Man Stabbed To Death Over Seat In Subway

New York – At around 2 a.m. Saturday, some New York subway riders witnessed a horrific attack that started when a disorientated Gerardo Sanchez asked Dwight Johnson to move his duffel bag so he could sit down.  When Johnson politely pointed out the other empty seats on the train, Sanchez pulled out a steak knife and began stabbing him in the face and neck. A witness stated Johnson was screaming, “‘I’m dying, I’m dying,’ and there was blood coming out of his mouth and spraying out his neck.” The entire time, Sanchez was following him around telling him he should have just let him sit down. Johnson died quickly from a severed carotid artery, found still sitting dead in his seat with his eyes open. Sanchez was arrested and charged with murder. Friends and family say Sanchez has not been the same person since suffering a head injury from a 2-story fall two weeks ago.

    @Chronic:

    I remember hearing about that story a long time ago while I was out having beers in Brooklyn. This story is quite a bit different. The perp had a steak knife, for fuck's sake. I am almost got jumped by a gang of drunk "gangsta" teenagers on the L train at around 3am, and everyone in the car surrounded the kids. People in NYC tend to look out for one another. The most retarded thing that happened here was the guy stopping the fucking train and trapping everyone in between stations with a maniac.

    Hmmmm… maybe I should rethink my trip to Newyork.

    This sort of thing happens very rarely. I've lived here for a while, and this is the first subway murder I've been aware of.

    Check out this article in the Times...a student got pictures of this shit as it went down:

  • some people suffer head trauma and discover they can speak french, or play the piano. this guy, not so much.

    Ermm, why did Sanchez have a steak knife on a Subway? Do they serve food there, during commutes?

    What I find more disturbing is the fact that a crowded train car did practically nothing. Good job, New York.
  • You get a little bit of info from different sites, but it looks like Sanchez stabbed him twice. Once in the neck, and once in the hands. But that carotid artery is a bitch, especially when severed.

    Well, I sure am glad there was a witness there to tell us all about how this poor guy was screaming that he was dying while this asshole kept stabbing him him in the face and neck. Public Service Announcement: If you happen to see someone stabbing another person in the face, at least attempt to kick them in the balls or punch them in the neck. It's the least you can do man. Next time, that shit could happen to you.

    Just an FYI Sanchez family. If a loved one falls a couple of stories, and they just don't seem to be themselves after that for some strange reason, take them to the hospital. Call an ambulance if you notice them acting strangely after taking them to the hospital and then they're released. You aren't in the third world anymore.

    Wow. That is horrific. Stories where the victim is aware of their dying always make my stomach clench--one of those weird things that can get to me though I can probably take other things without a blink and make others wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

    I do usually spend a moment giving contemplation to IF the story/excuse is true, and if it is in this case, I also feel some pity for the murderer (SOME, not a lot, mind you). I've seen some TV shows that feature the personality differences after head injuries and they're really scary to think about. Like insanity, if it's real/true, it's a terrible concept and one of the few things that I find reasonable to consider in sentencing. However, I've seen this excuse used like insanity also--even if there IS a report on a fall for this guy, it doesn't mean that he is not responsible. Just as even a person with a past history of psych hospitalizations doesn't immediately give verification to an insanity defense.

    Personally without any other information, I feel this guy was messed up somehow, with the way he followed the guy saying he should have let him sit down. That makes me think that there's something messing with his insight and judgment. Looking forward to hearing the updates to this.

    I just love the excuse. I bet there is no police report or ambulance call for this so called fall. I just love it. Not the same since he fell. Nice one.
