Girl Killed By Elderly Driver As She Stepped Off School Bus

MARIETTA, Georgia – On Wednesday, Gloria Valazquez was watching as her daughter, 5-year-old Karla Campos, was getting off her school bus after attending a day at Mountain View Elementary. Without warning, 82-year-old Edith M. Anderson passed the stopped bus on the right, ran up onto the curb and into the grass stricking Karla. Anderson kept on going. Karla was rushed to Scottish Rite Hospital, where she later died. Anderson, who is free on bond, now faces vehicular homicide charges. Let me tell you…two of the worst kind of drivers I experience on a daily basis are people from South Carolina and old people. In fact, they are almost indistinguishable. If I happen to come across an elderly person from South Carolina it’s like watching a scarier version of Mr. Magoo.

read what the neighbors said about the curve-too many drivers take that curve too fast...
The bus had its lights on and another stopped car was behind the bus.

This woman apparently could not handle these conditions and should not have been driving.

One thing that irks me with elderly drivers is when they say its their right to drive. Driving is not a right!

Age doesn't just bring eye and reflex problems, it also intensifies under lying health issues. My grandpa(69) was on his way to pick my sisters son up from daycare on Christmas eve and he had a massive heart attack that killed him instantly. I thank god every day (even though I don't believe in any one religion) that he was pulling out of the driveway when it happened. He had just put the car back into drive so the car ended up slamming into a big old pine tree in their yard and no one else was injured. It's could have been so much worse then it was and I'm thankful that no one else was hurt.

My grandma has been in and outta the hospital for the last year and last month moved herself into a retirement place. She can barely walk but somehow has no problems driving even in a busy city. It's the one thing she misses the most, but she also realizes she shouldn't be driving with her hip problems. The place she moved into doesn't allow anyone to have a vehicle and they have a little bus that will take them where ever they need to go. I'm just glad I never had to deal with taking something from them, as they raised me and I would never want to be made to feel I deprived them of anything.

I feel for both parties involved in this one.

i wasnt gonna post on this one but after readin Athena’s post and seein ‘G-Unit’ i had to giggle cuz my 1st thought was “what’s 50 Cent doin with a minivan?” it didnt dawn on me she was talkin bout her Gramma…lol

    very good indeed... this however....
she's scared death that I’m going to suddenly wipe out a family of four, and she’s going to be sued for it.”
made me really laugh... i think me and athena are related because that's my G-unit too!!!!

Because the insurance company is being difficult and I’m a broke ho, I’m borrowing the G-Unit’s minivan

Also, based on the facts so far, I actually agree that vehicular homicide may be the appropriate charge. It’s the same as vehicular manslaughter, which is basically being negligent behind the wheel.
The crux of the issue to me is what was being discussed above…the fact that many elderly people should not be driving anymore and should be tested on a regular basis.

And she should indeed be held accountable for that negligence. Her story is a lot like that of George Weller, the old fart who killed 12 people at a farmers' market in LA. The judge in that case was unmoved by the "pedal error" excuse. He wanted to sentence Weller to prison, but he was forced into giving him probation because of health issues. If her attitude is anything like that of George Weller, I hope she ends up doing actual prison time. It would probably kill her, but that's life. She needs to pay for what she did and not be treated with kid gloves because of her age.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. I will reserve my judgment on the old lady until the final story comes out...until then, here's part of an article copied directly from the local news station site that I trust the most in Atlanta:

Police say speeding, alcohol and drugs played no role.

Instead, they say Anderson panicked when she came up on the stopped school bus and cars and made a tragic mistake.

"She stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake and veered off to the right," says Cobb County Police Officer Joe Hernandez, "That combination caused her to lose control of her vehicle."

No one answered the door of Edith Anderson's Roswell apartment when 11 Alive stopped by Thursday afternoon.

After being booked at the Cobb County Jail Wednesday night, she got out on $5,000 bond shortly before midnight.

Karla Campos' uncle says he's not upset with Anderson, but does think she should not be on the road at her age.

"That makes the question how old we should be when we cannot drive no more," he says.

The Cobb County community is already pouring out its hearts to the Campos family.

