Dozens Watch And Film Gang-Rape Of Teen Outside Dance

Richmond, California The homecoming dance took a horrible turn for a 15-year-old girl just prior to midnight FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews evening. When police drove up to Richmond High School about an hour after the dance had ended, they observed several young men fleeing the scene. Upon investigation, they found their 15-year-old victim unconscious and suffering from “different injuries indicating she had been assaulted.” The “assault” is believed to have been a gang rape that lasted for 2 hours. And if that isn’t bad enough, police say there is a high probability of there being video of the assault shot from cell phones. Those images were captured by a group of observers who refused to intervene in any way.

At around 9:30 p.m., the girl was waiting for a ride from her father after leaving the dance. Before he got there a friend from school invited the girl to join a group of people hanging out and drinking in an alley across from the school. The teen joined in on the drinking, but passed out. That’s when the men attacked her. Her father was out looking for her as she was being raped, beaten and robbed. Police believe as many as a dozen people watched the 15-year-old girl being beaten and gang-raped by as many as six others over a two hour period, some even filming the attack on their cell phones. It wasn’t until word of the assault reached someone at the dance that someone finally called 911.

When police arrived at the scene, the attack was still taking place. They witnessed people fleeing the scene. One of those men, 19-year-old Manuel Ortega, was arrested and being held on a $800,000 dollar bond on suspicion of rape, robbery and kidnapping. The girl was found semi-conscious, half-naked and curled up by a lunch table. The victim was air-lifted to the hospital where she was listed in stable condition over the weekend.

Police also responded to Richmond High School Monday, to take into custody a freshman after he reportedly voluntarily surrendered. They have not yet named him as a suspect. The remaining arrests cannot come soon enough. I sure hope to God they catch the other motherfuckers who took part in this, as well as those who heard her screams and/or watched this poor girl get brutally raped.

"Authorities have arrested a seventh suspect in the gang rape of a teenage girl outside a high school homecoming dance in Northern California.

Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said 43-year-old John Crane Jr. walked into the police station and turned himself in without incident Tuesday evening.

French said Crane was being held on $100,000 bail on suspicion of felony sexual assault.

Investigators identified Crane last week as a suspect in the Oct. 24 sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl outside Richmond High School. Police describe him as an ex-con with a history of violent crime."

A forty-three year old??? What.The.Hell? And with a history, WTF?
    Haven't found a mug yet!!
  • LMAO. I was thinking to myself, "Well, I guess what Rogriguez is subtly trying to suggest is that Richmond should be quarantined and leveled. Controlled genocide would do the trick.
  • backlash
More than 60 people, many of them teens supporting the defendants, watched the latest court appearance…

Controlled genocide comes to mind...for the people of that neighborhood.
  • More than 60 people, many of them teens supporting the defendants, watched the latest court appearance...

    Disgusting.

Rodriguez blames the neighborhood for the fact that he neglected to call the cops. I wonder if that's his excuse for running from the cops, too.
  • Salvador Rodriguez said he found a naked girl in the bushes, and he offered her his shirt. He helped her to a bench, slick with spilled drink.

A former roommate — now a rape suspect — appeared out of the shadows of that Richmond High School courtyard on homecoming night and told Rodriguez he needed to leave. Roughly.

He says he thought to find a phone, but didn't want to leave behind the 16-year-old victim of the brutal campus gang rape that stunned the nation Oct. 24.

That's his story. The 21-year-old once arrested for the crime now wants his neighbors to know he's not a monster.

"Nope, I did not rape her," Rodriguez told KGO-TV during an exclusive interview Tuesday. "I did not beat
her. I did not rob her. I did not rape her. I was trying to help her. That's all I want people to know."

    @ Athena
Gang initiations, mugging, robbing, raping. These ideas don’t just appear in a normal child without the cultivation of an experienced mind helping them along.

You know, people are a lot more animalistic and inherently capable of evil doing than I think any of us care to accept. Toddlers don’t have to be taught to hit people and steal their playmates’ toys – they have to be taught not to. The same can be said for lots of behaviors. It’s why we have a structure of laws and social standards to keep us in check… because, in many ways, depravity is our default position, one we’re constantly endeavoring to rise above as humans.

I think it’s a safe bet, however, to say that most of these kids’ parents are not trying especially hard to mold upstanding citizens.

