Clark County, Wisconsin — Mary Strey, 49, started drinking earlier in the day and after visiting different bars around Neilsville, she had consumed seven or eight brandy and Cokes. But this didn’t stop her from getting behind the wheel of her car and attempt to drive home. But she didn’t make it there as police caught up with her after someone called 911 to report her. They found her parked on the side of the road and officers reported that her speech was slurred,, she stumbled, was swaying back and forth and could not perform the tests. Her blood alcohol level was 0.17. The odd thing about this story is the 911 caller who turned her in. It happened to be Mary Strey herself. After the jump, you can listen to the 911 call in which Strey called to report herself. Which is kinda classic as it includes this exchange:

Dispatch: You behind them?
Mary Strey: No, I am them.
Dispatch: You am them?
Mary Strey: Yes, I am them.
Dispatch: Okay, so you want to call and report you’re driving drunk?
Mary Strey: Yes.

Continue on to listen to the full 911 call.

While I am glad Mary had the common sense to stop and pull over, I am still wondering why she had to get police involved. But I guess that is why we have an Alcohol Related Stupidity category. Praying robbers and drunk drivers who call the cops on themselves. WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS WORLD COMING TO?!

too bad i can’t hear the rest of the call, i have no sound on my computer, haha i originally put phone (funny i’ve been drinking good story for me to read but i dont drive thank god)… i’ve heard so many stories where things have escalated much farther than this that at least everyone can be thankful that she did call herself in and no one got hurt.

    Sweet ! :D *smiles bravo

Dispacer asked if she could pull over, she asked if she could take off her seatbelt she was in park. I believe she sugessed putting on her flashers. She asked if other people call in on themselves, she states, she doesn’t want to hurt anybody, she is drunk. I think that was a very mature thing she did. I just wished she would of called family instead.

She definately deserves some type of break.

I think it was just a very drunk, very stupid thing she did. There was no need for her to call 911. She could have called a family member. A friend. A cab. A tow truck. Or just pulled over and tried to sleep it off.

    Awesome story.

She deserves to be in jail to start with just for drinking brandy and Coke.

I agree she should have called a family member. Late one Sat afternoon while college football was on TV a women and her two dogs pulled up along the side of my house. They got out of her SUV and she walked up to my front steps and sat down while her two adorable pups ran amock[sp]. When I went out of see what the hell was going on as I didn’t know her from Adam, I could tell she was very iontoxicated. I went to her truck to find whatever it was she was on and to try and find a phone number – to no avail. I finally had to call police b/c she was wanted to drive off and I wasn’t having that. Anyway, after the cops got there, they finally got info from her registration b/c she didn’t even know who she was. They called hubby and I can hear the conversation b/c the cop had the 911 dispatcher hook the call up through his radio. The cop is saying “your wife is over here drunk…etc and hubby replies ” No, that isn’t possible, my wife is upstairs asleep”. Oh no she isn’t!!! Poor man had his football games interruped and they lived clear the hell across town from me! I don’t know how she made it that far without hurting herself and others.

I love how she asks the 911 dispatcher if she can remove her seatbelt. :P

At least she did a good thing by turning herself in before someone got hurt. Maybe it was all she could think of at the moment to protect herself and anyone else. I hear alcohol impedes the exercise of common sense. Though it would have been better if she’d called a friend or relative, slept it off in her car, got a hotel for the night or got plastered in the safety of her own home. My brother gets drunk a lot, but he will never drive in that condition. I only got drunk once because I wanted to see what it was like:) I didn’t like it, so I’ve never done it again.

Still, calling the police on yourself is kind of, well, dumb. I’ve learned from past experiences that getting authority involved when you don’t have to is counterproductive. Getting the police involved with something minor should be a final resort. Of course, we don’t know if she tried to call a relative or friend and couldn’t get through. Or maybe she felt too afraid to sleep it off in her car. Maybe there wasn’t a hotel nearby or she spent all her money on the drinking. Either way, it’s a very odd situation and I applaud the 911 operator for remaining so professional. I’d never be able to hold that job for more than an hour:) I’m a nice person, but I tend to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind while engaging in spoken conversations. The first thing that came to mind here was not exactly nice, polite or compassionate.
