Detroit, MichiganA 21-year-old woman had a delinquent bill with a local Rent-A-Center. So a bill collector was sent to her house to discuss her delinquent account. I wasn’t even aware that RentRent reviewsRent reviews-A-Center did that. Anyway, 43-year-old George Herron arrived and sometime during their conversation things turned sexual in nature. Herron told the woman that he could make her Rent-A-Center bill disappear if she performed a sex act on him. He then pulled out his dick and placed her hand on it. When she removed her hand, he decided he didn’t need her anyway, finished masturbating and then left. The woman called police after he called her back and suggested another meeting. Herron was charged with two accounts of criminal sexual conduct in the forth degree and one account of  aggravated indecent exposure.

God knows I have had some lame ways of meeting women over the years. I mean who could forget my disastrous “hit the hot blond in the crosswalk with my car” idea…but damn, George. This was really, really pathetic. Anyone else here ever dealt with Rent-A-Center or their ilk? I wont laugh at you if you have ever used them, I am just curious if it was standard practice for them to send someone to your house to handle debt collections. That just seems pretty shady.

Rent-A-Center’s debt collection tactics are under investigation here in Washington and have already resulted in a large judgment against the company in CA. While I’ve never done business with them myself, it sounds like sending a debt collection agent to the house is common practice. This certainly isn’t the first time one of their agents have been involved with the police, although this is the first time I’ve heard of one attempting to extort sexual favors.

I can’t help but think the situation wouldn’t have progressed to that point if the woman wasn’t at least considering the offer.

Many, many years ago I was temporarily living away from home and rather than buy an all new TV I went to a rent-a-center and rented one for a month. I paid up-front for the whole month so I never had to deal with the collectors. At the end of the month, they came and got the TV and that was that. They didn’t ask for any handjobs, and I didn’t offer. It never really came up. HA! See what I did there?

Okay, ANYWAY…when you posted the teaser for this story on twitter, I came here expecting a story about a woman who offered a handjob to the collector in order to get out of paying, only to be rebuffed. INSTEAD, I got an even BETTER story about a sexual advance gone awry…fantastic. You have brightened my day.

Highly likely that this guy is a sexual predator in the early phases. Such bold, forceful behavior concerning his genitals and a willingness (even desire) to masturbate in front of an unwilling witness is textbook sexual predator behavior. I know it sounds tame compared to rape and torture, but think about how difficult it would be for you to maintain an erection in front of an unwilling stranger, much less masturbate to climax successfully? Most men are incapable of it. This guy was aroused by the idea, coupled with the seemingly insignificant amount of power he had over her.

Furthermore, this guy called the victim and asked to come back AGAIN. Sexual predators sometimes imagine their victims are willing participants, or convince themselves that they enjoyed the experience. In his mind, what he did to this woman wasn’t rape, but rather a first date. Calling to see her again was as normal for him as calling a woman the next morning.

I would not be surprised at all to find out he had other victims, but they were too ashamed to come forward. THIS woman didn’t even come forward until he called her a second time. They need to get this guy off the streets before his behavior escalates.

This has absolutely nothing to do with this story, really, but who here is old enough to remember when places like Rent-A-Center and U-Can-Rent were the only places you could rent movies? In some places, before the Mom & Pop video stores, rental places like that was where you had to go. Good times.

    Whoa. Really? Bizarre.

I do remember the days before there were franchise movie rental stores in my area. My dad would take me to Elmers (which also sold washers and driers, if I recall correctly), and let me wander around the horror section while he looked for his movies.

This movie’s cover is permanently burned into my memory, I was so drawn to it at the ripe ol’ age of 3. Oddly, I’ve never seen it, though.

So she was fine with it the first time but drew the line at date #2?

Jesus Christ, Athena. Drop all movie watching you had planned and watch Fright Night immediately. If you were near me right now I would bop you in the head. It’s one of my all time favorite horror films. Watch that shit.

That’s so funny! I haven’t consciously thought of this film in, god… 20 years? But you talking about Rent-a-Centers renting movies triggered my memories of the weird applicance store/movie rental place which is permanently tied to that movie cover.

Strange how the subconscious works. I’ll watch it tonight if Blockbuster has it. :P

Only on D’D would a story of a man masturbating lead to someone finally watching Fright Night.

I can’t help but think the situation wouldn’t have progressed to that point if the woman wasn’t at least considering the offer.

Maybe she was just trying to control the situation, home alone with an aggressive man that she had felt compelled to let in.

So she was fine with it the first time but drew the line at date #2?

And given how the system treats woman that are victims of sex crimes, I don’t blame her a bit.

    Spot on!

I have never dealt with Rent-a-Center first hand. However, my sister had rented furniture from there and when she didn’t make the payments they came to her house and took the shit back, and trust me it was in way worse shape by then. And this was after they had sent someone out previously to try and get a payment from her and she pretended she wasn’t home. But apparently she was free and clear of having to pay them anything else after that.

As an assertive female, I don’t consider allowing a stranger to place your hand on his penis to be controlling the situation. But, perhaps you’re right. Maybe she thought that was the path of least resistance.

