Keighley Alyea’s Body Found, 3 Men In Custody

October 6, 2009 at 11:00 am by

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – I was going to put this up today if she had not been found yet, but looks like I will be putting it up for the opposite reason. Police said they have recovered Keighly Alyea’s body but gave no other details aside from having three men in custody in connection with her death. Alyea, 18, was last seen with her vehicle last Tuesday. Original reports at that time stated she may have been with Jaymes Dean Beebe, 22, and Dustin Brian Hilt, 18. On Sunday, her 1993 green Mazda 626 was located parked unoccupied on the street in the 6200 block of Marty. A third man, Sean Merritt, was questioned. On Monday night police searched two homes, one of them belongs to the relatives of one of the men originally questioned. No other info is being released at this point. The suspects in custody have not been officially named, nor where Alyea’s body was located.

Keighley Alyeas Body Found, 3 Men In CustodyAlyea’s father posted a message on the Facebook group page:

I would first like to say how much I appreciate all of your efforts to help me find my daughter. I cannot even explain how much it means to me that everyone was so thoughtful. The Overland Park Police just announced that they have 3 people in custody… for the murder of Keighley. They are going to bring her home to us real soon. I must go be with my family now, but please never forget her. I love you, Keighley. Dad.”

Keighley had was involved in a domestic violence situation on Sept. 28 when an ex-boyfriend and his sister got into an violent altercation in which Keighley intervened. That ex was one of the people originally questioned. After going missing, all communication from her had ceased, which threw up red flags immediately.

She would get on the Internet every single day,” said her uncle, Ed Frentrop, “and talk to people on Facebook and talk to people on her phone and text people. She talked to her mom and dad every single day. She talked to my daughter almost every single day through texting and whatnot. Then everything stopped.

Not much in way of other information at this time, but I will be sure to update the story as more information becomes official.

Bless this poor child and her family. It is terribly hard to accept it when a person’s death didn’t have to happen. I pray these bastards get what they have coming to them.

No one was arrested and no charges were filed.

Aylea’s family said it’s been nearly a week since anyone has heard from her.

“No one on Facebook’s gotten in contact with her,” said Jame Hayes, father. “No text messages, no phone calls, just gone.”

Friends have launched a Facebook page for Alyea, hoping that it will help bring her home.

Keighley’s mother, Kelly Bastel, who lives in the Ozarks, said it’s not like her daughter to leave for long periods of time.

“It’s not like Keighley,” she said. “Keighley loves her family. She’s a person that can’t live without contact.”

Police said they fear Alyea may be in danger. Just last week she was involved in a domestic violence incident with an ex-boyfriend and another individual.

“She’s been a victim of violence in the past, so we want to make absolutely sure she’s okay,” said Overland Park police captain, Jim Weaver.

The ex-boyfriend was arrested and released. Over the weekend, police revisited the ex-boyfriend and questioned him about Alyea’s disappearance.

On Saturday morning police went to the home of Jaymes Beebe. He said they have the wrong man if they’re trying to pin Alyea’s disappearance on him.

“They’re calling me a suspect,” he said. “They came here at five in the morning with my house surrounded. That makes me look like a suspect.”

But by late Saturday afternoon, police dropped Beebe from the suspect list.

Beebe said Alyea’s disappearance is overblown.

“She’s trying to get attention,” he said. “That’s how she is. She’s an attention getter. She messed up with a lot of people where nobody wants to talk with her anymore.”

But Alyea’s mother said all she knows is that her daughter is gone and she wants her home.

“I just picture her walking through the door,” said Bastel. “I just want a phone call.”

Alyea’s father said he wants the same thing.

“Ya know, everybody wants to think the best,” Hayes said. “No matter what the situation she’s in, nothing will make me happier than to hear my doorbell ring and see her standing there.”

Alyea is a white female with black hair and brown eyes. She is 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 113 lbs. It is unknown what she was wearing at the time she went missing. If you see Alyea, please notify the Overland Park Police Department or the Tips Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.

There is a photo showing “Dustin” tattoo’d on her left shoulder

Police said Tuesday Alyea’s body was found Monday around 9:30 p.m. in a farm field near the intersection of East 235th Street and South State Route K Highway, in Cass County, Missouri.

Investigators are not saying much more about the circumstances of her death, including how they believe she died or how long her body may have been there.

Not sure if that was Beebe there above as here is a different remark

Another person they wanted to find was James Bebee. He is not one of the men booked into Johnson County Jail.

He said before Alyea’s body was found he felt like a suspect.

“I would not try to do anything to harm her in any way shape or form. She’s a likable person,” Bebee said. “There’s no reason to hurt her for anything that she does.

