Leslie Smith “I Don’t Want To Help Her. She’s Dead”
August 11, 2009 by thinkgoat
Raleigh, North Carolina 911 dispatchers go through rigorous training to handle all kinds of situations, from the most ridiculous to the most serious. Lately on the Dreamin’ Demon, the forums have had a plethora of arrests for people abusing the emergency system, calling because their fast food restaurant has quit serving breakfast at a certain time. And while those calls are absurd in nature, I’m sure the dispatcher on duty the day Leslie Smith called, would rank that one as one of the most bizarre of her career. While he explained to her he wanted the sheriff’s department to remove his girlfriend, he also explained he had shot her in the chest because she wouldn’t take his request seriously.
On Sunday afternoon, Leslie Smith dialed 911 very calmly and stated his live-in girlfriend, Jaquelyn Gore, wouldn’t leave when he told her so he shot her. “Is she beyond help?” “She should be, I shot her point blank in the chest.”
Now, while listening to the complete 911 call, I found myself pulling for Mr. Smith. I know, I know! Murder is wrong. He is just so matter of fact in his disdain for the 911 operator pressuring him into doing CPR on this woman. He can clearly be heard saying, “I don’t want to help her. She’sShe reviews
dead. This is ridiculous, I just shot her” NO SHIT! The entire time this poor lady on the other end maintains her professionalism while talking him into describing what he’s seeing and then talking him through the process of pumping her chest to keep her alive. And this poor guy, who clearly wanted her out of his house, is hesitant in following the operator’s same enthusiasm.
Well, Mr. Smith does attempt the life saving technique to no avail. He describes her last breaths and the operator continues to bark orders at him. “Don’t stop, Mr. Smith” she’s heard saying. But yet she keeps calling for him on the other end of the phone. Now I hope he was wondering the same thing I was, how in the hell was he to continue chest compressions “until help arrives” and chit chat with her on the phone. Bless his heart, he continued the chest massage. It was quickly interrupted when police arrived at his home barking more orders, like “Come out with your hands up”. So, like a good citizen, he did.
Leslie Edward Smith (62) was arrested for the murder of Jaquelyn Gore (48) and is being held without bond in the Wake County Jail. I couldn’t help think of Carl in the movie “Sling BladeSling Blade reviews
” when he calls the 911 operator after the murder of Doyle Hargraves. “Yes, ma’am. I’ve killed Doyle Hargraves with a lawnmower blade. Yes, ma’am, I’m right sure of it. I hit him two good whacks in the head with it. That second one just plum near cut his head in two…” There’s just something endearing about honesty.

I dunno, I can’t find myself pulling for this guy when he shot a woman in cold blood. There was no remorse for shooting his girlfriend. He didnt want to try to save her life, she was just an object he wanted removed.
I love your write-ups, Thinkgoat, and maybe my sarcasm meter is just down today(VERY possible..it IS 6:30 am lol). But I don’t feel “poor guy” when thinking of what he did or his callousness afterwords.

He says “I told the sheriff to get her outta my house Saturday night”… so did they and she came back? Or did they not – and this is the consequence of that?
While I don’t agree with his actions – I find myself wondering if she provoked him, not believing he would really shoot her? He says he’s been trying to get her out of his house and when he came home “she started her shit again, so I shot her.” Was alcohol involved for either of them? People tend to be more brazen with less functioning brain cells. Was either of them violent towards the other before?
So many questions. His demeanor makes me think he was an asshole to live with anyway – which begs one more question … why the fuck didn’t she just LEAVE??
I hope we find out more about this whole situation. Someone says they’re gonna shoot me – I’d much rather wonder if they’re serious from my car a mile away – ALIVE – not when they have the gun point blank to my chest!
Don’t really mean to blame the victim … just seems she may have had the choice/chance to leave alive – but called his “bluff”… only to find out he wasn’t bluffing.

I agree Zibarro…could this have been prevented? Scary though knowing the crazys out there!

Yeah-this is one of those stories that I find myself thinking rather detached about it, and I can totally understand the dark humor behind it all. I think it’s just a bad combo of the guy’s tone of voice, and suddenly realizing, well yeah, he DID just shoot her, so why WOULD he want to give her CPR?
Combined with the dispatcher’s seemingly insanely cheerful and unshaken voice and tone, the whole thing is almost like a skit. So this is one of those stories I do find dark humor in… *ashamed beneath the smile*

While I agree with you almost 100 percent of the time, Zibarro, I can’t fully concur on this one. This guy is clearly a fucking sociopath. From the 911 call we can tell that he is in complete control, knew what he did was wrong, and didn’t give a shit. Utterly cold-blooded. Therefore, whether she “provoked” him is a moot point IMO. Without a doubt, sociopaths are easily provoked, but that says more about them being total sociopaths than it does about their victims. I could see talk about whether she provoked him if he, say, punched her, but not when he shot her in cold blood.
Was she stupid for trying to hang around or coming back? Yeah, but anyone who would overreact to such a degree probably isn’t even overreacting, he just wanted an excuse to shoot her because he’s a fucking hateful, murderous piece of shit. Sounds like first-degree murder to me.

BTW, having said all that, I still think the call was pretty funny just because it’s so damn absurd! Are dispatchers obligated to insist on CPR, or something? Could she maybe lose her job if she didn’t at least try to force him to do it?

No doubt, Veronica, he IS a sociopath. I guess I find it hard to believe this is the first “incident” between these 2. Given that, from this incident and that phone call, we can all tell what an unpleasant asshole he is – it just bewilders me that this woman (or anyone for that matter) would stick around after he said to get out! She lived with him – she HAD to have seen him lose his temper with someone else at some point. I get the sense that he feels entitled to get his way all the time, no matter what.
I am in no way trying to “excuse” what he did… just trying to understand HER motive in sticking around. He is an A#1 douchebag without a doubt! I agree – First Degree Murder all the way! He’d made up his mind long before he pulled that trigger that, if she gave him more shit, he was gonna kill her. It sucks that she was (apparently) too naive too see it.
The dispatcher was funny – in an annoying kind of way. I wonder – how often does a 911 dispatcher find themselves in the position to give CPR instructions for the victim to the perpetrator?? LOL It probably is a rule though, that if someone is present, you have to at least try to get them to perform CPR. I find it funny in a fucked up way that he actually DID it!

Yes–I think it was the addition of the dispatcher, in her upbeat attitude. Her voice had that “there’s a silver lining in every cloud” lilt, and combined with the subject matter, the guy’s own out of place attitude, it was all surreal. Unfortunately easy to not identify with the victim at all.
I think you’re completely right about him being a sociopath, Veronica. I think that most people would be very upset even if they didn’t exactly feel guilty about killing someone else. I would probably have a few nerves showing if I murdered someone, even if I had every great reason to do it.

Exactly. He sounded exactly like she was a piece of scrap metal or something he wanted removed from his property, and couldn’t understand why that crazy dispatcher would want him to perform CPR on scrap metal.
Zibarro, I see your point, but I have to wonder if this “get out of my house or I’ll kill you” episode wasn’t preceded by lots and lots of “leave and I’ll kill you,” the calling card of many an abusive asshole.
