Teacher Ties Up Loud Students At Elementary School

HICKORY, North Carolina - When four kids became too loud in their third-grade classroom at Southwest Elementary, their substitute teacher employed a rather asinine form of punishment. She made the kids stand up in class then tied them together with a jump rope. Using the rope as a leash, she led the crying kids down a ramp into a playground where she left them for half an hour. She told them she wanted them to know what jail felt like. Obviously, parents are pissed. The Hickory City School District said the substitute, who has been in the school system since 2004, acted in an inappropriate manner and no longer works in the schools there. I do not agree with what the teacher did, but man that punishment is WEAK when compared to the shit they would do to you in the ’70s. I’d take a trip to the playground over the Board of Education any day of the week.

Here is the letter sent to parents:

November 17, 2009
Dear Parents,
In order to keep you informed about our school, I feel it is important to address a situation that recently occurred.
Last Friday, I was informed that a substitute at our school inappropriately managed students during class time. I investigated this incident by obtaining statements from students and teachers who witnessed the situation, and I also reported this information to Dr. Cox, our Superintendent. No students were physically harmed; however, this person will no longer substitute in Hickory Public Schools. The safety of our students is my primary concern, and it is my expectation that the adults who work in our school treat our students appropriately.
If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Sherry R. Willis, Principal

OMG! When I was in 3rd grade our teacher duct taped a kid to his chair. Then taped his mouth shut. It was the funniest shit ever. We laughed and laughed. The kid couldn't stop laughing. He was always stealing and beating other kids up. Where is he now? Well he grew up, broke into a family members home to kick the shit out of him, and my granny shot him in the groin. True story. He's in jail.

Why didn't the teacher just send them to the office? I am wondering what kind of emotion damage this could have done? To be paraded in front of your peers in that fashion, especially in grade school would/could be very traumatic for some children. Whatever happened to after school detentions or losing their recess for the day?

A teacher who resorts to hitting students or doing what this teacher did, are shitty teachers.

You as well as I remember the paddle. It was definitely a deterrent back then, especially when you walked by the office and heard the strikes going off. I had a paddle once, and it hurt like hell (Stinging). Now I know most of you out there want me paddled again, but that's just too bad, and your problem.

It seems once this (paddle/enforcement) went away, the schools are more dangerous then ever before. I don't know all the facts about this case, but come on! A rope around a couple of kids, and having them stand for a period of time, which sounds like standing in a corner, is just too harsh?

Me, I would have sent them to the principal’s office, like when we were younger. That always sucked, but it would be better than what she did, even though I don’t think what she did was all that bad.
  • This sub was out of line, from the story above I’m guessing this happened during recess, she could have easily cancelled recess and blamed it on the kids that were acting up.

They were talking in Writing class, and tied up in Writing class. Recess followed and that is when they were lead out to the playground tied together and left alone. One student got out of the ropes, but the teacher caught him and put him back in. After recess they were freed and one of the students went straight to the principal.

This sub was out of line, from the story above I'm guessing this happened during recess, she could have easily cancelled recess and blamed it on the kids that were acting up. The anger from all the other kids having to miss recess would have been punishment enough, but no she had to get all psycho on them and lose her job...what a maroon.

I remember getting sent outside in the horrible heat and humidity and having to walk to the fence and back 100 times or having to run a bunch of laps for acting up in class. Then when I got home my ass got tore up or I was grounded. It was never worth it. I don't know why she sub didn't just send the kids to the office and let the administrators handle the discipline.

I'm glad the school actually did something about this. My 4-year-old daughter was assualted by her Pre-K teacher several years ago and our school refused to do anything about it, even though another older elementary student and a high school student witnessed the incident. I complained to the principal, superindendant, and the school board with zero action taken. My daughter was hysterical every morning when it was time to go to school, and I had to end up pulling her out. She was behind the other students when she went to kindergarten the next year of course, and had to repeat it. She absolutly HATES school even to this day.

I feel bad for subs, when we were kids we terrorized them, having said that, she tied them up and paraded them through the school and then left them tied up.....lost it much?

When I was in school the parents and teachers worked together. You were not allowed to run amok and you respected your teachers. You knew if you were bad you would get a paddling. Kids now days are not taught to respect anything and they know that all they have to do is just hint that they were smacked and everybody goes to hell. That said, this teacher is an idiot and should never teach again. If she can't handle her class she shouldn't be there, sub or not.
  • spare the rod, spoil the child.

A teacher who resorts to hitting students or doing what this teacher did, are shitty teachers. But then again, you get what you pay for.

I don't see anything wrong with what the teacher did. What's the problem with this? So she put a rope around them, better that than a paddle. This is whats wrong with kids today, spare the rod, spoil the child.
  • backlash
she wanted them to know what jail felt like

So she made them do meth then shoved something in their ass?
