Billy Dean Riley Didn’t Heed The Warning – Now He’s Dead

Cushing, OK – Donna Jackson called 911 early FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews morning to report that she was home alone and a crazy drunk-sounding guy was screaming threats at her and attempting to break into her home. The 57-year-old woman informed the would-be burglar that she was on the phone with police, and she also mentioned that she was armed. (Donna was packin’ a 16-gauge shotgun). That wasn’t much of a deterrent – he was still outside, trying to get in. He kept yelling something about his truck and kept calling for someone named Pat. Donna begged dispatch to get someone out there post haste – she didn’t want to shoot the man, but by god, she would if necessary. “They need to hurry. He’s going to break this thing open. When he does, I’ll have to kill him and I don’t want to kill him,” she told the dispatcher. “I don’t want to have to kill this man, but I’ll kill him graveyard dead ma’am.” Ha! I love this lady.

If you listen to the 911 call, you can hear the man yelling and banging on the door, hell, it made me a little nervous just hearing it – yet Donna remained rather calm for the duration of the call. Until, that is, the man actually made entrance into the home by busting through the patio door. At that point, you can hear the phone drop and the gun go off. After taking care of business, Donna got back on the phone, “I shot him. I’m going out front. I hit him. God help me,” Donna said. “Please dear God. I think I killed him. Please Father in heaven, oh my god.” The man, 53-year-old Billy Dean Riley, died on the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest. It is believed that he was under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a combination of the two. Investigators say Riley, who has about 20 years worth of alcohol and drug convictions, and his sister had been driving near the Donna’s house when Riley landed his truck in a ditch. Authorities later found his 45-year-old sister, Patricia Totty, passed out in the passenger seat of that truck – it’s believed that drugs and alcohol may have played a factor in her unconsciousness. She was transported to a hospital and is said to be in good condition.

  • In a trembling voice, Jackson on Tuesday said she did not want to comment.

"I’m not willing to talk about this. Please do me a favor and think of that other family,” Jackson said.

You don't want to be shot dead during commission of a violent crime against others? Well then, don't do that.

This lady has my respect. She wanted none of this. She asked for none of this. These things were forced upon her in the dead of night, as if she would meekly allow her life to be trampled on and possibly taken.

I know too many people who sadly think that it would be better to go down in flames rather than dare harm another person. That sort of thinking gets good people killed. This woman was having none of that. Why? SHE is good people, and she knows it. She knows her life and those of her loved ones is worth fighting for. She knows life is not negotiable, in that sense. Certainly not under threat by felons.

She's alive because she worked with those she loved to ensure she was prepared, trained and capable of stopping a violent threat. She knew she had the ability and showed the sort of moral strength and conviction that she was right, right to stand up and defend her life. She valued life enough to defend it. Not everyone values it sufficiently highly to do what's required in such dire circumstances.

To the woman: You done good. You did what's right. You will be in my prayers and thoughts, in the hope that you get through this surrounded by those you respect and love.

  • 10 minutes into the call, she shoots him. 10 minutes after that, police arrive.

My opinion is that she did exactly what she had to do. Homeowners don't arm themselves in order to run from their homes or cower in bathrooms, nor should they have to. If someone comes beating their way into my house I'm not going to ask for a written statement from them citing what they are on at the moment. I'm also not going to wait around and find out whether they themselves are armed or not.

The moral of this story: Don't go cold drunk busting through someone's back door.

I feel for her, she was so frightened, and in the end, devastated by what she had to do. I dont understand why it took so long for the police to arrive, but then again, in times like that, a single moment goes on forever. She sounds like a good soul with a big heart. Shes close to my age, and I know what it feels like to be alone, middle-aged, and unable to run or think as fast as ya used to...but she showed remarkable presence of mind. His choices led him there...and its all a game of russian roulette when youre in the drug life, aint it?

Incidentally, I was surprised that they didn't edit out the phone numbers she gave, and the location of her flipping spare key! Jeez. They'll need a new hiding place...although I don't think anyone is going to be breaking in while she's home.

Oh, that was SO sad. It's one thing to know that you're protecting yourself and doing what you have to do...but to actually have to kill someone else...I can't imagine. I hope she's able to get past this. I would imagine you could wind up with some serious PTSD from something like this. I about cried, myself, when she said, "Oh, his FAMILY." :( She sounds so heart-broken about it.

I'm from Oklahoma and Cushing is a pretty small town. Don't know what kind of law enforcement they have out there, but in the town I'm from after about 10 pm there's no one on duty and you'd have to wait for a county sheriff to show up

how long does it take to get a call out and police cars to respond? the 911 call lasted over a half hour. what a terrible situation to be caught up in.
  • MadeaBecBec
God Bless you, Donna Jackson, I could hear the heartbreak in your voice for doing what you had to do. I am also kind of glad it was your house and not your elderly neighbors, that Riley broke in to, they might have gotten scared to death, it was a good thing that you know how you to defend yourself and property.
  • My great-grandmother was like Donna Jackson before she passed. She never killed anyone, but please believe she let more than a few fly from time to time. Maybe she could have escaped, but maybe she's not the type of person who can calculate other options when truly afraid. I know my great-grandmother surely could not. Her first instinct was to defend herself, and she couldn't process anything else. And you never really know what you'll do when placed in that situation. We know what we SAY we would do, but that doesn't mean we'd actually do. I'm very sorry that this happened to her, but I can definitely understand her actions. I know she's probably having a tough time with this.

What a tragedy. Now because of this fool's bad decision, this poor woman has to live with killing him for the rest of her life. I actually feel kinda sorry for the man too, since apparently he didn't have bad intentions (if I understand correctly) and was seeking help for an accident he caused, which probably makes Donna Jackson feel that much worse. What a nightmare.

Drugs, alcohol, and cars do NOT mix and this is a prime example of poor decision making leading to disaster.

The woman seems truly devastated by shooting him, which begs the question, was there NO other option? I don't know the layout of the house or property, but would it not have been feasible for her to run out the front door while he was around back, banging on the door? Maybe not, but I'd rather do that than shoot an unarmed drunk. Again, not criticizing her at all, just wondering.
  • Uvgottabkiddin
OMG poor woman, she did all she could not to shoot him.
  • McDanel
I wish I could hug her 'til the tears went away.

I have SO much respect for this woman. She handled herself So well. Bless her, she only did what she had too!!!
