Girl, 12, Allegedly Raped In Middle School Stairwell By Boy, 14

El Cerrito, Calif – A 14-year-old boy has been charged with rape and false imprisonment of a 12-year-old girl in the stairwell of Portola Middle School. 7th period classes were in session when two students walked into the stairwell and witnessed the assault taking place. One student then notified school resource officer, while the other physically interceded. The 14-year-old was arrested a a few hours later at his home in Richmond, California. Principal Denise VanHook and assistant principal Matthew Burnham were placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into why the boy and girl were unsupervised during the school day, Marin Trujillo, a school district spokesman, said. The policy of placing school officials on paid leave stems from the gang rape of a girl outside a school dance – 5 miles from this school. Portola Middle School is the same school that had the incident in May involving several students who threw rocks at a music teacher, hitting her and knocking her to the ground after she refused them entry to a classroom.
