Here is a news conference that goes into a bit of detail. I tried to embed it, but their code sucks. So click here to see the press conference. Also, I hate these things. It reminds me of SilenceSilence reviewsSilence reviews of the Lambs. Seeing the devastated parents not only getting their daughter’s face out there, but also hopefully pleading with someone who may be holding her against her will. That has got to be a nightmare.

Update – A little more info. Her purse and cell phone were found in the parking lot. The battery from the cell phone was removed. Also, she had went to use the restroom, but later called her friend in the arena and told them that she weas outside of the arena and could not get back in. Rules there state that once you walk out of the building, you do not get back in.

Update: 10-29-09

Here is the timeline outlined by Virginia State Police:

8:20 pm – 9:00 pm – Outside JPJ - State police say Harrington left John Paul Jones Arena about 8:20 that Saturday night. At 8:48 Morgan had a phone conversation with friends telling them that she couldn’t get back into the arena and that she would find her own way back home. Harrington was last seen in the JPJ area through 9:00.

9:00 pm – 9:10 pm – University Hall Area - Between 9:00 and 9:10 she was seen walking through the parking lot at University Hall.

9:10 pm – 9:20 pm – Lannigan Field Area - Between 9:10 and 9:20 she was spotted in the Lannigan Field grassy parking lot, which is also where her purse was found. She appeared to be with or near a group of people. They left without her.

9:20 pm – 9:30 pm – Copeley Road Bridge Area - The timeline ends at the Copeley Road Bridge. Harrington was last seen in that area between 9:20 and 9:30.

Interesting note. The girls she went to the concert with waited for her after the concert, but evenually left without her. They did not report that she was missing until 16 hours later. So you have a girl with her friends at a rock concert. She leaves them to go outside, even calling one of the girls to tell them she was outside, but none of the girls think anything is odd with that.

They also were not alarmed enough to contact police when they could not locate her after the concert. Personally? I think they are covering for her to some extent. Nothing bad, but maybe to protect her parents. Like maybe she went outside to meet a guy or something.

I have never understood this rule. If you pay your money you should be able to step outside for a smoke or to grab something you may have left in your car. Maybe even to make a phone call on your cell with less noise around.

I hope they find her. The battery removed from the cell phone is strange stuff, considering she used that phone to call the friend.

What I don’t understand is how the friends just left her outside when she called to tell them. If it was me, I’d have gone back outside or gone to badger security staff working the door to let her back in…

You are assuming she wanted back in at all. It has not been reported that Morgan called her friend to ask her to let her back in, but rather just letting her know where she was.

Hmm true, it was a assumption. But that assumption was also based on the fact she paid money to go to a concert, she told her friends she was going to the bathroom and ended up outside some how before the show even started.

I don’t know about everyone else but not even a hot guy could pull me away from a concert that hadn’t even started yet, especially when your friends are there. It’s not like she told them it was ok she was leaving and they’d talk later…her friends waited after the concert was over for her. Meaning the expected her to still be there for some reason. And then waited a whole lot longer before telling anyone she was missing.

Just doesn’t add up to me.

Wow they dont sound like very good friends. My friends would have been there in a second trying to find out where I’m at and I’m not very likeable. I read somewhere that her mom stated that she had posted the tickets to the concert 6 months b/4 on the refrigerator and bought 3 different outfits because she was so excited to go. I’m starting to doubt her friends even if they are covering for her I think they would fess up immediately in order to find her. Not looking good.

Just doesn’t add up to me.

Of course it doesn’t, because we are only getting the side of the story of her friends. The mother was on Headline News last night and she stated that these girls were like sisters to Morgan. they have known each other since they were little. That fact alone, and how me and my friends would cover for each other, means (imo) that the friends have yet to give up the full story as to why Morgan separated.

    1. Morgan stepped away from the group and it probably had nothing to do with going to the bathroom

    2. The girls were not immediately alarmed at Morgan not waiting for them after the concert.

To me, that means that the friends thought that Morgan was with someone for reasons they may not want to divulge. As for leaving a concert they had paid for? Depends on why she paid to go. To see the band, or meet someone there.

Of course I am doing a lot of assuming as well, as we do not know all the facts yet. But this just makes more sense to me than Morgan just walking out of the concert for no reason, calling her friends to tell her and they not come get her, then leave without finding her.

I’ll wager whom ever took out the cell phone battery did so to avoid tower pings or GPS location.
This simple act just screams out “predator” to my conspiratorial/paranoid mind, and that this missing person case will most probably not have a happy ending.

    Pretty girl.

And I am with Morbid: Those friends are covering up something. It started out being a cover-up for something the mother mustn’t know, and now it is difficult for them to admit it.