You are right I stand somewhat corrected; humans from when they are just little guys need to be taught what is right, what is wrong and what the difference is (not just right from wrong). I firmly believe that it takes a village to raise a child. - But even in a situation like this one there has to have been a substantial percentage of by-standers who knew in their hearts that this was wrong. I'm not to sure rape is an inherent human trait as a whole, or even majority of the population, although it's obviously inherent in a percentage. Again, I don't know. It's also probable that the kids that have those sorts of traits would flock together. It seems to me like those are the people who need to be taught not to exhibit that behavior. I have <del>little</del> no faith that this can be done with sexual predators. But to take a generally blank slate and skip forward 16 years to gang rape, I think it's safe to assume someone taught them - directly or indirectly - that this is acceptable male behavior. And what did the girls learn in their "village"? They learned in this instance that boys will be boys and girls don't get involved. Even though they involved themselves just be being there.

I am at a loss to think there are folks like this in the world. Or how anyone could even attempt to defend these bystanders.
WTF- what kind of people are these kids?
I shudder to think these folks can ever reproduce.
  • absinthe
dammit, no one has an answer to my question. guess i'll have to ask on facebook.

Appears my state is looking into "Bystander Laws".

At the end of the article, it gives an update on THIS case, though.

Some Question State's Lack Of Bystander Law
Ordinary Citizens Generally Not Required To Report Crimes

INDIANAPOLIS -- In the wake of the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside a California high school, some are questioning Indiana's lack of laws requiring bystanders to report serious crimes.

Police in Richmond, Calif., said they believe as many as a dozen people watched as the girl was beaten, robbed and gang-raped outside her high school homecoming dance for at least two hours without reporting it.

Indiana does not require the average citizen to report a rape, robbery or even if a person is killed, 6News' Joanna Massee reported.

Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis professor Henry Karlson said one of the issues with a bystander law would be prosecution.

"How are you going to prove that somebody was there and had the ability to report? Did they have a cell phone?" he said. "There's always been a strong tradition that we don't want people reporting on each other in the United States, that that is a police state."

Among other Midwest states, only Ohio has a bystander law. A federal law makes it a crime to conceal a felony, but does not punish those who witness a crime and don't report it.

In the California case, defendants Manuel Ortega, 19, Cody Ray Smith, 15, Ari Abdallah Morales, 16, and Marcelles James Peter, 17 were arraigned on Thursday on charges ranging from rape in concert and sexual penetration with a foreign object, to robbery and assault causing great bodily injury. A fifth suspect arrested, Salvador Rodriguez, 21, also remained jailed but has not been charged.

Bystanders could also be charged under the state's aiding and abetting law because they did not call 911.

That last part does warm my heart, though. Especially considering the charges... ugh!

  • this is probably a really naive question. but i don’t understand how multiple men can achieve and maintain erections in gang rape situations? is it really that arousing?

Not sure. Would any of you men who have participated in a gang-rape please weigh in?
  • E Diddy
Integration and immigration at any cost. Even if they rape, torture, and kill our youth at an escalating pace. Thanks America, you've been swell.

charles Ramsey from the school board on Cnn today-we we methodically, and carefully taking out time to put in camera's correctly (ROFL) I bet the victim will take solace in that. Can someone give me a bullshit on that...

Now the Lt. of the police dept. is trying to draw a BS circle. she went across the street in a badly lighted area so its partly her fault. Thank you cnn anchor- you are not trying to blame the victim are you? ugh no no.

Lt. Mark Gaghan go out and get the raptist. get off of CNN. Stop whinning about the victim and light bulbs. I don't think she went out on purpose to be gang raped for two hours to make your job hard.

There is now a $20,000. reward being offered for information leading to more arrests and convictions….
Oh!! And there were security cameras all around this place, but non operable!! WTH? Obviously a violent area, so why not have security cameras that actually work?
I’ll be praying for the victim! This was totally senseless!!
    Reward Source

And why did they send the 2 school cops that patrolled that area home, a school board member when questioned stated they felt everything was going along smooth and they didn't feel it was necessary to pay the overtime, they only kept the cops roaming the inside of the building on
They also mentioned this was an area where kids congregated to to drugs and alcohol
HELL! All the better reason not to have it patrolled on a night when everyone was there
    WTF!
  • tutkill
Hope they catch the bastards that raped her and they get to attend their next homecoming dance in jail.
  • mommacrazy30
Heard on the news city paid something like 100 grand for useless cameras not hooked up to anything, sounds like someone (on the school board) got a nice kickback. As of november 3rd new cameras hooked up to the police station are to be installed, they had been approved before this incident

well i guess these nasty little bastards got to have their sick fun just in time.

    Heal quickly baby girl.

I hope this poor girl was drugged and that she doesn't remember any of it. Fucking bastards....especially those that stood around and did absolutely nothing. They all ought to be sent to prison.

