Hunter Shoots Student To Death, Mistaking Her For A Deer

FERRUM, Virginia – 23-year-old Jessica Goode was out in the woods collecting frogs for a science project with two other Ferrum College students when 100 yards away 31-year-old hunter, Jason Cloutier, took aim with his high-powered rifle and fired — mistaking Goode for a deer. The bullet struck Goode in the chest, passed through her and through the hand of 20-year-old Regis J. Boudinot. Goode turned to Boudinot and stated “I’m going to die” and then collapsed. Cloutier immediately tried to help Goode, but it was too late. Although this is a tragic accident, Cloutier was not supposed to be hunting on the property. He now faces charges of manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing. He is currently out on bail. A Remembering Jess Goode Facebook page has been created if you want to stop by. I would advise anyone not wearing a bright orange vest with blinking Christmas lights, and a loud speaker exclaiming “I am NOT a deer!” to stay out of the Virginia woods during hunting season.  Continue on for some videos.

Some people are just rebellious and will never follow the rules. How sad for this young lady. RIP!
  • Once again, a case where I hope they throw the book at the perp...even if it was technically just a stupid accident. He did not have permission to hunt the property and was trespassing. If he had been doing things right, chances are this girl would not be dead.

You know, they say that if you kill someone while in the process of committing a crime you are responsible for that person's death. I believe that should more equally applied and should include, always, cases like this one. As an aside, I also believe it should include cases where the person accidentally kills themselves while in perpetuation of a crime. That way the families of jackasses who, just as one example; fry themselves while trying to steal copper wire can't sue the owners of the property for their moron family member's death.

However...I once knew a couple of guys who were driving down a country road and spotted a deer in the woods. It was not deer season, but they decided to go after it anyway. One went off into the woods, the other heard a rustling and fired...shooting his pal in the head and killing him. No charges were ever brought against the shooter, even though it only happened because they were poaching...which is illegal.

This was not an accident, you don't shoot what you can't see.
Many hunting deaths happen because of idiots like this guy, that shoot at movement in brush, without knowing what they are shooting at. Shooting accidents do happen, but this guy shot at something moving and didn't know it was a person, that's not an accident.
    Stupid is not an excuse.
  • True, biteme. I should've written "unintentional" instead of "just a stupid accident". God...I can't slip anything past you fuckers, can I? ;)

I don't beleive he meant to shoot her. It truly is a tragic accident. I think the charges are fair and this is something he will have to live with the rest of his life. I feel for the family, stuff like this right before the holidays has got to be tough.
  • This is tragic. I do think there needs to be tougher penalties for people who disregard rules in regards to hunting and fishing, though.

I currently live in an area that's big on hunting and fishing, (I miss civilization. Can someone please kidnap me and take me back? Thanks.) and we have many people doing these same things--hunting without license, hunting on property that they're not allowed to be hunting on, hunting with illegal firearms, hunting certain animals when they're not in season, etc.

I was in court a few months back where a man was charged with hunting illegally on someone's property. They might as well just pooh-pooh'd him out of the court. He had to pay some kind of kiddie fine. Yes, this man will have to live with this on his hands for the rest of his life, but I think if laws were tougher on this sort of thing maybe this tragedy wouldn't have happened.

He meant to shoot a dear, but didn't bother waiting to see if it was a deer in the brush or not. What he did is illegal and should not be considered an accident. He aimed at the object and pulled the trigger with the intent to kill the abject in the bush. No deferent than being dumb ass drunk driving and running someone over, I don't consider that an accident either.

I agree biteme. It was not an accident. Stupid fucker!

Why shoot into a bush not knowing what is in there??? Damn every morning I have the worse time trying to drive to work and not hit a deer. They are everywhere on the road, on the side of the road, and in my yard. Its not like there is a deer shortage. Every hunter safety class-teaches do not shoot until you know its a deer. This is criminal.