Beebe was one of the last people to see Alyea.

    http://www.nbcactionnews.com/content/breaking/story/3-Men-Charged-in-Keighleys-Death/AQOXsZjkz0SZHFXqish9uw.cspx

According to Mattox’s charging documents, the crimes occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The documents did not include the time of the alleged crimes

At a 3 p.m. news conference Tuesday to announce the charges Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe thanked the Overland Park Police

Howe would not say where investigators believe Keighley died, but said that Kansas law stipulates if various crimes are committed in different counties or states, like the ones the three men charged allegedly committed, the individuals involved can be charged in any or all of those counties or states. Keighley was found Monday around 9:30 p.m. in a farm field near the intersection of East 235th Street and South State Route K Highway, in Cass County, Mo.

“We feel confident we have the jurisdiction to file these charges,” Howe said.

When asked about specific details of the case, Howe said his office would not disclose any information about the investigation so as to not impede the investigation and the prosecution.

Howe said he has not ruled out the possibility of pursuing the death penalty, but reiterated that as of Tuesday, state charges were the only that had been filed. A determination as to whether or not capital murder charges would be filed would come after the investigation, which he called “ongoing,” concluded.

Howe said the suspects charged are the only three he expects to be arrested or charged in the case.

Their cases have been consolidated, meaning they will all stand trial together and their bond is set at $2 million each. All three made their first court appearance on Tuesday and are next set to appear in court on Oct. 15.

Family and friends are grappling with why Keighley was killed.

“She did not deserve for any of that to happen to her. Regardless of what you’ve done to anybody you don’t deserve death,” says James Beebe who was a friend of Keighley’s.

NBC Action News checked the backgrounds of the three suspects and found a connection between Mattox and the area where Keighley’s body was found.

Mattox was pulled over at 245th and Camp Brand in Cass County last December. That’s just a little more than three miles from where police discovered the body yesterday.

A Look Into the Men Accused of Keighley’s Murder

Keighley’s friends and family have a lot to say about one of the suspects, her ex-boyfriend, Dustin Hilt.

The 18-year-old from Shawnee, Kan., had an on-and-off-again relationship with Keighley for nearly two years. The couple shared an apartment at one point and even had each other’s names tattooed on their bodies.

Friends say their relationship was very rocky and even violent and times. Keighley’s best friend Jessika Beebe says Hilt was abusive. Beebe, who called Keighley a sister, said she tried to keep the two apart.

Those close to the couple say they also used drugs together.

According to friends and relatives, Keighley and Hilt split up months ago. The 18-year-old had her own apartment and was starting to get her life on the right track. They say she was drug-free, working at Arby’s and planning to go to Johnson County Community College in January.

Only recently, friends say Hilt and Keighley started to talk again. Beebe says Keighley was planning to see him the night she went missing. The best friends were together at Keighley’s apartment. Beebe fell asleep and when she woke up, she says Keighley was gone.

Friends of the teen know less about the other two suspects in the case.

Joseph Mattox, 21, is Hilt’s cousin from Overland Park. Friends say the cousins spent a lot of time together.

Gerald Calbeck, from Merriam, is said to be good friends with Mattox. But acquaintances say Calbeck, 18, doesn’t have a history of getting into trouble. Many were surprised to learn that he is one of the suspects in the case.

“If you talk to anyone who knows him they will say no way, there’s no way he can be involved,” said Calbeck’s dad, Derek Bohlken. “I can’t give any details but I owe him the benefit of the doubt. I believe that he’s innocent. Unless I hear it from his own lips, I’m not going to believe it,”

Bohlken says he feels terrible about what happened to Keighley and he feels for her family.

He says he just wants his son back home and the truth to come out.

All three men made their first court appearances in court Tuesday, Oct. 6. They are due back in court Oct. 15. Each is charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

Keighley’s Family Reveals Details of Her Death

They said her killers attacked Alyea twice to make sure she died.

“Somewhere along the drive out east of Harrisonville, she regained consciousness and at that time, they had the option to do the right thing and they chose to finish killing her,” Frentrop said.

Alyea’s relatives recognize Hilt. His first name is tattooed on Alyea’s back. However, her father wants it removed prior to Alyea’s funeral.

“He said there is no way his daughter is going to be buried with (Dustin’s) name on her body,” Frentrop said.

Hilt and Alyea had a two-year relationship. It ended several months ago. Frentrop said Hilt worked for Alyea’s father until he got bad vibe about Hilt. Frentrop said Alyea’s father told her to stay away from Hilt.

“She really didn’t want to see him again,” said Don Alyea, the victim’s grandfather. “I don’t know what brought him back in the picture. She liked him. She was kind of fickle that way.”

Alyea’s grandfather said Hilt was abusive and into drugs. He said Keighley was trying to distance herself. She recently began classes at Johnson County Community College to become a nurse.

She disappeared last Tuesday. Relatives said her death hurts a lot. But, so far, nothing is easing their pain or anger toward the suspects.

“It’s bad enough that we lost her,” Frentrop said. “But, to know that they had a second chance to do the right thing, it’s ridiculous.”

Friends and family plan to have a public memorial for Keighley Alyea Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Westside Family Church in Lenexa.