I too live near Richmond. I hate to label a certain place as bad, ‘cause the people are what make it what it is. These kids obviously think that their behavior is “expected” of them. Don’t snitch, take video to show your friends (and the rest of the world, for that matter), join in or you’ll be a punk, IMO these kids had to learn their behavior from example. Gang initiations, mugging, robbing, raping. These ideas don’t just appear in a normal child without the cultivation of an experienced mind helping them along. Those kids will probably go back to the strong male influences and be patted on the back, and only scolded for nearly/getting caught. May it be their parents, or the local gang leader, these kids are being steered this way. And this poor girl paid with her body, spirit, and life as she knew it. It’s a tragedy. And no one wins. Karma IS a bitch. Let it roam free on the streets of Richmond today. Heal thyself, mija, you can do it.
  • sorrow_discord
How the heck can people just watch a 15 years old child being raped and beaten.
  • biteme
Beyond all the disgust we have for what happened the perpetrators and bystanders, that school being in a high crime area, where cops roam the hulls & school grounds during the day, Why did the school choose to send the 2 school
guards that would have patrolled that area outside area home early at 9:00 to save on overtime, while the event was still going on. Crime seems to have started at 9:30 not long after they were sent home. High crime area, big event lets send some of the cops home?
OH! To save on overtime, guess the children are less important to this school district than a few bucks.
  • CassieMomma
Combine with that the fact that the average age of this group appears to be 15, a time period when “snitching” is especially condemned, and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that none of these kids did anything.

I disagree Athena. I know what you are getting at, but this isn't someone having the test key or a typical after school fight. This was a brutal attack, a rape. Something should of registered and they should of stepped in, called 911, etc.
  • backlash
    Snitches get stitches...

that means that every witness there is a complete pussy!
  • Deety
To be fair, this is Richmond, and snitches in this area do get "taken care of". The thugs around here mean business. This is near me- a lot of people move from Richmond/Oakland to my town. Lucky me.

Not that I'm excusing those who watched and did nothing. They could easily have gone to the bathroom and called 9-1-1 to anonymously report this, but they chose not to. It pisses me off to no end that those who didn't have enough integrity to try to stop this will get off scott-free. Hopefully the rapists won't as well...
  • Zibarro aka Kryssa
Athena, I'm sure you are correct about most people not being "pre-programmed" to act in another's defense - let alone 15 year old kids. Recently though, we got the chance to see FOUR of them in one morning/one incident. When that tanker blew up in Indianapolis. A mere seconds before it exploded, 4 people rushed to pull the driver from the cab, thereby saving his life! If finding ONE hero is uncommon - how rare is it to find FOUR in a few seconds time?
    I digress...sorry!

I think the part that is most disturbing about this rape is that, besides not helping - none rushed off to call 911, or at the very least, get a teacher from the dance. Instead, stupid ass cell phones were taken out (not to call 911), but to FILM a brutal rape!! Ugh. It's mortifying.
  • The reason heroes are exalted is because they are relatively uncommon. "Hero" is not the average person's default position. Combine with that the fact that the average age of this group appears to be 15, a time period when "snitching" is especially condemned, and it doesn't surprise me in the least that none of these kids did anything.

Of course, that doesn't excuse it, either. Now is when they need to learn that there are severe consequences to being silently complicit in such a violent crime.
  • Zibarro aka Kryssa
Sounds as if she was drugged as well. How much more premeditated can you get?

This is so sick and disgusting! How will that poor child trust again?

I, too hope they find the video so the perps can be identified. I have a feeling, due to her mostly unconscious state, she won't be able to identify all - if any - of them.

As for the onlookers? I hope there is Karma for you all. When you are in deep shit and need someone there - I hope they walk right the fuck by you without missing a beat. You can all fuck off and die.

Poor dad... you know he is wondering "what if I had walked/driven that way instead of this way"? Damn.
  • CassieMomma
People are just sick. Sick in the fucking head, to watch, video and plain out ignore the brutal attack of a young girl. 15 fucking years old, all you punks suck. I hope Karma comes back taking names and whoopin ass! ((Shaking Head)).....very disturbing!
  • sarabei
This makes me sick to my stomach...HOW could not one help her??
  • Lazlo
Shot video on their cell phones? WTF is wrong with people? The only good news is that there may be proof positive as to who was involved - including the budding videographers.
  • Authorities said people
took photos, laughed and some joined in as the girl was repeatedly assaulted.

A second suspect, age 15, has been arrested.