As far as the charges go, we'll see if they indeed prosecute her for vehicular homicide. FYI, Cobb County is notorious for being rabid in its prosecution of everyone for everything. I have lived in this county my entire life and they don't fuck around. I hate that this child was killed, I really do, but I still think this is simply a case of a woman who probably had no business being behind the wheel.
  • Veronica
Well, Veronica, I guess you know more about the case than the journalists covering the story for all the local news stations here. She didn’t try to “pass the bus” –she was coming around a curve and the bus was stopped ahead of the curve. When she went to hit her brakes, she pressed the gas instead, the ran up on the sidewalk, striking the little girl. You also stated this was a hit and run, which is untrue. She stopped and stayed at the scene until cops and paramedics arrived. It was a tragic accident, ACCIDENT being the key word here. I don’t know this woman and have no personal reason to defend her. I am simply basing my reaction on the actual facts of the case, not jumping to erroneous conclusions involving elderly entitlement and desires to run down children.

You know, I am all about throwing around obscenities regarding the scumbags on this site who rape children and kill their girlfriends and fuck their dogs, but an old lady who may not be in full possession of all her faculties and reflexes? A little overboard.

And to uh oh–if you will re-read what I posted, I said that the driver who plowed into the front of the gas station was not elderly and made the same mistake the woman in this case did (hitting gas instead of brake).

Did you read Morbid's write-up? It says she didn't stop. Not that she comes out looking much rosier even if she did stop, though.

I did a little googling, and it didn't take me long to find out that she refused to talk to anyone and had a pissy attitude. Seen her mug shot? She looks haughty and...inconvenienced. So yeah, fuck her. You're not immune from responsibility because you can't tell the difference between the brake and the gas pedal, and you'd think that having KILLED A FIVE-YEAR-OLD, she's be a bit more contrite, hmm?

Also, maybe you could explain why she is being charged with vehicular homicide if she was without fault and it was just a "tragic accident?" The vehicular homicide charge is, indeed, an "actual fact" of the case reflecting her negligence and responsibility in the girl's death. She is not being charged with some secondary traffic violation, for good reason. So spare me the implication that I'm not interested in the "facts" of the case when you are completely ignoring that huge fucking elephant in the room.

And when did I say that she "desired" to run down children? Classic strawman. Nice try, though.

VelvetGlove, Uh I'm thinking that 82 is considered elderly...?
  • Veronica
I saw the local news update on the case this evening, and it was just a tragic accident. She wasn’t speeding or doing anything else wrong.

Really? You should probably tell that to the prosecutor, who charged her with vehicular homicide.
Apparently, the bus was stopped in a place where you couldn’t see it from far away, and she came up on it and then hit the gas instead of the brakes.

You certainly are very willing to justify passing a school bus on the right, which even the biggest dumbass knows you're not supposed to do. Either this bitch doesn't care, or she's so senile that for all intents and purposes she's stupider than your average total dumbass. And not knowing the difference between the gas pedal and the brakes is not an excuse, it's proof that she shouldn't have been on the road in the first place.

I am sure she is devastated.

Good. She should be. I hope it haunts her every second for the rest of her miserable fucking life. I see your point, though, nothing says "remorse" like a fucking HIT AND RUN.

Anyway, it’s just a very sad thing that happened, regardless of the cause.

Actually, the prosecutors seem very interested in the cause, none of which have a valid excuse. Senile is not an excuse, and neither is distraction or impatience or the sense of entitlement that so often characterizes the elderly.

This woman killed a five-year-old little girl who had her whole life ahead of her. If you want to feel sorry for the stupid old cunt, be my guest. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that she doesn't get away with what she did.
  • defenestratethis
Ill say it again....When I die I want to go in my sleep just like grandpa, NOT screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.
  • missycaro
My daughter use to ride the special education bus and it takes longer for her to get off the bus. One day my husband was getting her off the bus when this old bastard started honking his horn because it was "taking too long". My husband was like what the fuck, but the old man just waved and took off.

Then as she careened toward the bus, she panicked and jerked the wheel, causing the vehicle to run up on the sidewalk. I am sure she is devastated. I suppose it's up for debate as to whether this was age-related...a couple of years ago, about 2 miles from my house, the front of a gas station got plowed into and destroyed by someone parking, then hitting the gas pedal on accident. This was not an elderly driver. Anyway, it's just a very sad thing that happened, regardless of the cause.

I have a crazy old uncle, about 85-ish. He's not exactly senile, but he wasn't really all there to begin with and age is just exacerbating his, er, personality. He runs over a kid a few years ago (teenager; said kid survived with minimal physical trauma), and his family decides, hey, maybe it's time he gave up driving. You know, before he kills someone.

