Concord, California – In 1991, 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard was abducted by a man and woman in a grey sedan as she walked to catch her Lake Tahoe school bus. Her stepfather could only watch in horror as Jaycee was dragged into the car two blocks away, kicking and screaming. You can read the full details of the abduction at The Charley Project. A massive manhunt ensued, the media rounds made, but she was never heard from again. Police had suspects over the years, including a defrocked priest, but the case of Jaycee Dugard had gone cold. Until yesterday when a 29-year-old woman walked into a police station in Antioch, California, claiming to be the missing girl.

20090827ecct0828jaycee1 Jaycee Dugard, Abducted in 1991, Has Been Found Alive And Well?Jaycee Dugard’s stepfather, who has since separated from Jaycee’s mother, says California authorities have a woman and Dugard’s suspected captors in custody. He also stated that Jaycee’s mother “got a call from the FBI, they said they had found JC and she was alive,” he said in a phone interview from the couple’s Riverside County home. “They put her (the woman) on the phone. My wife talked with her and is convinced she is Jaycee. Jaycee remembers everything.

The woman claiming to be Jaycee has spoken to family members, and they believe she is the girl who was kidnapped 18 years ago. Dugard’s mother, Terry Probyn, is flying to Northern California to meet the woman claiming to be her daughter with her 19-year-old daughter who was only 1-year-old at the time of her sister’s kidnapping. There is a news conference planned for 6 p.m. ET, but court records show that a search warrant was issued Wednesday for 1554 Walnut Ave., Antioch. Records indicate it is the address of Philllip and Nancy Garrido. Phillip Garrido, 58, and a registered sex offender, was being held on $1 million bail for charges including committing lewd acts with a minor, rape and kidnapping. His wife was being held on $1 million bail on charges that include kidnapping and a conspiracy to committ robbery or rape.

I had no plans on writing up this story as everyone and their mother will have heard about it by tomorrow and the name Jaycee Dugard will be in the mouths of everyone as the news grabs hold of this story. But you know what? Fuck it. We have so many articles on here that end in tragedy, this ending is so rare – even if it is bittersweet – that I felt it deserved to be put up.

Let me take this time to also say that while I am happy this chick wasn’t found in the form of skeletal remains at the bottom of a well somewhere, I also would like to tell the chick in the glasses and ponytail in the video above that she should really call me. I would have a lot of fun disappointing her for about 15 minutes. Give or take.

UPDATE:
Thanks, dmax and Harley. Here is Phillip Garrido’s picture:

It’ll be interesting to see who it was that kidnapped her and why she waited so long to come forward.

  • Harley_Tech

I can’t wait to hear her side of all this. How can someone steal a child and then convince them that they are theirs?

She was what 10 years old. She had to realize she was kidnapped so how did her captors convince her that she belonged where she was?

How is it that as she got old enough to seek information on her own, she didn’t? Did she never see a milk carton with her own picture on it?

It all just seems so weird to me that after she was around 15 years old she was not more curious about her own history.

News conference today at 6PM EDT.

So Carl Probyn, was Jaycee’s stepfather and the last one to see her alive, Guess the cops, FBI and family members never did believe his story. Bet he is one happy camper today. Poor Mom Terry Probyn thought some one was yanking her chain about her daughter.

Carl Probyn, Jaycee’s stepfather, said his wife and daughter were flying to Northern California to meet Dugard, now 29, who disappeared on June 10, 1991. Probyn told The Sacramento Bee Thursday morning that his wife, Terry, spoke with the young woman by phone Wednesday night. The Probyns, who are separated, live in Southern California, Carl in Orange County and Terry in Riverside. Terry Probyn and their daughter, Shayna, 19, boarded a 6 a.m. flight to the Bay Area to meet with Dugard, Carl Probyn said. Probyn said he is elated.

“I’m just pleased that she is alive and well,” said Probyn, a 60-year-old Orange County wallpaper contractor.

Probyn, who has yet to speak with his stepdaughter, said he believes suspects who might have been involved with the abduction are in custody. Dugard was on her way to school when authorities said she was pulled into a stranger’s car just a block away from her South Lake Tahoe home. Probyn said he heard her scream and saw a man and a woman drive his stepdaughter away in a gray two-tone sedan.

One person in the car was described as a 30-year-old woman with long, dark hair. Jaycee was last seen dressed in a pink windbreaker, white T-shirt and pink stretch pants.

The stepfather said Shayna Probyn called Wednesday about 4 p.m. and said, “Mom has something to say to you. Are you sitting down?” His wife told him: “They found Jaycee. She is alive.”

The couple then cried for about 10 minutes as they spoke to each other. Probyn said agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation called his wife at work and told her that they had Jaycee. Thinking it was a joke, she told the caller she did not appreciate what she thought was a ruse. The FBI then put the young woman on the telephone.

“My wife said that who she spoke to remembers everything,” Carl Probyn said. “My wife and Jaycee were joined at the hip.” Probyn was the last person to see Jaycee on the day she disappeared. He took four lie detector tests and endured suspicion of involvement in the abduction for nearly two decades.

The FBI put me through the wringer, being questioned and having people say the stepdad did something,” he said. “I have been kind of the villain these past 18 years.”

SACRAMENTO, CA — News10 has learned new details about how investigators uncovered the fact that Jaycee Dougard was alive and well nearly 20 years after she was kidnapped.

El Dorado County Lt. Bryan Gomitz and Undersheriff Fred Kollar told News10 they received a call Wednesday from a detective in the Bay Area who said “I’ve got Jaycee Dugard sitting across the table from me.”

According to investigators, Jaycee Duggard came into a police station in Contra Costa County with a couple on an unrelated matter.

The officer at the front desk was suspicious of the man and ran his name, which came back as a registered sex offender.

Sources told News10 Phillip Garrido, 58, was in the South Lake Tahoe area the day Jaycee disappeared.

More information about the investigation is expected to be released at a press conference on the investigation will take place at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, ABC News has learned that Jaycee Dugard is the mother of two children.

  • Taz

Damn I hate this editor, it ate part of my post. Here is part of what that press release says. He brought her and the 2 kids to a parole meeting.

On August 26, 2009, a CDCR parole agent brought in parolee Phillip Garrido for questioning. The day before, suspicious activity had been reported when Garrido, a registered sex offender, was seen with two small children at U.C. Berkeley.

CDCR involved the Concord Police Department to assist in determining the identity of the two children and an adult female who accompanied Garrido to CDCR’s parole office in Concord. The diligent questioning and follow up by the parolee’s agent of record led to Garrido revealing his kidnapping of the adult female. It was further revealed by Garrido that she was Jaycee Lee Dugard and that the children were his.

WELCOME BACK JAYCEE DUGARD! Now begins the arduous task of deprogramming and assimilating her back into normal life. She hasn’t experienced a normal life since 1991. Satanists or no, cults are real and as dangerous as the loonies who lead them. On his blog this Garrido character claims to be able to move things with his mind. Arkham Asylum, table for one! Actually, tabel for two! This bastard had at least his wife in on this. Here’s the saddest part – the part I can’t quite wrap my mind around, despite the obvious reality. We would be so surprised to discover the number of people who went missing as kids in the 80s and 90s are still very much alive, but have no idea how to start to come home, or where home even is at this point. A lot of these kids end up abandoned by their abductors, and convinced that no one wants them, they survive on the street usually through prostitution. Watch “Gardens of the Night”, or go down to any urban are and ask some of the younger people about their stories. You will hear a disturbing number of “kidnapped when I was a kid” tales. Ah, hell. Just hell.

The unnamed authorities also told the TV station that the victim, Jaycee Lee Dugard, bore several children for the sex offender, Phillip Garrido, 58, and they said Garrido and his wife, Nancy, 54, held Dugard in a shed or other structure in the backyard.

he says there were a rudimentary outhouse and shower out there, along w/ a soundproof shed..

Also, by doing the math, she gave birth at approximately 13yrs old.. My heart goes out to this poor girl and these children.. They are 11 and 15.. I can’t imagine the living conditions they were subjected to. Not to mention a 13yr old girl already going through everything she went through having to give birth there and not in a hospital.. It’s a good thing she didn’t have any complications during birth or else we would have a different outcome for this story.

