I'm confused. It sounds like the friend set up a date for consensual sex, not a rape. It turned into rape when the victim changed her mind. How is the other girl responsible for that?

It's hard to word that without it sounding like I'm blaming the victim, which I'm not. I just don't see why the other girl bears responsibility for the rape. Was she in a position to stop it, when the victim couldn't?

You're right, Deety - if it was set up as consentual, the other girl would bear no responsibility. I should have read more closely, as I missed the part that said "the victim" told investigators that it started consentually.

Added to that, in our legal world 14 YOs can be tried as adults for murder but rarely do they have to accept any responsibility for sexual crimes b/c they aren't old enough to consent.

What gets me is why she had to sit at school for hours in bloody clothes before the school officials called police. Did they not notice? I would think being injured enough to require surgery and intensive care would be kind of obvious something horrible happened. It would take quite a bit of time to stop bleeding from there..that's not a slap a band aid on it and it's all better kind of wound.

Presumably, this relates to my use of the term "whore". I expressed no double standard. The fact that I excluded the young men involved in my use of the term does not mean that I view them in a less derogatory manner.

Since it's come up, I generally use the term "whore" to describe individuals who are engaging in sexual activity for any reason OTHER than sexual desire. This is where the perceived double standard tends to come into play, as females are more likely to have sex for a reason other than sexual gratification than men are. Am I making an assumption thinking that a 14 year old girl about to allow 3 young men to ride a train on her is probably doing so for some reason other than sexual gratification? Well, yeah, but I think "educated guess" is more accurate.

So, if you're making a blanket statement about girls and boys and sex and legitimate "normal desires", I'm right there with you. Promiscuity should be viewed objectively, without gender playing a role and while taking motivation into consideration. But, if you were trying to assert that these girls were displaying "normal desires" and that my use of the word "whore" was uncalled for, I'm going to respectfully disagree on both counts.

Deety & Athena--I'm assuming that the reason the friend would be charged is that it's not just a matter of garden variety rape but also statutory rape, which would be an issue here even if garden variety rape hadn't occurred (which it obviously did). If she abetted statutory rape (one of these dudes is 20), then the matter of consent isn't an issue either way.

By the way...garden variety rape...brings up visions of violent assault via zucchini.
