Four Teens Accused Of Stabbing Kimberly Cates To Death

MONT VERNON, New Hampshire – Residents of the small, hilly town of Mont Vernon are in a state of shock after four teens entered a home to rob it, and attacked a 41-year-old mother and her 11-year-old daughter. Using a machete and a knife, Kimberly Cates was attacked while she lay in her bed and killed by multiple sharp injuries to the head, torso, left arm, and left leg. Her daughter survived the attack although she suffered severe stabbing injuries and spent hours in surgery. The attack was a completely random one, Cate’s home chosen simply because it was isolated. “They picked the house at random because it was in an isolated area,” prosecutor N. William Delker said today during the teens’ arraignments in Milford District Court. “Before they entered the home, all four defendants were aware that the intent was to kill the occupants.”

, Steven Spader, 17; Christopher Gribble, 19; William Marks, 18; and Quinn Glover, 17 have all been arrested for their part in the crimes. Spader and Gribble were charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit first degree murder. Marks and Glover were charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and armed robbery – although prosecutors claim that Glover and Marks were both armed with a deadly weapon, and Glover was fully aware that the occupants of the home would be killed.

Cate’s husband was away on business but flew back to be with his daughter in the hospital. She is expected to survive, but she will obviously have some major issues because of this. What a pity that these idiots could not have broken into a tweaker couple’s house or something. By all reports, Kimberly was an awesome lady. John Quinlan, a Mont Vernon selectman, and friend of the Cates family for five years described 42-year-old mother and nurse Kimberly Cates as an unusually friendly, happy woman devoted to her daughter.
“She was very much the extrovert,” Quinlan said. “The mother and daughter were inseparable. They were almost best friends as well. That’s what I think makes this worse because you can’t imagine anyone having a bad thought about her or a gripe with her.”
Some information on the teens have come to light as friends all report the same thing. Four kids who all fell into a downward spiral over recent years. Spader was a longtime Boy Scout who in recent months grew increasingly distant and depressed. He has a lengthy criminal record including threatening teens with a tire iron after ramming their car, charges of possessing stolen stereo equipment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and marijuana possession charges. Most of these within recent months.

Gribble was a home-schooled Mormon who was planning to become a church missionary. Like a lot of kids raised in that environment (not all, people) he ended up rebelling X10 becoming a dark and brooding figure itching to lash out and become very fond of knives. It is reported that Marks is insecure and angst-ridden teen, and took a turn for the worse after meeting Spader. The same goes for Glover, a musician who performed in coffee shops, sang in the chorus, and starred in a school production of CabaretCabaret reviews

While New Hampshire does have a death penalty, these boys are not eligible for it. According to the New Hampshire attorney general’s office, the crime does not fit within the state’s definition of a capital murder. The death penalty is only on the table when a law enforcement or judicial officer is killed in the line of duty, in the case of murder-for-hire, if the accused is currently serving a life sentence or when the murder occurs in connection with a kidnapping, drug crime or sexual assault.
Whatever. I am sure that this case will continue to get more heinous as some of these teens turn on each other (my bet is on Marks) and the details on exactly what transpired in that home is revealed. To be able to attack a defenseless woman in her home while she slept in her bed is one thing, but to be able to do the same to an 11-year-old girl? Seriously, fuck ‘em. Fuck their childhoods.

Well, it’s good to know that the lives of cops and “judicial officers” are worth more than those of ordinary citizens in New Hampshire. And would this crime really have been more heinous if they had been in the house looking for drugs, or if these victims were drug dealers?
What a monumentally stupid fucking law. I can see the argument for abolishing the death penalty altogether — the way it’s applied is often insane and irrational.
And yeah, the idea that cops’ lives are somehow worth more is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, and my dad is a retired cop! UGH.

AGREED x a billion. Cops who die while doing their jobs are truly heroic, but fuck man, they KNOW the risks and they put themselves in that position. The Cates woman was asleep in her goddamn bed! If there’s going to be a death penalty (which, when all is said and done, I don’t support at all for any reason anyway), then these four men deserve it just as they would have deserved it had they killed a cop.

If you go into a house to “rob” it and decide before hand that everyone in the house is going to die, than it’s really more about murder than robbery. These punks just wanted to kill someone. I hope every last one of them gets the harshest punishment possible under the law. The two “followers” will probably cut deals, though.
I wonder which one actually did the stabbing, or did Spader stab one and Gribble the other?

NH’s Death Penalty Task Force Study Commission was already set to meet on Oct. 21st to review NH’s death penalty law. With any luck the public’s outrage could bring a change (expansion!) to NH’s application of the death penalty.