  • Rockin Ma

Phillip Garrido is a registered sex offender

stemming from a rape conviction, who had re-registered every year, said Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. His parole did not prohibit him from being near young children.

The California corrections department said Garrido was paroled in June 1999 from a Nevada prison for rape, and transferred to the custody of California parole agents.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Phillip Garrido was convicted of kidnapping in Nevada. He was imprisoned in December 1980 and released on parole in January 1988. After a parole violation, he was sent back to prison from April 1993 to August 1993, according to the records.

Here is some info from the live news conference.

    Jaycee was known as “Alissa.”

A hidden backyard was found within the residence backyard, where Dugard and her children are suspected to have lived in a group of sheds hidden from outside view.

A vehicle matching the one described at the scene of the crime in 1991 was also found.

Authorities were first alerted to Garrido on Tuesday when he and the two young girls were on the U.C. Berkeley campus to hand out literature, Kollar said. He said a female police officer thought the interaction between Garrido and the girls was strange and questioned him.

The two girls have never attended school nor visited a doctor, Kollar said.

Good call, HT. The mom was 20 when she had Jaycee, so who knows. I was 20 when I had my son and I also gave him my maiden name as his last name. However, I DID list his father on the birth record, so when I look it up, my son shows up twice. (once with my name and once with his father’s). Because Jayce only shows up with the mother’s name, this tells me she didn’t put the father on the certificate. That doesn’t necessarily mean she doesn’t know who he is. Heck, there’s a good chance he is watching all this go down today and has NO idea that that’s his offspring.

kidnapping store clerk from same area Jaycee was kidnapped from Lake Tahoe ?

    http://www.truecrimereport.com/2009/08/meet_phillip_craig_garrido.php

Long before Jaycee Dugard disappeared, her alleged kidnapper was an experienced predator.

Public records show that Phillip Garrido was born in Contra Costa, CA on April 5, 1951. Carson City, Nevada records indicate a marriage between Garrido and Christine Perreira in March, 1973. The marriage lasted just 7 years, and the couple’s divorce was final in October, 1980.

It may be remarkable that the union lasted that long, for in 1977, Phillip Garrido was convicted of kidnapping a woman on November 23, 1976. From the Reno Evening Gazette, February 12, 1977:

Garrido was convicted of abducting the woman at a South Lake Tahoe grocery store parking lot then driving her to Reno, where she was kept for several hours in a mini-warehouse.

[Garrido] faces Washoe County charges of possession of a controlled substance, rape and sex perversion.
Garrido was 25 and working as a musician in Reno when he abducted the 25-year-old victim, who was a casino worker. A November 1976 account of the crime in the Nevada State Journal told of Garrido knocking on the window of the victim’s car, claiming his own vehicle was disabled. He asked for a ride.

They had only driven a short distance when the woman said Garrido grabbed her. He slapped on handcuffs and taped her mouth. They drove to Reno and the storage unit where Garrido assaulted her.

It appeared to investigating officers that Garrido had turned the unit into a residence, even though his address was elsewhere in the city. Detectives found a regular 70s-era sexual predator’s bachelor pad – rugs on the floors and walls, porno mags, a projector, “marital aids,” wine, hot water and oddly, a spotlight.

Chillingly, another woman in the area reported after Garrido’s arrest that he had tried to kidnap her before he succeeded with the casino worker.

This 1976 abduction marked Garrido’s first interaction with the FBI, which is also investigating what happened to Jaycee Dugard. The feds became involved because the abduction crossed the NV/CA state line.

I would like to hear from these woman, includint the ex wife and the brother…… I am going to throw up

Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in prison and served nearly 11 years in Nevada for a federal kidnapping conviction, said Suzanne Pardee, a spokeswoman for Nevada state prisons.

He also served seven months concurrently for a conviction for rape by force or fear at the medium-security Northern Nevada Correctional Center. On June 8, 1999 Garrido was paroled from a Nevada state prison for sexual assault. He also has a prior arrest record of possession of marijuana.

The last known address for the Garrido’s was in Antioch in Contra Costa County.

News10 went to the neighborhood of Garrido’s last known address in Antioch Thursday, where investigators from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s office and FBI investigators have been posted since News10 broke the story Wedenesday evening.

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department confirmed reports that neighbors had called the cops on Garrido over the years after seeing several girls in a shed area of his backyard. No word on what happened on the investigation after those reports were made.

However, authorities did confirm in a Thursday afternoon press conference that Dugard was forced to live in tents and outbuildings in the back of the home with two children.

Officers said Dugard is the mother of those children and Garrido is the father.

Contra Costa officials said Garrido was compliant with and registered yearly as a sex offender as required by law.

So who’s the lazy ass that was investigating when the neighbors called ?

one more thing, what does sentenced to 50 and served nearly 11 (7 months for rape by force or fear- is there any other type of fricken rape) —— then in 1999 was paroled Whats going on here ?

    amazing justice ……..

the press conference said convicted in 71 (about age 20) then it talks about his first wife (last post) 1973 – 1980 – kidnap jaycee 91 – parole 1999

    This timeline is not working!!

So, basically we have a sick fuck who should have been executed but didn’t even serve half of his sentence allowing him the capability to commit this heinous crime. He went to prison in 99, so the wife also held them captive? Neighbors calls the police and it was ignored. Jaycee and her children will never be normal after living this nightmare. Way to go justice system! Total FAIL!

Girl grew up locked away (CNN) —

From the time she was an 11-year-old, blue-eyed, freckle-faced blonde until she was a 29-year-old woman with two children, Jaycee Dugard was kept locked away in a shed by a couple police say abducted her.

Jaycee Dugard was locked in a shed tucked under a blue tarp in her alleged captor’s backyard.

1 of 2 She was more than 160 miles from home, and her family had no idea where she was.

Nobody else knew she was there except the couple that snatched her off the street in front of her house in South Lake Tahoe, California, in 1991, and took her straight to the soundproof shed, police said.

Dugard’s pocket of Phillip and Nancy Garrido’s backyard in Antioch, California, was so overgrown no one even knew it existed.

The details about Dugard’s time in captivity emerged Thursday after one of Northern California’s most enduring mysteries was solved and the Garridos were arrested and accused of her kidnapping.

Anyone who came across the couple’s backyard, littered with garbage cans and a dishwasher, would assume that it ended at a six-foot fence.

“You could walk through the backyard and never know there was another set of living circumstances,” said Fred Kollar, undersheriff of El Dorado County. “There was nothing that would cause you to question it. You can’t see it from either adjoining property. It was presumably well arranged.”

    Don’t Miss
Sheriff: Kidnap victim, children kept in shed
But tucked away beyond the tangle of bushes, high grass and trees was a blue tarp that concealed the only world Dugard had known since her abduction.

The 10-foot-by-10-foot shed was equipped with a makeshift bathroom and shower, along with electricity supplied by an extension cord. Kollar compared the primitive conditions to camping.

Dugard lived for several years by herself in the shed, flanked by two tents. The shed was locked from the outside.

She grew up and had her captor’s children inside the shed, and raised them there. “None of them have ever been to school, they’ve never been to a doctor,” Kollar said. “They were kept in complete isolation in this compound, if you will.”

The children, both girls, are now 15 and 11.

“They are all in good health,” Kollar said in response to a question about how Dugard and her children are doing. “But living in a backyard for the last 18 years does take its toll.”

I know this may come out wrong to some, but if I were this girl’s parents – knowing what we know now, I think that deep inside I would be wishing they had never found her at all, or found her dead. For me, even though she is alive, this is an even worse nightmare.

This time line is very Iffy his wife would of held her captive before she even had his children because in one of the comments he was arrested in 93? she was abducted in 91!!!! that woman could of let her go many times! It is an understatement to say you should have never been let back into society after the first time you got caught. We all know you’ve only been caught a few times compared to what you’ve actually done. I concede that there should always be that “tall oak tree” in the town square to remind creeps like you that justice, when served, is sweet and on display for all to see…..and a few to hinder

What about the 2 blonde toddlers? The ones referenced in the guys own interview (& other places?) You think they are the babies from the 15 yo? Oh gosh, I pray not – but where else did the 2 four year olds come from?

