, Ronald Bohannon, 29, was walking his 16-month old son in a stroller down a street in Midland. Bohannon said he heard gunshots, looked down and realized his baby boy, Travis, had just been shot in the head by a stray bullet. Little Travis Bohannon died at the hospital that day and several blocks in the town were closed by police. Officers from different departments in the county investigated the street where the shooting occurred. The officers were unsure if the shooting was accidental or intentional and, even though they were following several leads, they still had no suspects until…

Wednesday when officers arrested Bohannon on an outstanding warrant for receiving stolen property. While in custody, police said Bohannon made a statement implicating himself in the shooting. Police also found a gun in a wooded area near Bohannon’s mobile home and they believe it was the gun used in the shooting. Bohannon now faces the following charges:
- Reckless homicide, a class-C felony.
- Pointing a firearm, a class-D felony.
- PossessionPossession reviews of a handgun without a permit, a class-A misdemeanor.
- Possession of a handgun with a prior felony conviction within 15 years, a class-C felony.
- Receiving stolen property, a class-D felony.
- Obstruction of justice, a class-D felony.
- False informing, a class-A misdemeanor.
A class-C felony carries a prison term of 6-20 years, and a class-D felony carries a term of 18 months to 3 years in prison. Ronald Bohannon’s bond was originally set at $34,000 and has now been increased to $50,000 cash only, no 10 percent allowed. Bohannon’s trial date has been set for Jan. 26, 2010.
Update: Ronald Bohannon’s girlfriend, Tanya McIntyre, was arrested today and is now facing charges of false informing and obstruction of justice. McIntyre and Bohannon stuck with their story that Bohannon heard a pop, looked down in the stroller and saw Travis had been shot, but the tale was not consistent with the evidence. Early on, police found gun residue on the top of the stroller which indicated that the shot had been fired from close range. An autopsy helped determined where the shot came from and the distance of the shot. Police believe McIntyre threw the gun used in the shooting into a weedy, wooded area near the Bohannon’s mobile home.
When police arrested Bohannon on Thursday, he admitted that he had been carrying a cocked handgun while pushing his son’s stroller. Bohannon said the gun had accidentally fired and struck the boy in the head. Travis and his 4-year-old brother had been staying at their father’s home for the weekend because Bohannon and his wife are in the process of getting a divorce.

In one of the source files they said he had both sons on a walk. Does anyone know was this a private lot, trailer park, countryside, residental area ? sounds like living in a drug infested ghetto to have to carry a cocked gun while taking a walk with a stroller. Described as small town does seem odd to have to carry a cocked gun.
