“Get Off The Phone, Stupid!”

Keizer, OR – On November 9th, a woman called Keizer police to report that she had been shot at by an older man driving a Jeep Cherokee. The woman stated that she was driving down the road with her baby on board, talking on her cell phone, when the man in the Jeep sped up next to her and started screaming. In a matter of seconds, the crotchety old coot had whipped out a gun. The woman thought for sure she was gonna die when he pulled that trigger – but, instead of a bullet whizzing through the window and into her skull, a BB harmlessly pinged the window and bounced off. Fast forward to NovemberNovember reviewsNovember reviews 16 – Keizer police received a similar call about a man threatening a woman on a cell phone. This time, though, before whippin’ out his BB gun, he whipped out a sign that said, “Get off the phone, stupid!” (Raise your hand if you’ve been tempted to do the same damn thing). According to the second female caller, the man waved his finger at her then reached for his gun, waving it at her as she continued talking on the phone. Unlike the first woman, she got dude’s license plate number.

Police were able to track the license plate to 61-year-old Carl Wynkoops. A search of Wynkoops’ vehicle revealed a black ski mask, a BB gun, and the paper sign. His wife has an explanation for the ski mask: “He’s a survivalist,” she said. In Wynkoops’ apartment, police found an old grenade and what was thought to be a pipe bomb. Though Wynkoops’ wife said the pipe bomb was merely a home-made firecracker, the bomb squad was called out to detonate it. Carl Wynkoops was arrested and is being held on two counts of reckless endangering, menacing, and unlawful use of a weapon. He isn’t being charged for being in possession of a pipe bomb.

The victims aren’t the only ones relieved to hear of Wynkoops’ arrest. Neighbor Michael Kelly had this to say about the old fart: “His response to something like people not picking up dog poo and then rubbing it on their door – I think he has people problems – not cell phone problems.” Heh.

I’m with you backlash, if it was a real gun he’d be a real hero
Nothing more dangerous than a driving cell phone bitch, and she didn’t even get off the phone when he shot at the car, seems she was to busy talking to notice

LOL--because it sure isn't dangerous to be speeding around and screaming and and holding up signs and pointing things out the window instead of paying attention to the road. Note, this psycho was actually driving. And even if he hadn't, he could have caused a serious accident. Pretty moronic to try to solve a problem by making it worse. No? Yes.

Still, it doesn’t sound like these ladies nearly ran over anyone or were even causing much of a problem. It sounds like he was driving around looking for someone talking on a cell phone. The guy sounds like a dick. He wasn’t concerned about safety at all because if he was, he wouldn’t have made the roads more dangerous by diverting attention to his sign or taking shots at people. He could have caused those people to wreck! And how safe was his driving? It’s a lot harder to control a vehicle while shooting a gun than it is while holding a cell phone!

I'm with you. I would be willing to bet that driving around in an apoplectic rage looking for someone to shoot with a BB gun is at LEAST as distracting as talking on a cell phone. I find myself wanting to kill at least one cell phone driver a day, but this guy is a serious asshole. I think his neighbor probably hit the nail on the head.

I hate cellphone drivers, too. It's funny how some people will fear a roller coaster and not fear driving a 65 mph talking on a cell phone while putting on makeup while drinking coffee. "Did you say three?" "No, I said TREE!"

    HAH! My sentiments EXACTLY

Dayummmmm somebody needs anger management! Jerk.
  • Fuck it. I love the guy.

    Birds of a feather?

I see myself writing a story about your road rage sometime in the future. I hope you make it at least this interesting. ;)

    me! me! *raises hand.
You have no idea how much I've thought about having a large sign with me that says "Get off the phone you idiot" but have never done it because...well... most people are crazy and you never know how they might react. Yet everygodammnedmorning on my way to work there's some asshole driving slow and hitting the brakes for no damned reason and as soon as I pass him up, and look over (to see if maybe they're having a heart attack or something cuz thats how bad they're driving) it's ALWAYS some asshole on the phone talking or even worst texting.

Yay for grouchy old guys with sign (minus the gun)!!

Love it!...OMG I got the giggles thinking about that women just before the BBs popped her window. Good for crotchety old man!

If he had used a .45 instead, I would already have a poster of him on my wall...

Wow. Yep, he definitely needs anger management! It can be annoying and even unsafe when people are talking on the phone while driving. I've nearly been run over by people who didn't notice a red light and the "walk" sign clicking on because they were talking on a cell phone. When that happens, I am tempted to pick up a rock and chuck it at their car while screaming obscenities. Never did it, though, because that would be an inappropriate response, the only harm having been done was that my adrenaline shot up instantaneously. Although after jumping out of the way, I have stood by, shaken my fist and screamed "WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING, IDIOT!"

Drivers talking on their cell phone suck ass, it's true. But whipping out a gun? Sure, it's a BB gun, but obviously those women couldn't realize that. If I saw him waving that thing at me, I probably would have driven off the road or hit the breaks or done something really dangerous in my panic. The guy deserves to be locked up.

Field Marshall Wynkoop is a nincompoop.

I'm laughing, too, about how possession of a ski mask makes one a "survivalist." These folks should change their names to Wincompoop!
  • sugarglider
Me, I HAVE been known to leave notes on people's cars to let them know what I think of their driving, their parking, or sometimes just their bumper stickers. But, that's pretty harmless...keeps me from succumbing to the Wincompoop urges, strong though those urges may be...

Not compared to a cell phone addicted bitch, they see nothing, hear nothing and cause accidents
At least he was paying attention and spotted her, she didn't even know he was screaming at her and shooting at her. Cell phone bitches are road rage carriers, they create rode rage in others and there is of yet no cure

Demonstrably, alas, he was not paying attention to his driving. And he didn't just spot her--he clearly went out looking for people to harass. As to the second person who "didn't even know he was screaming at her and shooting at her," that is also demonstrably untrue. Hence, she got his license plate number--probably telling the person on the other end, "this dude is shooting at me! holy shit! here's his plate number!" If she hadn't realized he was shooting at her, she wouldn't have gotten his plate number...

Loads of bad drivers in the world, whether on cell phones or not, but vigilante wacko-ness isn't going to help. This guy, much as one may be able to relate, needs a hobby to put some of his energy into. Something more productive and helpful to society than this, one might hope.

I know this gentleman personally, even more so his wife. These events were EXTREMELY out of character for him. His wife is torn to shreds. Not one person who knows him will say he was in the right, but this is someone who up until these events has been an enormously caring man who would give the shirt off his back. I would hate to see any of his friends or family see this critism, regardless of whether it is pro or con. Carl was almost lost to Cancer not long ago and he is still recovering. With that pending tradgedy and these incidents his friends and family have had to deal with enough.

My heart goes out to him and his family.

Jeeze..its a great world. So many people losing it, and with good reason too.

Instead of arresting him, they should give him the key to the city.