  • thebooblady

Morbid, I agree. Jaycee and her children, may never be able to get over this. At least with Shawn Hornbeck he was eventually allowed access to the outside world and was rescued while he was still a child. Then again, Steven Stayner went on to have a family of his own and by all I have read, he was able to live a normal life. I guess time will tell.

  • sheevaa

This is…possibly one of the most twisted things I’ve seen in this place…and that’s saying a lot!

“None of them have ever been to school, they’ve never been to a doctor,”

My god, those poor kids! How..HOW do you learn to be a part of society after living up to your teen years in a shed? No schooling, no doctors, dentists, no normal interactions with other people. Poor Jaycee wouldn’t be much better off. Jesus…Garrido and his wife are monsters, straight out of the worst horror movie.

She didn’t walk into the cop shop – the tard took her to a meeting with his parole officer!!!

The break in the case came Tuesday afternoon when a University of California, Berkeley, police officer noticed Mr. Garrido trying to hand out religious literature on campus and asked him for identification. A check of police databases revealed that Mr. Garrido, 58, was on parole.

On Wednesday, Mr. Garrido was called to a parole office in Concord, about 35 miles east of San Francisco, for a meeting with his case officer. At that meeting, Mr. Kollar said, Mr. Garrido brought the two children, his wife and Ms. Dugard, who was using the name Allissa.

Mr. Kollar said the parole officer, who had visited the Garridos’ home on numerous occasions, had never seen Allissa or the children and was suspicious. At some point in the interview on Wednesday, Ms. Dugard apparently told the parole agent her true identity, and both she and the Garridos revealed information known “only by the victim and kidnappers.” The Garridos were subsequently arrested and were to be arraigned on Friday.

    NY Times Article

Also in that article, the neighbors knew that he was an RSO & “strange” and that he had the hidden shed, but never thought a crime was going on.

  • solange822001

    God how unfair and heartbreaking:

Probyn said his wife, from whom he is separated, was devastated by the kidnapping. He said for 10 years after the crime, she would take a week off work at Christmas and on the anniversary of the abduction and spend the time crying at home.

speaking as a shrink, i am awed by the level of manic thought disorder shown in his blog… i’m sure he wasn’t always like that, while he may have been a big-time weirdo all his life, he obviously had to be extremely organized to have done this and kept it going for so long.

it sounds to me like something broke the camel’s back recently, leading him to go publicly bonkers and to confess to his PO. wonder what the straw was?

i sure hope this woman and her daughters are able to recover from this horrific captivity.

  • akika666

i just listened to that phone interview. amazing that this person was flying under everyone’s radar, especially recently. woweewooo, he’s nuttier than a snickers.

of course that’s never going to be a defense, because there will be no evidence he was legally insane when he committed the crime initially, and kept on committing it, day after day, year after year.

i’m curious about his wife. what’s the deelio there? she needs to go down hard for this too.

  • solange822001

THIS is the kind of stupidity that we have in this country today that makes this kind of shit possible:

But neighbors said there were clues even before a parole agent on Wednesday noticed Dugard, now 29, who accompanied Garrido, his wife and the children to a parole office.

Neighbor Diane Doty said she could see the tents and often heard children playing in the backyard, the corner of which abuts her own backyard. She said she even suspected the children lived in the tents, but her husband said she should leave the family alone.

“I asked my husband, ‘Why is he living in tents?’” she said. “And he said, ‘Maybe that is how they like to live.’”

This fucking moron thought it was acceptable to never see children go in and out of the house, but to hear children playing in a hidden backyard in tents?????? What is so hard about simply reporting something suspicious? So what if it ends up being nothing??? At least it was checked out. What the hell is wrong with people nowadays that they see things like this and DO NOTHING??????????

What about the 2 blonde toddlers? The ones referenced in the guys own interview (& other places?) You think they are the babies from the 15 yo? Oh gosh, I pray not – but where else did the 2 four year olds come from?

I tried listening for that and never heard anything about “2 four yeard olds?” I even read the transcript and he never mentions any 4 year olds?

He references his own two daughters (which are 11 and 15) but never any toddlers. (as far as I could tell).

  • solange822001

Here might be what you guys saw, it doesnt say toddlers, it says two cute little blond girls:

People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

“In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him,” said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburg, Calif., who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido’s printing business for the last decade.

Three times in recent years, Garrido arrived at Allen’s showroom with two “cute little blond girls” in tow, he said.

So he sees the guy is getting nuttier and nuttier, and he shows up with two children several times, and yet, he does nothing. It is our fault as a society that this went unsolved for so long. It really is. No one looks out for anyone else anymore.

  • witzah

Still on cell – reread article posted just before mine, & you’re right, No Whining – no reference to 4 year olds.

Thanks for the quote, Solange, that is what I read that sparked my recall from an earlier article I’d read quoting a neighbor that spoke of two toddlers, one quoted as about 4.

I’m going to have to search for it – perhaps I took it out of context (was an old observation of the now 11 & 15 yo?) but I’m sure I read it somewhere. I’m on a mission now!

  • witzah

My 2 cents on why she didn’t leave:

    Initially, she’s 11 & easily physically controlled

Throughout captivity she’s isolated in backyard – no TV or news

During initial yrs in captivity (& throughout), no doubt this sicko fed her mind with twisted mistruths

She’s pregnant & a mom BY 14, still easily physically controlled

Everyones asking – what about later? When she got older?

Well, take away the parents & the police & what would you expect a single mother of 2 without any schooling do to care for themselves if they left?

Undoubtedly, jerk-sicko told her statute of limitations on kidnapping had expired so police wouldn’t help her. So, why would she consider going to cops for help if she thought they wouldn’t/couldn’t help?

Surely he also fed her shit about her family not looking for her, not wanting her – which she may have questioned – but after so many years & after such isolation & extremism – I’m sure she began to wonder if they’d just moved on. Whether they’d still care as much for her to come home as she would need – and whether the time involved would have whithered their love enough not only to tak her back but to take 2 other kids they knew nothing about.

And how would she even find them? Or get to them? Assuming she could get out of compound safely? No money, no transportation – she can’t get a job – but she has three mouths to support.

Meantime, staying with the Garridos gives her & her kids guaranteed food, shelter & clothing.

I am not saying this is Stockholm Syndrome, but a calculated balancing of her options that she may have observed with the help of an RSO & sick man to help skew some of those options.

I can understand why, in that scenario, why staying might seem safer.

  • NoWhining

I can understand why, in that scenario, why staying might seem safer

I didn’t blockquote your whole post, witzah, but you’re absolutely right. I don’t blame her for not trying to escape. She was only 11 years old and I’m sure he completely brainwashed her. This brings to mind Steven Staynor. He was 7 years old when taken but his captor systematically brainwashed him – telling him his family didn’t want him and were not looking for him. He began to believe it rather quickly.

I’m with you on this one. I can totally see why she didn’t try to escape – ESPECIALLY having the two kids.

There has been so much written on this and in one article, I recall reading that Garrido had helped a neighor jump start her car one day; one of the little girls was “unusually” clinging to him. The girl told the neighbor that she had “two sisters and one of them was 28.”

I wonder if they were raised to believe that Jaycee was their sister and not their mother?

  • Taz

One article I read said he met Nancy while he was in prison, she was a daughter or friend or something of another inmate, They wrote letters and carried on then got hitched in the prison.

Also about that crazy interview Garrido gave, he is off his rocker, in La La Land, he claims he invented a box to talk to God Or angels or what ever. He spent his days talking to it and it told him all kinds of messages. Yeah right and so did Sam’s fucking dog.

His wife, Nancy Garrido, 54, was also arrested, and authorities have alleged she was with Mr Garrido during the kidnapping in South Lake Tahoe.

