I now lots of men who would list that as a way they chose to die, how horrible for that family, Could happen to any nursing mother I suppose, how sad!

    Absolutely heart breaking :(

So very tragic. One reason I was so paranoid to sleep with baby as I breastfed....thes things can and do happen. I can only imagine the utter horror this mother must have felt once she realized her baby was dead and not sleeping. A very sad day for mother, child and family. My deepest sorrow over their loss.

Shelley -- That is too funny! Yes, some men would volunteer for this death. I really wonder how a woman could not feel the baby squirming for air. But perhaps it was a very young baby without much strength.

Yeah...airplane seats are not what anyone would think of as roomy. Especially coach.

I imagine she was extremely exhausted from having a newborn and the sheer stress of the flight. I hope she can forgive herself for what was obviously a sad and tragic accident.

How tragic. Poor mother must be devestated.

    I don't see it.
Both my kids were on the tit for way too long. Like till they could ask for it.
In the beginning like that a mom is totally aware of the baby feeding and smothering and all that happy shit.
Meh what do I know, I am a guy. Even at 4 weeks the baby would have struggled imo,

Infants do smother easily. They don't have the neck muscles to lift their heads, so the amount of struggling could be quite minimal.

    Yuck--that sounded awfully clinical.

Yup, this is what I was going to say. If the baby is very warm, this can also put them into such a deep sleep that they are unable to rouse themselves. The combination of the baby being too warm and just in the wrong position...sigh.

What a horrible, horrible tragedy for this family. The mother must be beside herself with guilt...I hope she can eventually realize that it was an accident. :( I co-sleep and breastfeed, and I can't even imagine how I'd feel if something like this were to happen.