They break the news to him as gently as possible, and it goes over about like you'd expect. I'm a veteran, how dare you treat me this way, etc.

I'm not too clear on the details, because we don't talk about this. But guns were involved. His daughter takes him out to a doctor's appointment, and his grandsons come in and clear out as much of his arsenal as they can find before broaching the no-driving subject again.

This is a small cluster of towns in rural Indiana, mind. I went out with my grandpa to the bank a few years ago, and we ran into another old codger he knew. "Thought you ain't s'posed to be driving," says Grandpa.

The old guy gets a twinkle in his eye, and says, "Shhhh."

It'd be nice if we could get all kinds of dangerous drivers off the road, but it seems like a driving test is only a small formality for some people.
  • Veronica
He said if we took his license away, he may as well die.

This is such a blatant attempt at manipulation that I fear I would have laughed in his face, which is probably not the result he was hoping for. Seriously, are you sure your grandfather isn't Fred Sanford? LOL.

Old people are renowned not only for their manipulation skills, but their epic fretting and guilt-trip skills as well. I really don't mind humoring them to a certain degree, but not when they are behind the wheel of a car. I know that sounds condescending, but a lot of old people like to play dumb to achieve their own ends, so I really don't feel bad about it...
  • A couple months ago, my car got totalled in a traffic accident (I was rear-ended by a guy going 35mph). Because the insurance company is being difficult and I'm a broke ho, I'm borrowing the G-Unit's minivan. Of course, because the G-Unit is 82, paranoid like a tweeker and suffering from what may very well be hints of dementia, she INSISTED I take legal possession of the van until I settle with insurance and buy a new car because she's afraid that, should I get into an accident (never in my life have I caused an accident), my insurance won't cover it and people will sue her for everything she owns. I am literally going to be borrowing the van for less than a month at this point.

So, I head down to the licensing place, and she insists on meeting me there. She's sitting inside, rockin' her cane and she's got her handicap parking tag sticking out of her purse. She says, "Don't worry, honey, just walk up to that nice lady there and she'll take care of everything," like I haven't been going to the same licensing place annually for the last 10 years. I'm all sorts of embarrassed. Not only do I LOATHE borrowing anything from anyone, but I've got her making a spectacle of it, to boot.

I walk up to the counter, and the lady is like, "She's gifting this to you, so you don't have to pay taxes..." and she's looking at me like I'm a mooch of a fucking grandkid. So I lean over and whisper, "I'm just borrowing the van - I'll be giving it back in, like, three weeks. I've got insurance on it, but she's scared to death that I'm going to suddenly wipe out a family of four, and she's going to be sued for it." This middle-aged woman sits back a bit and peers over my shoulder at the G-Unit, with a look of understanding on her face. She shoves her reading glasses back up, leans in and whispers, "And she thinks she should be driving?"

I love my grandmother with every fiber of my being. She provided unconditional support to us kids growing up; she is a brilliant and hardworking woman, and a fierce matriarch. But, by god, she is a NIGHTMARE behind the wheel, and I couldn't help but feel vindicated by the cashier's comment.

...and I agree wholeheartedly with Veronica's first post.

My father is 86-years old and stopped driving about a year ago. According to him, this is the worst thing that has ever happened to him. Never mind that my mother (his wife for 40 years) died 2 years ago, somehow losing his license is THE WORST thing in his life.

He had an accident and he was at fault and his license was suspended until he passed a vision test. The last time he went for a vision test, the eye doctor gave him the OK, even though he failed the test! So this time, I just refused to take him in for the eye test and cancelled the insurance and sold the car.

    I think he hates me…

I am glad my grandmother and I see eye to eye on this issue, so I know that it's not just me being insensitive to or ignorant of the feelings and thought processes of older people. Her POV is that she can understand being upset by the loss of independence, but at the same time, that is BOUND to happen if you're human and not only that, at best it's rather self-absorbed and self-indulgent to dwell on that at the expense of realizing that you are putting other people in danger.