According to investigators Mr Garrido allegedly raped Ms Dugard and fathered two children with her, the first when Jaycee was about 14. Along with Ms Dugard, who is now 29, the children, both girls now 11 and 15, were also kept hidden away from the world in the backyard compound of the Garrido house in California.

nn his interview with KCRA -TV Mr Garrido also claimed that he left important documents that would reveal key information about the case with an agent at the FBI office in San Francisco.

“What’s kept me busy the last several years is I’ve completely turned my life around,” Mr Garrido said. “And you’re going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim – you wait. If you take this a step at a time, you’re going to fall over backwards and in the end, you’re going to find the most powerful heart-warming story.”

It was also reported that Mr Garrido held religious services in a tent in his garden and had recently claimed to have invented a device that would allow him to control sound with his mind.

To state the obvious she (and her kids) have been through hell – there’s no doubt about that – but the human spirit is (can be) resilient and as long as there’s life there’s hope.

So if I were in the parent’s shoes I’d be rejoicing – and making plans for long term care – god knows those kids couldn’t have gotten much of an education from that poor child, who literally had no more than a 5th grade education herself, and as for their helath they haven’t so much as seen a dentist.

Still as a parent – I’d definitely choose this lot in place of the alternative.

I too find myself shocked every time we hear how these kidnapped children dont leave and try to escape, no matter how many opportunities they had. One thing is clear to me though, now more than ever. There is a valid reason. Look at how many of them there are, we have Shawn Hornbeck, Steven Staynor, Elizabeth Smart, and now Jaycee Dugard. There is no way that there is something wrong with ALL these children. I remember people saying that maybe Shawn Hornbeck stayed because he liked not going to school or something like that. Bullshit. I wish there was more we could do to prepare our children so that in the event something like this happens, they can somehow overcome whatever it is mentally that causes them to stay with their captors. I remember reading somewhere how children are so dependent on grownups for food and shelter, that they tend to latch on and obey whomever it is that is giving it to them at that time, no matter who it is or how much abuse goes along with it.

I agree wholeheartedly. Not everyone has it in them to recover from something like this, but an astounding number of us DO. Westerners, especially Americans, are so risk adverse and coddled from trauma that I believe we’ve forgotten just how resilient we are.

It would be a terrible burden to deal with the trauma that undoubtedly exists and will continue to exist for some time but, it is a burden I’d like to believe I’d be enthusiastic about the chance to tackle.

I agree completely Solange (that it’s bullshit). Understand that these are kids – not ‘street kids’- KIDS. They generally respect authority and accept their circumstances – and probably feel they did something to ‘deserve’ whatever befalls them.

(CNN) — Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy met while he was in a federal prison serving time for abducting a different woman from South Lake Tahoe, California, and holding her captive in a storage unit, Nevada probation and parole officials said Friday.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido face 29 felony charges relating to the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Durgan.

1 of 2 Details of Phillip Garrido’s past began to emerge after he and his wife were charged with crimes relating to the abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and her captivity in a shed in the family’s backyard in Antioch, California. Phillip Garrido, 58, and Nancy Garrido, 54, face 29 felony charges relating to Dugard’s kidnapping.

Garrido’s record as a sex offender began with an arrest in Reno, Nevada, on November 23, 1976, on charges of kidnapping and rape of a South Lake Tahoe woman, the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Division of Parole and Probation said in a press release.

Garrido, then 25 years old, abducted a 25-year-old casino worker and took her to Reno, Nevada, where he held her captive.

After being convicted of federal kidnapping charges on March 9, 1977, Garrido began serving a 50-year sentence on June 30, 1977, in Levenworth, Kansas.

Parole officials said he met Nancy while he was in prison, but they didn’t give details.

But Garrido’s life began to spiral out of control in high school, his father, Manuel Garrido, told CNN.

“He had a motorcycle accident and got on LSD and he’s not in his right mind,” Manuel Garrido said. “He was in a bad accident and hit his head and then got on LSD in high school. That was the end. He went to selling dope. He went crazy.”

Though he hasn’t spoken to his son for 20 years because they “didn’t get along” and has never been to the home where his son his accused of holding Dugard, Manuel Garrido said he wasn’t surprised to hear about accusations.

“I wasn’t surprised because I know he’s out of his head for God’s sakes,” he said. “He was an angel when he was young and it’s a damn shame.” Learn about some missing children who have been found alive »

Phillip Garrido’s father also said his son believes “he talks to God and he can do things.”

And Garrido apparently maintained a blog where he discussed talking to God and also claimed he could control sound with his mind.http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/08/28/california.missing.girl.blog/index.html

Meanwhile, cops combed their home in Antioch, California, for clues to the unsolved hooker killings in the early 1990s. The bodies of several vice girls were dumped on land near where Garrido worked.

Probyn said the most surprising thing to Terry Probyn was that Jaycee looks very young, almost like she did when she taken.

Probyn also said Dugard felt terribly guilty for bonding with her captor, and her family felt troubled by learning the facts of how she was forced to live for 18 years.

Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee confirmed the pending search. Several women’s bodies were found dumped near a Pittsburg industrial park where Garrido worked in the 1990s.

Finally at my laptop. Found my sites.

Regarding the two four year old girls – they exist, and I still want to know who they are:

Pieces of this 18-year-old puzzle are finally coming together. But one thing that Pratt said to the Chronicle remains unexplained:

Pratt said people came and went from the property, but the core group consisted of two girls about 4 years old, one girl about 11, another girl about 15 and a young woman about 25. They were all blond, she said.

The woman and the two girls, aged 11 and 15, are presumably Dugard and her two recovered daughters. But who are the two four-year-old girls? And where are they?

Regarding 2006′s 911 Call That Was Improperly Responded To & Could’ve Saved The Women Sooner:

MARTINEZ, Calif. — As anger rose over how law enforcement missed the chance to rescue Jaycee Lee Dugard for 18 years as she was held captive by a paroled rapist, the Contra Costa County sheriff issued an extraordinary apology Friday for missing an opportunity in 2006 to save her.

Sheriff Warren Rupf said Friday that a neighbor tipped authorities Nov. 30, 2006, that young children were living in squalor in suspect Phillip Garrido’s backyard outside Antioch.

The deputy went to the house but did not ask to look in the backyard and concluded that at most, the situation was a code violation, Rupf said.

“We are beating ourselves up over this,” the sheriff said at a press conference in Martinez, near Antioch. “I’m first in line to offer organizational criticism, offer my apologies to the victims and accept responsibility for having missed an earlier opportunity to rescue Jaycee. There’s absolutely no excuse.”

Police apologize for not heeding 911 call on secret compound
    Detroit News wire services

Antioch, Calif. — Neighbors knew he was a registered sex offender, a young neighbor talked to a girl in his backyard, a sheriff’s deputy questioned him after a 911 call and probation officers repeatedly checked on him.

But for 18 years, Phillip Garrido managed to elude detection as he pulled off what authorities are calling an unfathomable crime, kidnapping 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard, keeping her as his secret sex slave for nearly two decades and fathering her two children.

On Friday, Sheriff Warren Rupf apologized “for having missed an earlier opportunity to rescue Jaycee.”

Garrido Being Investigated as Serial Killer

Suspect in abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard being investigated as serial killer

Police who are still very actively working on putting all the pieces together in the abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard, 18 years ago when she was just 11-years-old, are expanding their investigation against the main suspect. Apparently Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender who was somehow underestimated as harmless is now being investigated in the serial killings of 10 prostitutes in the late 1990s near where he Garrido lived and worked. Law enforcement conducted a new search today of the home Garrido 58, and his wife, Nancy Garrido, where police say they held Jaycee Lee Dugard and the two daughters she had by Garrido, captive for 18 years.

Law enforcement are just starting to take heat for possible missed opportunities to solve this case sooner. One known missed opportunity involved an unnamed deputy who was dispatched to the Garridos’ home in 1996 after a 911 caller reported that a “psychotic” Garrido had sexual addictions and erected tents in his back yard where children were living, Rupf said. Instead of investigating, the deputy warned Garrido that the tents could be a code violation, and never checked out the shabby hovels where the psycho suspect was holding Jaycee and the daughters Garrido fathered with his captive.

Accused Calif. kidnapper a serial killer?