This hits really close to home. I grew up in Amherst (the town Quinn and Marks are from) and my daughter went to school in Mont Vernon. It’s a small and beautiful town. Kids still play unattended until the street lights come on and most don’t lock their doors.
I have a few friends who still live in the area and one said she heard the little girl’s toes were cut off. Anyone else hear more about the injuries?
And Kim was a tough chick. Triumphed over a lot where she grew up in AZ. Had to deal with gangs, carried a gun in AZ and knew how to use it. It was stolen at some point. She moved to NH to get away from all that. I don’t know if she still had a gun. But even if she did being attacked in her bed by 2 crazy assholes not sure there was much she could have done.
Makes me sick. Who could kill and mutilate a mother and child?!

This story was on Nancy Grace, They did say the girls, toes were hacked off by a machete, one of the guest said her toes were removed, and Nancy had a fit. She talked with a specialist about the chance of re-attaching and all the in and outs about replacing them before the tissue begins to die. I think they found the toes in the bed, after she was in surgery.

I know our judicial system is fucked up, I know some believe that rehabilitation is the way to go for some young offenders; but I think the pieces of fucking shit should die. Don’t pass go, once they are found guilty hang them from the nearest tree. Honestly, society and people have to realize that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated. My GOD this woman and her child had the right to live a nice peaceful and happy life without asses like this taking it all away and for what? The thrill?? Ugh…this makes my stomach turn!

I think Chris Gribble and Steve Spader are pure evil. I think Marks and Quinn just went along with it. But why? How could either of the other two who didn’t do the killing just leave a little girl and her Mom like that.
I just can’t believe they cut off her toes! And then she still managed to call 911. I can’t imagine the pain and terror she went through.

GRACE: Straight out to Joe Dwinell with the “Boston Herald.” Joe, I`ve just heard the disturbing news that the little 11-year-old girl`s toes were hacked off.
JOE DWINELL, REPORTER/EDITOR, “THE BOSTON HERALD”: Exactly. Sources tell “The Herald” that the girl`s toes were chopped off in this heinous attack. She`s now recovering in the Children`s Hospital in Boston and they discovered her toes at the crime scene.
GRACE: To Dr. Lee Vinocur with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Vinocur, is there any way — I know of other body parts — hands, legs, fingers that have — and more — that have been reattached?
Is that a possibility here?
VINOCUR: Well, I mean, it depends on the amount of time and when they found the toes and if they transported them and they didn`t have a long ischemic time. But certainly, with fingers, which are more useful, it depends on which toe. A big toe, they will spend the time to transplant because it helps with balance. But sometimes a baby toe, to go through all that surgery, they might not do that.
GRACE: Why did you say ischemic?
What is that?
VINOCUR: Ischemia means how long the toes were off before they could put them on ice and get the blood vessels to contract so that the tissue doesn`t start to die.

VINOCUR: So you want to get the, you know, the part brought to the hospital.
GRACE: As fast as you can.
To the lawyers, Susan Moss, Mickey Sherman, Anne Bremner. You know, Mickey Sherman, that was to torture that little girl. That was to torture her. Now, you can`t tell me anybody is caught up in the heat of passion, they`re all in a pack mentality and then I find out the little 11-year-old girl has her toes chopped off with a machete. I can hardly form the words, Sherman.
SHERMAN: I didn`t do it. The problem is it`s indefensible. It is absolutely indefensible. I mean, you know, this is why people embrace the death penalty. And, you know, we saw because of the fallibility of the criminal justice system and The Innocence Project results, we say we`ve got to get rid of the death penalty.
And then comes one of these cases, which I call the end of the end of the death penalty, because we all want to say, let`s kill these guys and then we`ll get — get rid of the death penalty.

The father is out of town working to make a living. He leaves for one night. That night, his wife is murdered asleep in her own bed and his daughter is nearly hacked to death. And now, Boy Scouts and a Mormon missionary being held on murder charges.

DWINELL: I can tell you a lot. Christopher Gribble — that`s the one with the knife. He was supposedly going to go on a Mormon mission. But he also spoke about how the commandment of thou shalt not kill was — was — he was having trouble getting over that.
Facebook friends tell us that Christopher was just racked with hate, anger, rage. And this is also true of Stephen Spader. He, too, was dark. He had turned from a kid who was into, you know, theater, to someone who is just full of hate.
They went, in the early morning hours of Sunday, and just hacked this — allegedly hacked this family apart.

According to Christa Dacus of Amherst, whose daughter had been a good friend of Glover’s, Glover was seen crying in school, and police were able to hone in on him and his friends after Marks told a fellow student about the murder. That student called police, Dacus said.
So it looks like Marks and Quinn cracked at school.
