was soon as hes eating talking and playing alot better then even the drs thought he would be so soon.
  • Captain Howdy
    So glad to hear that.
  • Lizard
    Thank you, whisper.
  • absynthe
so if they knew she was delusional why did they not seek help for her?
  • AlwaysInFlyoverCountry
That's a very good question. I don't have an equally good answer.

fuck all of u on this site. no one has the power to judge a person u are not fucking doctors or even have the correct facts about this situation. all of u should get a mother fucking life and not worrie about someone elses unless u are trying to help them the victims, or prevent such an incedent accuring in the future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Trin
DON'T YOU JUDGE ME JONSEN!!! U DON'T HAVE THE POWER!!!!

laughing my ASS off at you, seriously.
  • AlwaysInFlyoverCountry
no one has the power to judge a person

People do it all the time. we call them "juries".

even have the correct facts about this situation.

Please elucidate. We want to know the correct facts about this situation.

prevent such an incedent accuring in the future

I found myself in a bad way two and a half years ago. I realized it by reading stories like this. I got help.

If this story helps one person see that he or she needs help the way I needed help, is it worthwhile having it here?

Thanks, Al. Nicely and gently said.

But, jonsen, let's be accurate in our language use--a fact is, on its own, correct, or it is NOT a fact. You seem to be suggesting there are aspects of this case about which we do not know. Please, as Alf said, tell us what we don't know.
  • Lizard
Considering that you sound about 14 years old, I'll refrain from suggesting that YOU fuck off. And guess what? We can judge whoever the fuck we want. As far as our activities helping victims or trying to prevent such occurrences in the future, it's clear that the purpose of this site goes right over your apparently empty head.

I knew a meth addict whose long term usage led to auditory hallucinations (a common side effect of that drug) and his voices talked him into shooting and killing his brother-in-law. On the other hand, the onset of schizophrenia is often in young adulthood. Used to work with psyche patients, and so many of them heard voices telling them to kill themselves or family members...
  • Peaches4You
I don't think it would be PPD when the baby is that old. I had very bad PPD, but it went away by the time he was 6 months. Who knows though, maybe she was honestly mentally ill. She did tell her family that she was having delusions. And that is where I stop and say what?? If she was hearing voices and shit why would her husband let her be alone with the baby at all? Why would he allow her to take the baby out of the car to go back in the house if she was noticeably off her nut?
  • petrinasez
    mmmmmmm. trashcat...
  • uniquemommy1984
Baby was 13 months old, what a year and one month? There is more to this story then we are being told I bet. I don't buy the mental defense either.
  • Dakota Valkyrie
Without anything, at this point, saying she was using drugs, I can see and agree with a mental illness defense. Despite what people think, iinsanity defense is a hard one to use successfully. Depending on the law there, she may not "get away with it".

Luckily, this occurred in Michigan - the first state to institute "Guilty But Mentally Ill" (GBI).
    .
If a defendant is found guilty but mentally ill or enters a plea to that effect which is accepted by the court, the court shall impose any sentence that could be imposed by law upon a defendant who is convicted of the same offense.

    http://www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%28gn0f14irgg...

She will get both treatment and prison if found GBI.
  • Tyrant_Ashur
I tend to dislike the mental health defense. But that's because I don't see a death sentence as a punishment so much as removing a threat to others. And frankly, DeHuff's children are no safer for their mother being a crazy bitch than they would be if she was just mean.

Crazy or sane, murderers have to die.
  • malq
I have to agree with that last comment tyrant. We could be brothers.

I dont care what the excuse is, The child was stabbed with a butcher knife.
    Wait don't they hack?
  • defenestratethis
If her dllusional thinking is for real, I'd wonder if shes doing meth.
  • butterbutt
That woman is bat shit crazy if she thinks anyone would buy that freakin story! I mean, IF she had a dream that someone at the car rental place was gonna hurt her baby, why wait till your on your way there and say... oh yeah, I had a dream someone was gonna hurt my baby... so I guess its better me to do it than them. I guess I'll go back in the house and take care of it myself...

If I had a dream someone was gonna hurt my baby... I don't know, maybe I would avoid that person or maybe just realize it was a stupid dream.

After reading this site for awhile, you learn just how mean and evil some people can be! I bet its more like her and hubby had argument, and how else do you get back at partner? you stab the baby. And stupid bitch came up with lame ass excuse of the dream...

It just wouldn't surprise me at all. Especially if she has never showed any signs of mental illness. That would just be such an extreme break down.
  • wishfulsinful
    Could be delayed post-partum depression...
  • uniquemommy1984
I was thinking that too but I went through PPD for a year and I wasn't violent towards my child.
  • defenestratethis
More like Postpartum Psychosis, Id think. Thers a big difference.
  • She's going to get away with this, isn't she?
    Sigh.