ANTIOCH, Calif., Aug. 28 (UPI) — Police confirmed the California man suspected of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 is being investigated in a series of prostitute slayings.

Detectives from the Bay Area city of Pittsburg Friday searched the Antioch home of Phillip Garrido for any evidence linking him to the deaths of 10 women whose bodies were found in the late 1990s in an area where Garrido reportedly was employed, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Capt. Daniel Terry of the Contra Costa County sheriff’s office told the newspaper Pittsburg investigators executed a search warrant at the home where Garrido, a convicted sex offender, allegedly held Dugard captive for 18 years.

Jaycee Dugard stopped thinking of Phillip Garrido as her kidnapper and saw him more as a husband, her stepfather said Friday.

Even though she was raped within a month of the kidnapping, according to court records, and secretly housed in a backyard shed, Dugard, then 11 and now 29, apparently never told her two children she was kidnapped. When she greeted her mother at a tearful reunion this week, her first words were “Hi, Mom, I have babies.”

Authorities do not yet know if Dugard considered trying to escape during the years she and her children, now 11 and 15, lived in squalid conditions in a “hidden” backyard at Garrido’s home, fenced off from the yard immediately behind the house.

They do know that Dugard met with customers of Garrido’s printing business, greeting them as “Allissa.” Garrido previously had said the woman was his daughter, according to Ben Daughdrill, who had hired Garrido to do a printing job. Daughdrill told the New York Times “Allissa” was “the design person, she did the art work, she was the genius.” When she was reunited with her mother at a Bay Area hotel, Dugard “expressed some regret, like guilt when she saw her mother, that she hadn’t escaped,” her stepfather said.

“She is feeling guilt for having bonded with this guy the way she did,” Probyn said. “He had her for 18 years, we had her for 11.”

    http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_13227420?source=most_emailed
The girl’s name Allissa \a(l)-lissa, all(is)-sa\ is a variant of Alice (Old German), Alisa (Hebrew), Alyssa (Greek) and Elissa (Greek), and the meaning of Allissa is “noble, exalted; great happiness; rational; from the blessed isles”.

Prayers for Jaycee and family! It is a miracle that Jaycee and children are alive, but, it will be a long and winding road from here on! Jaycee must be a strong willed and intelligent woman! I know she and her children will, eventually, be at peace with their lives!
Maybe, Garridos “god in a box” will call him to come home!

Officer Ally Jacobs sat in on a meeting with Mr Garrido and his daughters after he requested permission to distribute leaflets on the Berkeley campus of the University of California.

She said Mr Garrido arrived with the girls, aged 11 and 15, who stared at their father “like God” during the meeting. “They had this weird look in their eyes, like brainwashed zombies,” she said.

Dear god. I just read about the neighbor who DID alert the police in 2006. Three fucking years ago this could have ended. How could the cops not demand to see the children and women that neighbors had reported??? Why do cops have to be so lazy and stupid????????

  • solange822001

The concept is sometimes refereed to as minding your own business, a concept that is foreign to the liberal mind. Even less likely to be found in a liberal woman’s mind. :)

You opened the door Solange, I just walked through it.

Come on Harley, one thing is minding your own business, but let me ask you, how far does that go to you? If you see a child being hit, you aren’t going to report it because you should “mind your own business”? If this neighbor hadn’t had that mindset, another less idiotic cop may have shown up and actually found Jaycee and the children a long time ago. If being “liberal” means saving the life of a child or person in danger, then maybe we should all be liberal. Not that I think politics has anything to do with being a good citizen, I would think regardless of what your ideology is it should be considered ok to report a child that may be in danger. Maybe Im wrong, but I believe you would have done it Harley, if you heard children playing in a hidden backyard, seemingly living in tents?

Love these large photos, I am astounded by the nastiness and pure junk in all these yards.

I am also disappointed in Jaycee, in so many ways…

If I had all that time on my hands that area of the yard would of been kept up nice and homey, how disgusting. Not to mention the memories of life before… 11 is pretty old you know the name of your school and phone # home, mom and dad’s work – even if being locked in a shed for years at the first opportunity I would jumped fence, started carving, digging my way out, eveb started a fire something to get attention. I don’t care what they had told me – seems like you would know in your heart your mom, grandma, sister, step dad were scared shitless. By age 11 your well aware of the situations like these (my niece is 8 and she knew this stuff from like age 5 or 6 – pretty sure of it). “Stranger Danger” “Foster Care” beats being raped – pregnant or not…

One plus in all of this. When Jaycee is ready she can receive state government help, entitled to Social Security for the kids welfare food stamps section 8 – She is entitled to have her house / apartment where ever she wishes to live.

I’ve been thinking, don’t he have to serve the other almost 40 years he didnt serve on the old conviction, by then he be dead so what did he have to loose by killing whores and kidnapping children. absolutely nothing.

    @ Wonder

I think you are asking an awful lot of an 11-yo. I, on the other hand, would have only asked of the adults in this story that they not abduct a child. Most of them managed to abstain. If only every single one of them could have. That would have solved all the problems……

Still cannot get over the horrible, horrible fate of Mr Probyn who has lived under the shadow of suspicion for decades, whose marriage was broken up under the strain of it, and who is now finally vindicated.

  • solange822001

Wonder, we all think we would do that. But there is a difference: none of us have actually HAD to do it. This happens to too many children in this situation, it’s naive to assume that they are all stupid or something is wrong with them. They may not always have a physical cage locking them in, but you can best believe they have a “psychological cage” trapping them there. These perverts know what they are doing, they know how to manipulate the mind of a child and prey on their insecurities and fears. Who knows what this bastard was telling her to keep her close? Maybe he said he would kill her parents and sister if she escaped? Maybe by the time she had a chance to escape she was so embarrassed that she had had a baby at 14 and she thought her parents would blame her? You have a child against an experienced predator, you cannot expect the child to win. Which is exactly why we as a society need to keep our eyes and ears open so we can help these children beat the odds, even if it means not “minding your own business”.

  • solange822001

Damn, Im so stupid! Why didnt I think of this before!? Instead of meeting men in bars and clubs, I should be trying the local prisons! Silly me…

Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy met while he was in a federal prison serving time for abducting a different woman from South Lake Tahoe, California, and holding her captive in a storage unit, Nevada probation and parole officials said Friday.

  • nobigwhoopdawg

You have to understand that the girl was scared shitless by this crazy man and his disgusting wife. They probably kept her pretty much immobilized for the first year. After that, they watched her, continuously bombarding her with propaganda about God’s work through Phillip and the direct line to the Lord and how Phillip can do things with his mind, and he’s watching, always watching, and God (being omnipresent and all) would tell Phillip if Jaycee (“Alissa”) stepped out of line. Also, being under “God’s” protection, the fact that no one found her was probably presented as proof that she was exactly where she needed to be.

As far as cleaning up the yard? They probably didn’t let her stay out long enough for that, and why would they? It’d draw attention to the situation. The only reason they took her places later on was because they needed her help propagandizing UCB, and they figured it had been long enough that no one would recognize her. Besides that, she needed her energy to stay alive, and later, to make sure her babies lived.

  • Dr.Keegee

    Wonder:
Your statement makes my heart ache – I hope this youngster is given wide latitude by everyone – heaven knows she deserves it – she already is apparently feeling guilt for her lack of effort in escape. Please don’t be so disappointed – we all can *imagine* what we or our kids would do – but… I wonder.

It might be worthwhile to remember she was held captive for 18 years. Finally – consider this:

...After four days, McCain made an anti-American propaganda "confession".[33] He has always felt that his statement was dishonorable, but as he later wrote, "I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine."[46][47] Many American POWs were tortured and maltreated in order to extract "confessions" and propaganda statements, with many enduring even longer and worse treatment;[48] virtually all of them eventually yielded something to their captors...[

Wonder, first of all, it’s always easy for us to sit in our glass houses and cast stones at others. You have no CLUE what Jaycee went through during the last 18yrs of her life. Until we know all of the facts, no one has the right to judge her actions. Least of all someone who has never been in her shoes. I can’t even wrap my mind around what she’s been through, let alone trying to think of how she “should” feel, and what she “should have” done.