This is clearly the woman’s fault. Maybe next time she’ll pay her bill on time.

I have never rented from Rent-A-Center but I have a friend who does and I considered it once, but after seeing the prices they charge and the interest rates…I couldnt get out of the store fast enough.
Once when I was about 5, maybe 6, a couple of guys from Rent-A-Center came one afternoon and wanted to talk to my mom. I let her know they were at the door but she would not get out of bed. They were there to repo the washer and dryer and the lazy bitch left it up to her 5 year old daughter to take care of her problems. I remember it like it was yesterday. Later she got mad at me for letting them inside. Like really, what was I supposed to do? I was a child!

I also went looking in a Rent-A-Center once when I was moving and my furniture was picked up a month before I was to leave. The prices were unreal. Only poor people who don’t have any or good credit use these places. I could tell from just talking to the “sales associates” that they aren’t of the highest caliber [sp] so I am not surprised there was a perv among them.

I thought they just came to pick up their stuff when you didn’t pay up. I see them in my apartment complex all the time and people pretend not to be home and don’t answer the door. They’ll go after your references too. They went to my mom’s house looking for my brother’s big screen. My mom keeps just keeps a moderately sized TV in the living room that she let them see and then they acted like they wanted to look around the whole house and my mom slammed the door on them.

I have never dealt with rent a center, but there are a couple in my neghborhood, there are frequent problems at them when hubby or wife get home and find they have had a repo take place while one or the other wasn’t home. I am surprised they have stayed in business this long

I worked in the rent to own industry for a little over ten years. I started out as a sales clerk, then collections, assistant manager, then store manager, then finally on to the corporate office. In home collections is standard procedure if someone does not pay. If they miss their payment and you can’t get them to come in and pay, you go to their house and collect the money or the merchandise. Most people think that rent to own is really expensive but you don’t actually pay any more for the merchandise than you would if you put it on a credit card and paid it off at the minimum monthly payment every month. Plus, if you rent to own it, while you are paying on it, if it breaks, they bring you a loaner unit and repair yours at no cost to you as long as you didn’t intentionally damage the unit. It’s really not a bad deal. But yes, the company DOES make a profit on it. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be in business. I too have experienced customers trying to pay their bill with sex but never an employee who did something like this.

I must admit, I worked at a Rent-A-Center for about a year one time. It was the worst job I’d ever had. Here is the scoop on how it all works. They have very good, name brand furniture and appliances that they rent to you on a weekly basis. You come into the store each week and make a payment. If you can pay the stuff off in 3 months or less, you get it for the same as cash price. This is usually one to two hundred bucks higher than retail if you’d paid cash price for it at a big retail shop.

Not too bad if you don’t have 2000.00 bucks to drop on a big screen at the moment, but you just have to have it even though you don’t need it. If you go over the 3 month period and just continue making payments, bend over, cause you’re going to get it up the poop shoot. You’ll pay at least 3 times what the merchandise is worth. If I remember correctly, it’s 3.5 times actually.

So, to get this great deal, you give them three references, then the person that rents the crap to you calls all three references and asks if you’re worth a shit. If all say yes, as they usually do, you get the crap you don’t need sent to your house and setup. Now, if you don’t pay your bill, they will call all of your references, twice a day, call your work, call anyone that they can to shame you into coming in to pay your bill.

Then, when that fails, they will drive over to your house, at least twice a day, knock on doors and windows, put the truck in reverse and put the parking break on so the beep-beep-beep of the backup warning indicator sounds all through your neighborhood and people are staring out their windows at you place until you relent and open the door to make a payment or let them get the shit out of the house, or more accurately, your trailer.

Or, if you hide like a loser, they will then go by your place of work to find out why you can’t seem to make it in to make your payment. It’s complete madness. The customers are completely insane, and the business model is completely insane. The only way that I could see where they made money was on the backs of the poor schmucks that actually paid their bill on time. I saw one idiot pay 2200.00 dollars for a slim line PS2 when they first came out. It took him a year to pay for it.

I lived in a small town at the time, and they had a weekly feature in the paper that would list local arrests over the last week. I would use this to figure out which customers I wouldn’t need to call that day, or for the rest of my life.

I had one girl on rent that stabbed her boyfriend to death with a steak knife. I had one woman who left her husband to bang a black dude, and the husband blew her face off in a McDonalds parking lot in front of their two kids when he went to pick them up from her one day. Needless to say, those were some hard retrievals.

I’ve seen whores that would rent a big screen and a bunk bed for their kids with child support money, and when you had to inevitably go get the shit, they’d pay for the big screen and have you take the kids beds and they’d be left on the couch or floor.

But, on to the subject at hand. It was not uncommon for these folks to pay certain employees of Rent-A-Center with blowjobs or ass so they could keep their shit. I never personally would partake in this activity, but I knew several that did. My guess is she’d done it in the past to this guy or his buddies, and he knew that she used her own style of currency when the going got rough. What a shitty world.
