Little Girl Killed By Toy Box

CHANDLER, Arizona – A 3-year-old girl has died after the lid to her toy box fell closed, hitting her in the head. Officials say the girl was reaching inside the toy box for a toy when the lid closed hitting her head “‘on the wrong spot” and sending her into cardiac arrest. Paramedics arrived on the scene and tried to resuscitate the girl, but were not able to. “I’ve been a paramedic for almost 30 years and I’ve seen this event just three times with a toy box. I can’t stress enough that this is just a tragic, tragic accident,” said Chandler Fire Battalion Chief Paul Nies. You know, I am aware that the top of the skull on young kid’s are not fully…cooked…or whatever. But I’ve honestly never thought of this kind of thing happening. Imagine looking after your kid making sure they are not put in harm’s way unnecessarily, keeping them safe and sound. Only to have them die like this.

I wish there were a standardized, easy, simple, basic book given in one syllable words to all new parents at all hospitals. It would even have pictures--just because someone can't read doesn't mean they don't want to be careful parents. Ideally, such a book would mention toyboxes. It seems that children being hurt/killed by sticking things in electrical outlets is quite common as well. Scary. You would think everyone would know. Apparently not...

I am sure many people would object to a federally standardized book--"aaahhh nooooo socialism baaaad." Not me. The children are literally the future. I'd be happy for tax dollars to go to such a thing. Heck, I'd even go for tax dollars subsidizing electrical outlet covers.

I hear you, Twitz! I know what you are saying. And you're right. And I wasn't really meaning to call you out for being judgmental--I am myself judgmental. What are we all here on the DD for but to judge other people, after all? A story like this, though, just makes me sad. It's terrifying how things can go so wrong in an instant. And children's toyboxes are so classic. I am sure in hindsight the parents are really smacking themselves in the head--the cooked part of the adult head...

i retract that 'but no im not judgemental' statement above...i re-read all posts and yes it does sound as tho im bein judgemental, but i didnt mean to b...i appologize for that...i just dont understand why that happened...i mean u spend 9 months caryin that lil bein inside u and when he or she is born i do everything in ur power to protect them...yes there r risks in everyday life that cant b avoided...but what i am only tryin to express is that r things that u can do to try to avoid danger
  • twiztids_angel
i agree its sad...but no im not judgemental...there r things u have to let ur kids do like ride a bike etc....what im tryin to say is there r avoidable things...like the toybox lid...same thing with electrical outlets etc....there so much u CAN control around u....im not here tryin to piss any1 off...im just tryin to have my opinion

But, yeah, just picturing a child's head, with a not fully cooked skull, in an eggcup. Like I said, maybe I'm just twisted.
  • sugarglider

    How so?

Morbid--you didn't mean to be funny?! Maybe I'm just twisted, but it definitely gave me the image of a soft-boiled egg!

I think the image of cooked brains is just funny/gross to begin with, although I'm aware that some people do in fact like to eat brains. It's a country thing, apparently, and allegedly cooked brains are creamy--gross!

PS im not a so-called ‘bubble parent’ but things that ARE avoidable YES im goin to avoid them

LOL - but you are a bit judgmental :)

Chronic is right--you can't guard against every single thing. And I'm sure you didn't do so with your kids, either, Twitz. Did you remove the lid to your TOILET? (And, if so, how'd you ensure that your kids didn't fall in the lidless toilet and drown?). How about riding a bike around the neighborhood? Didn't you know your kid could get hit by a car? Point is, there are so many truly ignorant/negligent parents in the world, I can't see condemning anyone for this. It's really awfully sad.

I challenge you to find a parenting book that specifically says no toy boxes with lids..especially with kids that are toddler age.

well...since i dont remember the names of the books i read (gotta remeber this was 94 when i was pregnant with my son) BUT i did google 'child proofing your home" and heres just ONE link of many that came under the subheading "kids room"

    http://www.homefurnish.com/kidsroom/kidsfurnitu...

says point blank if u dont think the toybox is safe REMOVE THE LID

thank u...i enjoy a good challenge
  • Killer Toy boxes suck! I use plastic bins because toy boxes with lids encourage my little monkey to climb on them and get into trouble...

I am so sorry for this family. What a terrible loss.
  • This is not more than half a mile up the road from where I live!

this is so sad an TOTALLY avoidable….did this mom not read childcare/safety books?? i mean damn i was a 17 yr old mom and knew better than to have toyboxes with any kinds of lids at all!!….even the soft plastic lids can cause entrapment and/or suffocation in a small child…i mean DAMN!!

Technically anything can kill your children and is avoidable with after thought .. 20/20 eh. Your child could drown with a glass of milk if swallowed the wrong way, and we all know children suck at the breath after you drink not while you drink part, are you going to quit giving them milk because there's a slight chance something could happen? Bubble parents sadden me.

This is tragic and all that, of course, but what stood out to me about this story was that the paramedic had seen it 'only three times'. That's a lot more than I would have expected, honestly.

Must have been one of those older wood toy boxes. My son's was plastic and even so the lid stayed up until it was forced to close. Poor family!
  • twiztids_angel
and to imperial cereal killer....i dont know about the newer toyboxes havin these kinda latches...my kids were very young in the mid90's....my youngest was born in 2000...we didnt have those kind back then...we were urged to remove ALL lids on toyboxes

    How so?

Because my toy box and microwave are confusing. If they committed a crime and I had to identify them in a line up, one of them would get away with murder.

    What a shame.
The toyboxes I have here all have some kind of gizmo hinge- when you open the lid, it stays open. To close the lid, you have to push and keep pushing until it's closed. I guess the one in the story must be an older toybox, because I could be wrong, but I thought those new hinges were standard for toyboxes now.

That is so sad. Deaths like that are so senseless, it just makes you realize how vulnerable we are. I knew a girl whose aunt died after tripping over her vacuum cleaner cord and hitting her head on the coffee table. Could you fucking imagine? Ugh.

Jesus christ, can you do something about these ads????
  • Oh my goodness, how tragic.
  • Regrettable choice of words, somehow.