I hope that her mother and step-dad are receiving plenty of counseling as well as Jaycee and her children. God only knows what’s going to happen there.. May God bless all of them.

Dugard, now 29, was reunited with her mother, sister and another relative Thursday. She is said to be in good health, but feeling guilty about developing a bond with Garrido, said her stepfather Carl Probyn. Her two children, 11 and 15, remain with her.

“Jaycee has strong feelings with this guy. She really feels it’s almost like a marriage,” said Probyn, who was there when little Jaycee was snatched from a bus stop in 1991 and has been in contact with her mother since they found out the girl was alive.

“Hi, mom, I have babies,” was Dugard’s first words to her mother when they were reunited Thursday, Probyn said, adding it appears she never told them she was kidnapped by their father.

I’m a worrier, and I always teach my kids not to speak to strangers, and not to go with strangers. I taught them all that if a stranger ever tries to get them to go with them against their will to scream at the top of their lungs “you are not my mommy or daddy!” over and over from when they were toddlers. I also use the password system (no one ever is allowed to come and get you, no matter who it is or what they tell you – EVER – unless they know the password)

I always remind the family about the dangers, and make the little one remind me what he says if a stranger tries to make him go with him.

This case has given me a new perspective on how to teach our kids about stranger danger, or danger, in general. Today as I was getting into the car with the kids, I said something different. I told them that no matter what happens in life, mommy & daddy always love them and always want to be with them. Their jobs as kids is to want to be with mommy & daddy, too. I said this in words most familiar for a toddler – but if a stranger ever tries to take you, not only do you scream “you’re not my mommy or my daddy” but you do everything you can to get back to mommy & daddy because that’s your job (that’s a phrase the little guy understands & appreciates, he he). We will love you forever, no matter what, no matter how long, and will always love you. (Tried not to be morbid, and be any more specific about this . . . not sure the little ones are quite ready for all the crimes out there they need protecting from, let alone capable of processing it . . .)

Christ, the world just keeps on getting darker and darker, doesn’t it? Just when I feel like I’ve learned how to best try and respond to the newest & sickest threat and perversion, I realize how futile it might all be when another thing hits like this.

On that note, this has certainly been uplifting for the other parents of children gone without a trace for many years without any closure. I’ve long wondered about many of the kids still listed on the NCMEC, like Wetterling. Who doesn’t have that cute boy’s smiling face plastered in memory? Sometimes those age progressions to 10, 20, 30 years out seem so silly – but this week we’ve learned that they are anything but. Not all missing kids cases that go past 48-72 hours and are stranger abductions do fit the statistics. My mind simply can’t process this shit.

One thing I haven’t seen answered is this: do her 2 kids KNOW she is their mother? I know that Jaycee didn’t tell her that she was kidnapped, and I know that they know Garrido was their father – but I also thought that they were under the belief that Jaycee was their sister. So, if they didn’t know she was their mother, that’s another twist here – suddenly their sister is taking them out of home to ANOTHER home, presenting them to a woman claiming that she’s their mother and this strange woman is their grandmother? What another angle of overload for them to process . . . geez!! I really hope they knew Jaycee was their mom!

And Wonder – regarding Jaycee not escaping – after a few years of being physically restrained in the shed with the lock from the outside, when she’s only a young pre-teen, she’s suddenly a mom who needs to protect her kid(s). By then, Garrido’s gonna not only tell her the parents don’t care – but he’s gonna tell her the statute of limitations has run and the police can’t help or won’t help so she’s got no options if she even tried to leave his fortress. So why would she? No money, no food, no ways of supporting herself or her kids without any education or any remote clue of the real world, and a misguided belief that the police and family won’t or can’t help. So, she’ll be doing it herself basically – starting from scratch. She’ll go to a woman’s shelter at best, but how’s she gonna get there without transportation? That’s if she can get out without arousing suspicion in the house, which would then put her and the kids at risk of physical retaliation. OR . . . should she just suck it up, deal with the shitty hand that was dealt to her, but continue to have food, shelter, and “stability” for her and her daughters? It’s really a no brainer when analyzed under those skewed circumstances.

Focus in Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping turns to wife of Garrido

Nancy Garrido is charged in California with ‘forcible rape’ of abducted girl
Nancy Garrido, the wife of Phillip Garrido, the man charged with the kidnapping and rape of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in a case that has stunned America, played an equal role in his alleged crimes, according to a 16-page charge sheet filed in California by US prosecutors.

As Dugard’s step-grandmother told how Jaycee Lee, now 29, who had been missing for 18 years, was “doing good”, attention switched from Garrido to the role allegedly played by his wife. According to the charge sheet against her, Nancy Garrido is accused along with her husband of kidnapping Dugard “for sexual purposes”.

Prosecutors accuse Nancy Garrido of “forcible rape”, committing a “forcible lewd act upon a child” and of “false imprisonment by violence”. They allege she “did unlawfully have and accomplish an act of sexual intercourse with a person, to wit, Jane Doe (the alleged victim), not his/her spouse, against said person’s will, by means of force, violence, duress, menace and fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury on said person and another”.

In total, Nancy Garrido faces 16 charges dating from 10 June 1991 – the day Dugard was abducted – to 26 August 2009, the day she reappeared in public.

The allegations raise questions about the relationship between the Garridos, who were married while Phillip was serving a prison term for kidnapping and raping a 25-year-old woman in California.

Garrido had admitted to being the father of Dugard’s two children, now aged 11 and 15, but on Friday he and his wife denied all charges brought against them in relation to the now notorious kidnapping.

Dugard’s step-grandmother, Wilma Probyn, told People magazine in the US that she had spoken to the missing woman’s mother, Terry, last night. “She said Jaycee was doing good, that she’s got a lot of guilt, that she bonded with this guy. But after I’ve heard all these things, I think that’s the only reason she’s alive, because she did bond with him,” Probyn said.

Questions have been raised as to why Garrido, who in 1977 was sentenced to 50 years for the kidnap and rape conviction, was granted parole in 1988. Politicians and law enforcement officials expressed surprise at the relatively short length of time Garrido had served considering the severity of his sentence.

Meanwhile police have named Phillip Garrido as a “person of interest” in their investigation into the unsolved murders of several prostitutes in the 1990s. The women’s bodies had been dumped near an industrial park where Garrido once worked, according to police investigators.

    Theres 2 more kids??

Pratt said that people came and went from the property, but the core group consisted of two girls about four years old, one girl about 11, another girl about 15 and a young woman about 25. They were all blonde, she said.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/28/jaycee-lee-dugard-kidnap-suspect-garrido-speaks A world of nightmare: Jaycee Lee Dugard’s story::

Garrido, it emerged, was a man who had spent most of the 1970s tripping on LSD, bingeing on cocaine and smoking pot, before his drug-addled orgy was ended by an 11-year prison stretch for kidnapping and raping a woman in a storage unit he had converted into a “sex palace”, with sex aids, hardcore pornographic magazines and stage lights.

Imprisoned in a “backyard within a backyard” at the Garridos’ home, Jaycee was reported to have become so accustomed to the life she was forced lead that she helped run her kidnappers’ printing business. She was described as being a “front” for the company, which was run from the Garridos’ home, even to the extent of dealing with clients in person, and by phone and email.

    Timeline

1973 Garrido’s first marriage ends in divorce. His wife blames his excessive drug use.

1976 High on acid, Garrido kidnaps and rapes a 25-year-old woman in Reno, Nevada.

1977 Garrido is jailed for life for the attack. Marries Nancy, a prison visitor, while in jail.

1988 Garrido is given early release.

10 June 1991 Jaycee Lee Dugard is snatched from school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe and taken 170 miles away to the Garrido’s home.

    1993 Jaycee’s daughter is born.

    1997 Second daughter is born.

1999 Paramedics make the first of five visits to the house, to attend to Garrido’s 88-year-old mother.

2006 Neighbour complains to police about children living in Garrido’s back yard. Police attend, but do not search the property.

July 2008 Officers checking on sex offenders visit the house.