I hope they find the guts to spill before it is too late, – assuming it isn’t already……. :-(

This site has the AP reports pretty much dead on. May be worth keeping an eye on

    EVENING UPDATE – October 21, 2009:

Lieutenant Joe Rader said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon in Charlottesville that Virginia State Police do not know if Morgan Dana Harrington is still alive or has met “an ill fate”. Police investigators are treating the disappearance of Harrington as a missing person case within the parameters of a criminal investigation. However, Lt. Rader made it clear that there has been no reliable information that criminal misconduct has occurred.

Investigators planned to conclude the localized ground search of the John Paul Jones Arena and surrounding areas, including Klockner Stadium, the University of Virginia track, and Davenport Field early Wednesday evening. They believe that the ground search has been very extensive, but has not revealed any clues at this point. Lt. Rader added that
unless new information becomes available, there will be no further air
    searches of the JPJ area.

Was her ID and money still in her purse? Her cell phone with the battery removed is weird, how many 20 year olds leave a cell phone behind if they are planning to come back? Not many, unless, they have a backup, which I doubt. I know that cell phones are most important to girls this age, more so than ID or money. That has me worried for her. And, if the friends haven’t told EVERYTHING, they should spill soon, that information could save her life!! Surely, there are security cameras at the Arena, where is that footage?
I pray Morgan Dana is found, soon!!

    FBI has joined the search.

State police acting on a reported sighting of a missing Virginia Tech student shut down access to a motel in Charlottesville Saturday.

The access road to the Comfort Inn at I-64 and Route 250 was blocked about 10 a.m. as Virginia State Police followed up on a lead in the Morgan Harrington disappearance. Harrington, 20, was last seen Oct. 17 outside a Metallica concert she’d attended with friends.

State police confirmed to Fox News that they were at the hilltop motel acting on another tip but said there was “nothing to it so far.”

Police sources told CBS 19 that they were focusing on a parking lot in front of the motel after reports came in that Harrington had been spotted in the area.

Harrington vanished last Saturday night after getting separated from her friends at the concert at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

She left the John Paul Jones Arena to go to the bathroom, wound up outside somehow and wasn’t allowed back in because of the venue’s re-entry policy.

She phoned her friends about 9:30 p.m. that night to tell them she was leaving. No one has seen or heard from her since.

Meanwhile, the FBI has joined the search for Harrington.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Friday the FBI will be able to investigate tips from around the country in the disappearance of the junior from Roanoke.

Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Whitt says the task force investigating the killings of two Virginia Tech students in August checked for similarities with Harrington’s case. He says they’ve found no connection between Harrington and the couple killed in the Jefferson National Forest.

    Morbid i totally agree.

these people on facebook are driving me insane with this case.

    O
    M
    G

now they’ve found some footage of Metallica and think it’s Morgan.
keeping in mind the girl in the video:

the shirt she has on doesnt say Pantera
    she’s not wearing black tights
her hair is parted on the opposite side as Morgan wears her hair.
the boots are NOT even close to being knee high.
plus the girl in the video is watching Metallica at the AFTER show,
which totally blows the timeline & her phone call saying she cant
    get back in the venue.

but some of these poeple have found all kinds of excuses of how
this IS Morgan in the video. everyone’s all excited.

this is all happening on Morgan’s missing group on facebook.

i want to stick KFC sporks in both my eyes. its not her. ugh.

    k, rant over.

i do think she was meeting up with someone she knew/ or she met a guy at the show and slipped out the door to blaze one. then met foul play. while her friends thought she hooked up with a hotie, so they didnt call police.

I also think the police already have a suspect and are being quiet while they build their case & search for Morgan.

i’d link to facebook- but for some reason my links dont show up on here like they used to. xoxo Pam, Kelli’s mom

Was busy this weekend and missed the news that they had closed down a nearby motel because of a possible sighting of Morgan. Police sources told CBS 19 that they were focusing on a parking lot in front of the motel after reports came in that Harrington had been spotted in the area.

Metallica has added $50,000 to an existing $100,000 reward offer for information helping to find a missing Virginia woman who disappeared after one of their concerts. 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington (that’s her in the picture) has been missing since seeing the band play at a Charlottesville, VA concert on Saturday, October 17.

The band also posted a notice on its website under the heading “One Of Our Fans Is Missing.” The notice reads, in part, “Morgan has blond hair and blue eyes, is 5′6″, 120 lbs., and was wearing a black Pantera T-shirt, black skirt, and black boots… She was not carrying ID or a cell phone. Morgan was separated from her friends shortly before 9:00 pm at the venue.”

Metallica has urged anyone with information regarding the disappearance to come forward and also asked fans to check if Harrington can be seen in their photos and video footage from the concert.