I am all for yearly testing of drivers over the age of 65. I have inlaws who freak out about this, but if you rode in the car across town you would shit your pants. There is nothing that can be done-because they put up a good front right now. Guess what they drive in Georgia. I truely believe they will allow you to drive in Ga. till you are 2 months past dead.
  • eracsurfer
I'm going through the denial phase with my father right now. We just broke the news to him that he can't go home from the nursing home.
Understandably, he took that very hard.
A few days later, he asked if we paid his car insurance bill, we had to tell him that we dropped it since he wasn't able to drive. He said if we took his license away, he may as well die.

Hell, once I had to fly to Georgia to drive him back to PA because he was all over the road on the trip down with my son and my sister. And he had the nerve to be pissed at ME for doing it.

I can understand him being upset about staying in the home, but honestly he hadn't driven the car in the 6 months prior to going into the hospital.

Do you suppose I should break it to him that we signed over his car to my sister?
  • Veronica
In Denmark they have mandatory tests every two or three years after one hits seventy. My father didn’t even take the test. He reckoned it was probably about time he hung up his driving gloves. I was personally delighted that he had so much self-knowledge.

My grandmother is British, and she has said many times that in her opinion, this idea that old people should be deferred to at all costs and are entitled to do whatever the hell they want is mostly an American phenomenon. Older people SHOULD know when to hang it up, like your father. I really don't give a shit about their egos.

My grandmother has also predicted that the baby boomers will prove to be the most insufferable generation of elderly people the world has ever seen. *Shudder*
  • Veronica
Honestly, considering what one sees on the road every day, everyone should have mandatory driving test (and written test) every few years. Cost taxpayers less in the long run!

I would support that. At least then the AARP couldn't bitch about "age discrimination." However, if that's not possible, one could make a valid case that older people should be singled out because of the cold, hard fact that physical and mental faculties decline significantly after a certain age.

I totally agree with your grandmother. Mandatory yearly driver's test for drivers over 65. It wouldn't hurt, though I imagine there might be some hurt feelings over the fact that some of them will be denied a license but I'd prefer a few hurt feelings over the deaths of people especially when it could have been prevented.

I know numerous elderly people who still have their licenses but can hardly see what's in front of them because their eyesight is so bad or their coordination is way off. They are accidents waiting to happen :[

This kind of thing pisses me off to no end. If she really is just extremely senile and unable to understand what she did, she should be forced into a nursing home, the quality of which, of course, will be determined by how much money she or her family has. I really don't give a shit, just get her off the streets. If, however, she is a mean, cranky old coot with an entitlement compolex like the asshole who killed 12 people at that farmers' market a few years back, then throw her pathetic old ass in jail.

You know, my 75-year-old grandmother lives in Florida is actually still a really good driver, and as such she thinks that there should be mandatory yearly driver's tests for drivers over 65. Why? Because she has to deal with senile drivers who shouldn't be anywhere NEAR a car on a daily basis. So it's not simply an issue of "discriminating" against seniors. It's "discriminating" against people who shouldn't be on the fucking road, period. If she wasn't capable of driving, she should have been responsible enough to stop. It shouldn't have had to come to this, killing a kindergartner.

Seriously, I wish I could punch this old bitch in the fucking face. Better yet, let the parents of the dead girl do it. Is the life of the five-year-old worth more than that of this geezer? You're damn straight, it is.

Add Utah drivers to the list of awful....I was so happy when I left there. Personally, I think when everyone turns 60 they ought to have to surrender their lisense for a seeing eye dog and a freaking bus pass!

Everyday on my way home I have to stop for a school bus that has the red lights flashing and the stop sign. I guess they dont teach you in drivers ed that you are supposed to stop there. And for a reason.

Atleast once a week somebody goes around on the right and almost hits a kid about to cross the street because they dont understand why all of us are waiting for something.

I find myself saying "This is not far from where I live" here a lot, so I guess the Atlanta area must have more than its fair share of nimrods. Marietta is the city I grew up in, and the location of this incident is about 15 minutes from me. I said all that to get to my point...NOBODY around here can drive worth a shit. We have the rudest, yet stupidest, drivers around. There are really not many Atlanta natives here anymore, and I constantly have people who have moved here from other regions tell me how very very sucky the traffic and the drivers are here. I believe it. I've gotten to where I can't stand getting out on the road because I know some asswipe is going to tailgate me, or cut me off and I'm going to have to shoot 'em a bird from my minivan window. I don't know if this old lady here was of the asshole driver or old and senile variety. Will continue to watch the reporting on the local news to find out.