24 August 2009 Garrido asks University of California for permission to distribute religious leaflets on campus.

25 August Campus police officer is suspicious of Garrido’s “zombie-like” daughters and calls his parole officer.

    26 August Garrido arrested.

29 August He and Nancy plead not guilty to rape and kidnap.

God Bless you Jaycee, God Bless!

Considering that her abductor is a RSO who’s also served time for kidnapping, is suspected of being a multiple murderer, has a past history of drug abuse, and is a delusional religious fanatic…
IMO, Jaycee did everything and more that any 11 year old child could possibly do to survive, both physically and mentally, from such a horrendous nightmare of abuse and imprisonment that lasted for 19 years.

Had she fought and resisted at every chance, or tried to escape, she likely would have been viewed as a risk by her captors, and probably killed.

At age 11, she was abducted; held captive in a 10′ by 10′ shed; repeatedly raped; impregnated and giving birth twice in that same shed; subjected to her abductor’s manipulations, ravings, threats and delusions; enduring her situation for nineteen years.
Initially, she probably didn’t know exactly where she was, didn’t have access to a telephone or transportation, and couldn’t drive a car.

Yet, she remembered who she was, she survived and kept her children alive, reasonably healthy, with enough sanity intact to tell someone who she was, and what had happened when she was questioned away from her captors, while her children were near and safe.

Her indominatable spirit allowed her to beat the odds, where many others have not, making her a very amazing young woman, IMO.

Antioch, Calif. — Neighbors knew he was a registered sex offender, a young neighbor talked to a girl in his backyard, a sheriff’s deputy questioned him after a 911 call and probation officers repeatedly checked on him.

I hope the neighbors who knew he was a a sex offender weren’t the same ones who thought they should “mind their own business” in regards to children living in tents. That is crimimal and sick if you have all that knowledge and do not report it. If I were Jaycee’s mother that motherfucker would be payed a nice surprise visit….

E-mails show kidnap victim worked at suspect’s business ANTIOCH, California (CNN) —

Customers of the printing company knew her as “Allissa.”

Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped at 11 and kept hidden for 18 years in a backyard compound, authorities say.

They spoke to her about graphic design, business cards and fliers, and describe her as professional, polite and responsive.

“She was always good at getting us what we wanted,” said Ben Daughdrill, who used to own a junk hauling business. “You got the feeling she was doing all the work.”

But “Allissa,” authorities say, was really Jaycee Dugard, kidnapped 18 years ago from her home in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Her identity was discovered earlier this week and her alleged kidnappers — 58-year-old Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, and his 55-year-old wife Nancy — were arrested.

Garrido, 58, has been named by detectives as a “person of interest” in up to 10 unsolved murders going back nearly 20 years in and around his home town of Antioch, California. He lived two doors away from an elderly relative of Lisa Norrell, a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was strangled in November, 1998.
Garrido looked after the house next door as a caretaker until 2006 and detectives were searching for clothing or belongings of the 10 murdered women, most of whom were prostitutes.

Sheriff: Bone fragment found near Garrido home ‘probably human’,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bone fragment found near the California home where Jaycee Dugard is said to have been confined for 18 years is “probably human,” a sheriff’s spokesman said Tuesday.
Jaycee Dugard was locked in a shed tucked under a blue tarp in her alleged captor’s backyard.

Investigators said they found the bone last week on a neighbor’s property in an area that Dugard’s accused captor and rapist, Philip Garrido, had access to.

The fragment, which was analyzed by an outside expert, will go on to the state DNA lab for testing, Jimmy Lee, director of Public Affairs for the Contra Costa County’s Sheriff’s Office said in an e-mail.

“The expert has determined that the bone fragment found in the backyard of Garrido’s neighbor is probably human,” Lee said.

“We will be requesting the state to see if it can develop a DNA profile on the fragment. It should be noted that it is not uncommon to find Native American remains in Contra Costa County,” he said.

Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have pleaded not guilty to 29 felony charges, including rape and kidnapping, stemming from Dugard’s disappearance when she was 11 years old.

Investigators believe Garrido kidnapped Dugard in 1991 in South Lake Tahoe, California, fathered two daughters with her and held her captive in a well-hidden compound behind his home in Antioch.

After the Garridos were arrested in August, investigators used cadaver dogs to search the couple’s ramshackle home and the surrounding rural property for possible connections to unsolved crimes.

Police in Hayward, California, are trying to determine whether Garrido is linked to the 1988 kidnapping of Michaela Garecht, Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said last week.

Garecht and Dugard were of similar age and appearance, both were abducted in daylight and a sketch of a suspect resembled Garrido, Orrey said.

In Dublin, California, investigators said last week they were looking into whether Garrido was connected to the 1989 disappearance of Ilene Misheloff, who was 13 when she was abducted.

Bail for Phillip Garrido, a sex offender accused of abducting and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard, was set Monday at $30 million.

Whew that’s LARGE! But, really, why bother? Phillip is on parole hold, anyway!!

Phillip Garrido appeared in court with a bandage on his nose and a newly grown beard.

I’m thinking that “black” growth on the side of his nose is the cancerous evil in him, breaking through his skin!

Nancy Garrido is being held without bail. Both are due back in court for an Oct. 29 hearing.

Before Monday’s hearing, Deputy District Attorney Trish Kelliher filed a declaration seeking higher bail for both suspects, citing the serious nature of the crimes and saying they should be considered flight risks.

She also said in her court filing that a stun gun was used to subdue the victim when she was kidnapped from a school bus stop in 1991.

The stun gun was probably used many more times to subdue Jaycee!

Police: Bones found on Garrido property ANTIOCH, California (CNN) —

Investigators have found bones on the property where kidnapping suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido lived for 18 years with Jaycee Dugard and her two daughters, police said Wednesday.

Police search for evidence relating to missing girls Ilene Misheloff and Michaela Garecht.

More bones of undetermined origin also were found on property adjacent to the home, Lt. Chris Orrey of the Hayward Police Department said.

“We have located what appear to be bones on both properties,” Orrey told reporters. “We can’t tell at this point if those bones are human or animal.”

The evidence has been sent to a laboratory for analysis, Orrey said.

Hayward Police executed a search warrant Tuesday for the Garrido home and the neighboring property in connection with the 1988 abduction of Michaela Garecht, police said. Watch police search the Garrido home »

In addition, police in Dublin, California, obtained a search warrant for the same locations in their investigation of the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff, police said.

Both warrants were being executed simultaneously Tuesday, police said.

Garecht’s mother said Tuesday that she holds out hope that her daughter will be found alive.

“I know that if Jaycee Dugard can be found alive and come home after 18 years, then my daughter can be found alive and come home,” Sharon Murch told reporters at a news conference. Learn more about Phillip Garrido’s history »

The Garridos face a combined 29 felony counts in connection with the 1991 kidnapping of Dugard, then 11, from South Lake Tahoe, California.

Authorities believe the couple held Dugard in a well-hidden compound behind their home for 18 years and have said Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, fathered two children with Dugard. The Garridos live near Antioch, California, in unincorporated Contra Costa County, east of San Francisco.

Police from both agencies said that while Garrido has not been named a suspect in the other abductions, he cannot be eliminated as a suspect in either case. Neither police department has interviewed Dugard, police said.

Garecht was abducted by a stranger in front of a market in south Hayward on November 19, 1988, according to Murch’s Web site on her missing daughter, MissingMichaela.com. Over the past two decades, police have followed some 13,000 tips in investigating her disappearance, Orrey said.

Dugard’s abduction, rescue bring town full circle
She said Hayward police have also noted similarities between the Garecht and Dugard cases. The victims were similar in age and appearance, Orrey said, and both were abducted in daylight, in a “brazen” manner.

The suspect vehicle in the Garecht case is also similar to the sedan found on the Garrido property, she added, and in pictures from that time, Garrido appears to resemble a sketch of a suspect based on a witness description.

Murch said she also noticed the similarities in their cases and thought it could lead to finding her daughter.

“My first thought when I heard Jaycee was found was please, God, let Michaela be with her,” Murch said.

Misheloff failed to make it home from school on January 30, 1989, Dublin Police Lt. Kurt von Savoye said.

