The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions

Columbus, OH – She pulled up at Burlington Coat Factory in a Hummer stretch limo on Tuesday. She claimed that she had won $1.5 million in the lottery and dammit, if you wanted a new coat or some clothes, she was buying, as long as you didn’t spend more than $500. She told customers to call their friends and family – get ‘em down here and get ‘em some free clothing – she’d be there with her money until the store closed. And come, they did. One customer said she didn’t need clothes, but needed help with rent. The newly rich philanthropist didn’t even blink as she wrote the check. The customers were piling in – there were about 500 wandering through the aisles and getting their purchases tallied, and there were about 1,000 people outside the store waiting to get in. And everyone got a two new outfits and coats and lived happily ever after – their faith in the kindness of their fellow man restored. The end. Ha! Yeah right. This is the Dreamin’ Demon, fuckers.

Linda Brown

Linda Brown

Yes, Linda Brown was offering something for nothing. “I won the lottery for half a million dollars,” she said.  “I don’t want any of it and that’s why I am here at Burlington.” She whipped out her debit card to pay for the merchandise that had been rang up at that point. The card maxed out at $5,000. No big thing. She told everyone that she was going to hit up the ATM and return with the rest of the money shortly. Customers and management alike waited in anticipation. And waited. And waited. Linda Brown didn’t come back. Oh yeah, and Linda Brown didn’t win the lottery.

The customers finally realized they had been had and they were none to thrilled. Promised free stuff, they wanted their free stuff. A riot broke out. People started tearing shit off the racks and throwing it around. People were walking out of the door with shopping carts full of stolen merchandise. The limo driver, when he realized Brown wasn’t going to be coughing up the $900 she owed him, turned her in to police.

Linda Brown, 44, was arrested on three outstanding warrants for aggravated menacing, misuse of a 911 system and causing false alarms. No charges have been filed against her for the clothing hoax pending a mental health evaluation. She could be charged with inducing panic and fraud.

Police said they have no way of tracking down the customers who stole items and fled, but they’re reviewing surveillance video.

Wow. So, the card maxed out at $5k? Like, she actually did spend $5k in all of this?

    Mental health evaluation, indeed.

The fact that the situation turned into rioting and looting really is a sad commentary about humanity. We are animals. No disputing it.

Yes, she actually spent some of her own (?) cash on this little endeavor. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out the debit card didn’t actually belong to her, though.

Some people will use any damn excuse to create havoc and destruction. It’s not like they were out anything by her not coming forth with the money.

This story says more about the people in the store than Linda Brown. I myself wouldn’t be surprised at all if it comes out that she really had suffered a mental break of some kind.
The shitheads that trashed the store? Assholes. Who fucking does that? Even if she HAD won they still weren’t entitled to a cart full of crap.
What goes on in grown peoples minds to make them act like that? Adults throwing a goddamned temper tantrum.

Too true. I cannot believe people behaved that way. It wasn’t the stores fault.
And yeah, a mental health exam is indeed needed.

We are not all animals, those that turn to rioting and looting are animals with no morals, they feel the world owes them and they’re going to take it. If given the opportunity to steal they will and do.
Those that stole are thieves in their everyday life and raise immoral children we later read about on DD
If you’re not a thief/lowlife you would not have stolen having been placed in the same situation

Manic episode? Would explain why she blew her own money. Seems so outlandish it really rings of some sort of mental illness.

    Shame on the rioters.

Yeah Biteme. When I heard this story this morning, I told my husband that the FIRST thing I would have done when that woman came in was LEAVE, lol.

Seriously, even if she had been legit, the minute something percieved to be “free” comes along, things get ugly fast. There is nothing at BCF that’s worth getting mobbed over.

Gotta agree with biteme. I agree that the terrible part of this story is the jokers that were in the store who rioted. That doesn’t make all of us animals, just those who will take from others who have something because they think its owed to them. That ideology is at the center of why people commit crimes. They have a skewed sense of reality and have no accountability for their lives. Everything is everyone else’s fault and we all owe them. Personally, if someone came into a store and asked to buy my clothes, I would decline. I have never understood why people take handouts instead of do the work to get it for themselves.

Why does free anything bring out such a reaction, there really is no shortage of losers in any state

People are such gullible morons. Linda Brown is my new hero, terrific prank, and pure genius, even if she is insane.

When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.

Have to agreee with that one, E Diddy. Linda Brown is not the villain here. The real culprit is found in that ungrateful mob, those who raged when told (yet again) that there is NO FREE LUNCH.

Wow. I believe the daughter has said that her mother had been “off her meds.”

There’s no excuse for the riot and thieving. That says alot about the people involved in those activities. Trash!
