Orlando, FL – I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, Sanchia Rae Xavier-Velez, 28, should have had her uterus removed about, oh, 3-4 pregnancies ago. Seems Sanchia has a history of unwanted pregnancies – she gave one child up for adoption as a teen, contemplated aborting her now 7-year-old daughter, and underwent an abortion two years ago. After all that, you would think that she’d have enough common sense to take the necessary precautions to prevent further unwanted pregnancies, right? Wrong. Sanchia found herself a victim of yet another unwanted pregnancy this year. On November 3rd, Jazmyne Rayne Gowers-Velez entered the world. Baby girl didn’t get to stick around long, though. The incubator drowned her in the toilet. Sanchia claims Jazmyne was stillborn – a doctor found evidence to the contrary.
The investigation into Jazmyne’s death began on November 3rd, when Sanchia showed up at a hospital with a dead baby in a backpack. She told hospital staff that she had delivered the stillborn child at home. When interviewed by detectives, Sanchia informed them that she had recently been fired, had no insurance, couldn’t qualify for any government assistance, and the baby’s father was working out of state. She told officers that she had put her 7-year-old to bed the night before and was contemplating just how the hell she was going to pay for everything, when she felt the need to pee. While sitting on the toilet, she felt the urge to push and did so. Plop! Baby! Sanchia went on to explain that after she delivered the child, whose little face she could see in the toilet bowl, she passed out in the bathtub where she remained for about three hours. When she came to, she took the dead baby out of the toilet, cut the umbilical cord, washed her up in the tub and wrapped her in a bath mat. She then cleaned up and took a nap. When asked why she didn’t seek medical help, Sanchia responded, “That’s not how I respond to things.” She told officers that she didn’t feel she could drive and she couldn’t call for help because her cell phone was shut off. After her nap, Sanchia placed the dead baby in the trunk of her car and got her 7-year-old off to school. Then she found the time to get to the hospital. “God forbid I killed my baby because she was moving, but she wasn’t moving when she was in that toilet,” she claimed. A doctor who examined the tiny 4lb., 5oz. body told investigators that the infant had been breathing before she died – her lungs were expanded and she had an air bubble in her stomach, indicating that she had been gasping for air. She also had water in her lungs.
A search of Sanchia’s apartment revealed a complete lack of any baby-related items; no crib, no diapers, no formula, no baby clothes. Sanchia had an excuse for that, too. She said that she had bought a crib and car seat a month before, but returned them to the store when she needed money. One of her friends told detectives that she had no idea Sanchia was even pregnant. And the boss who just fired her? He told detectives that had he known she was pregnant, she wouldn’t have been let go. She is now being charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. A prime candidate for mandatory sterilization, if you ask me. Hell, I’d even split the cost…