“For 20 years, we have been attempting to determine what happened.” There is no eyewitness that could say with certainty she was abducted, and evidence in the case was limited, he said.

A witness did report seeing Misheloff getting into a vehicle, a sedan similar to one found on the Garrido property, at the time of her disappearance, von Savoye said. Garrido “has demonstrated a propensity to abduct young girls,” police said in a statement, and he was released from prison a few months before Misheloff disappeared. Dublin is about 40 miles from Antioch.

Misheloff’s family is aware of the search warrant execution but are out of town on a family emergency, von Savoye said.

In the property search, there are no current plans in place to raze structures, Orrey said, but “we are very interested in what might be behind walls, under flooring, under the ground.” Authorities are prepared to disassemble structures if needed, she said.

Jaycee Dugard will be reunited with her pets,,,,,People.com)

    – Jaycee Dugard and her daughters are preparing for another happy homecoming: with their animals.
Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped at 11 and kept hidden for 18 years in a backyard compound, authorities say.

Pets removed from Phillip Garrido’s house after his August 26 arrest on kidnapping and rape charges include five cats, two dogs, three cockatiels, a pigeon, white mice and a parakeet.

Animal control officials said that only one of the mice is still alive — but other than that, the pets remain in good health, and Jaycee, 29, Starlit, 15, and Angel, 11, are anxious to get them back.

“We’ve been going the extra mile, socializing with the cats and taking the dogs for walks. They are all very friendly animals, and you can tell they were well-cared for and never tormented,” said Lt. Nancy Anderson of the Contra Costa County animal shelter.

“There was never a question of them going up for adoption unless (Jaycee) indicated she didn’t want them back,” Anderson said. “But that’s not the case. I think there’s going to be another happy reunion for the family.”

One of the dogs is a Rottweiler mix and the other is a Labrador mix, Anderson said. The cats are described only as basic, shorthaired and very sweet housecats. The pigeon and mouse were caged.

Anderson said a liaison for Jaycee has made it clear she and the girls want the pets back soon, but it was unclear exactly when the reunion would happen.

Jaycee, her daughters, and her mother are with counselors in an undisclosed location in El Dorado County, which is prosecuting the Garridos

Cadaver dogs alert on Garrido property
    ANTIOCH, California (CNN) —

Two cadaver dogs working separately each showed interest in the same area of property belonging to kidnapping suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido, a possible indication of human remains, police said Thursday.

Police search for evidence relating to missing girls Ilene Misheloff and Michaela Garecht.

Authorities will use ground-penetrating radar equipment on Friday to examine the area, and “we will eventually be digging in that location,” said Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey.

The Garridos face a combined 29 felony counts in the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard, then 11, from South Lake Tahoe, California. Authorities believe the couple held Dugard in a hidden compound behind their home for 18 years and have said Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, fathered her two children.

On Tuesday, police from Hayward and Dublin, California, began executing search warrants simultaneously on the Garrido property and an adjacent property to which Garrido had access.

They are seeking any evidence in the 1988 abduction of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht of Hayward and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff of Dublin. Both agencies have said that while Garrido has not been named a suspect in either case, he cannot be eliminated as a suspect. Watch police search the Garrido home »

On Wednesday, authorities said they had found bones on the Garrido property as well as the adjacent property but do not know whether they are animal or human. The bones are being analyzed, Orrey said on Thursday, and no new information was available about them.

In addition, a bone fragment was found on the adjacent property last week. Police said it was probably human, and it is being tested at the state DNA lab.

Police said the spot that the dogs showed interest in was in “open ground” on the Garrido property. The first dog gave a tentative indication of something there, so the second dog was brought in and made a more definite indication, said Sgt. J.D. Nelson of Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. The dogs, which undergo between six months and a year of training, are trained to find human remains.
It is possible for the dogs to give “false positives,” Nelson said — a reason why the second dog was brought in. However, since both dogs showed interest, going forward with the other methods is recommended, he said.

Orrey said the digging could begin as soon as Friday, but was not sure when it would occur.

Police have disassembled some horse sheds and a deck on the properties, Orrey said, and plan to overturn the concrete slabs they were built on in order to have the dogs check the spots out. There are other slabs on the property as well, she said, some of which are “randomly placed” and “piqued our interest,” she said.

Authorities have seized documents from the home, apparently some writings by Garrido — “it appears he was a pretty prolific writer,” Orrey said. Learn more about Phillip Garrido’s history »

Police also have taken some things for Jaycee and her family, and “a few things we want to take a second look at,” she said, adding, “nothing compelling so far has been taken.” Officers are “doing a lot of photo-documentation” in case anything turns out to be connected to another case, she said.

The operation may wrap up midweek next week, Orrey said. The home is in unincorporated Contra Costa County, near Antioch, California.

Meanwhile, officials at Contra Costa County Animal Services Department said Dugard and her daughters will be reunited with pets taken from the Garrido home after he and his wife were arrested in late August — five cats, two dogs, three cockatiels, a pigeon, a white mouse and a parakeet.

Officials said the animals appeared to be well cared-for. It was unclear when Dugard would get them back.

Officials: Another bone found on kidnapping suspects’ property

    ANTIOCH, California (CNN)

    – Investigators found another bone on property belonging to kidnapping suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido on Friday, as they scoured the yard for possible clues to the abductions of two other girls about 20 years ago, officials said.

At an afternoon news conference, authorities revealed that the bone was discovered as crews broke up concrete on the property.

Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey said it will take time to determine whether the bone came from an animal or a human.

The search Friday at the property in unincorporated Contra Costa County involved the use of ground-penetrating radar, which showed irregularities in an area of the yard where cadaver dogs working separately showed interest Thursday, investigators said.
The Garridos face a combined 29 felony counts in connection with the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard, then 11, from South Lake Tahoe, California. Authorities say the couple held Dugard in a hidden compound behind their home for 18 years and have said Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, fathered her two children.

Police from Hayward and Dublin, California, on Tuesday began executing search warrants simultaneously on the Garrido property and an adjacent property that he had access to. They are seeking any evidence in the 1988 abduction of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht of Hayward and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff of Dublin.

Both agencies have said that, although Garrido has not been named a suspect in either case, he cannot be eliminated as a suspect.

Orrey said “boxes and boxes” of writings by Phillip Garrido were also recovered on the property and were being taken off-site so investigators “can look through every single page.”

Little work will be conducted at the site over the weekend, Orrey said, but investigators will remain on the property to ward off trespassers, who have been spotted there in the past few weeks.

When the search resumes Monday, two kinds of search dogs will be brought in, authorities said: cadaver dogs and archaeological dogs. Cadaver dogs detect decomposing matter, investigators said, and archaeological dogs search for older material.

Earlier Friday, Orrey said the dogs would not return to the area until after it was cleared of debris.

“We just want to have all of the areas clear so they can do another sweep of the entire properties,” she said.

Authorities also plan to continue searching the Garrido house, which county building inspectors have condemned as unsafe to occupy, Orrey said.
On Wednesday, authorities said they had found bones on both the Garrido property and the adjacent property but did not know whether they were animal or human.

    Jaycee Dugard Writing Memoir

Publisher Says Kidnap Victim’s Book Due Out Next Year
NEW YORK — Jaycee Dugard, who survived being kidnapped at age 11 and held captive for 18 years, is writing a memoir.

Simon & Schuster announced Monday Dugard’s book is scheduled to come out next year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

According to the publisher, the 30-year-old Dugard will write the currently untitled book herself and cover her life from her abduction in 1991 to how she is doing now.

Last week, a judge in California temporarily suspended criminal proceedings against Phillip Garrido, the man accused of kidnapping Dugard, citing worries about Garrido’s mental state. Garrido faces 29 counts of kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment in the disappearance of Dugard.

Judge Douglas Phimister said he’s seen behavior from Phillip Garrido several times in court that was troubling.

“When someone either wants to go to trial for crazy reasons, or not go to trial for crazy reasons, that person is not competent,” Susan Gellman, Garrido’s attorney, said Friday. “And that’s what we’re talking about.”

A preliminary hearing had been scheduled to start Oct. 7.
