MAITLAND, Florida. – 60-year-old Diana May called 911 on Monday to report that her 18-year-old son had gone psychotic and had just stabbed her in the arm with a butter knife. While on the phone with 911, she informs them that they need to hurry as her son was looking for another weapon. At the urging of the dispatcher, Diana locks herself in the bathroom but can then be heard yelling “He’s here and he’s got a pitch fork. Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t do it!” when Alex confronts her again with a two-pronged barbecue fork. The line then goes dead. Police arrive at the scene and find Alex in the bathroom. After refusing to drop the weapon, he is shot and killed by police.

It is not clear on why Officer Steve Mendez used a gun and not the Taser he is issued, but I am going to take a guess that when police respond to a home in which they were told an 18-year-old has gone psychotic, stabbed his mother before the line went dead – that they do not enter the home with Tasers drawn. Maitland police nor the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are answering this question yet, for obvious reasons. While a cop shooting a man who they found with a weapon who stabbed his mother is tragic, it isn’t beyond the realm of being a logical reaction in that situation. What isn’t, at least to me, is the actions of Alex. What in the hell happened?

No reports have came in showing Alex as having any history of violence, and even in the 911 call (you can listen to it here) the mother states she should have taken him to the hospital and this this is the “first” episode. I am not saying this is drug related, and I have not read anywhere in which that has been determined the cause, but it reminds me of a friend of mine whose brother had a nasty reaction to some pills he had been given by some friends. Don’t know what they were, or if they ever found out, but I remember him thinking we were talking about him (we were actually laughing at how fucked up he was) and coming into the kitchen with a rifle and kept pointing it at his older brother and shouting for us to quit talking about him behind his back.

Anyway, sucks for everyone involved with this one. Will remain curious as to the cause of the violent outburst as well as the statement in regards to the use of a non-lethal alternative.

I don’t blame the police. I’d never take a taser to a knife fight. You need more force than the perp has. Tasers don’t always work the first hit and just pisses some folk off.

Always regrettable when someone dies like this, but unless things happened much differently than reported, the cop didn’t do a thing wrong. I feel bad for the officer, if this really was the boy’s first break, that’s got to be very hard to deal with. My heart goes out to the mom as well. I hope she has good help to deal with the loss of her son.

Chills is right, but what a cool collected woman. She had no idea of her demise.

I can’t find anywhere whether or not the mother died. As for the original source (not you, Morbid :) ), that’s some piss-poor reporting. They didn’t bury an integral part of the lede, they just left it out entirely.

Man, Veronica, you aren’t kidding. They also say that she locked herself in a bedroom and then called the cops, but clearly it’s the other way around. Then they go and say that she was “well-loved” and “worked” as a pharmacist. Sooooo, are we supposed to just assume that she died since they’re using past tense? That whole article is scheisse…. Jesus!

I would have shot him as this cop did. Armed men and forks, don’t mix kiddies.

He stabbed her with a knife, and had a fork…I think he was a zombie planning on eating his mother.

I wonder if he was on a xanax binge. I can’t take xanax, I have blackouts, and thankfully I’m more of a eat 4 bags of shredded cheese while sitting on the floor, I have gotten angry on them. If you’re already angry that doesn’t help. I’ve broken a ton of lamps, put holes in walls, straight up got into a fist fight with a man, which usually isn’t me. So, yeah, I wonder if he was hopped on a little too much xanax :(

That 911 call was intense. At one point she said he was sitting there next to her. If he was still in that violent phase, I know he was sitting there just burning up inside, somehow thought of that damn grill fork and went for it.

Honestly if my kids ever flip out like this without a history, I’m locking myself in the bathroom before I call 911.

Anyone have any good secrets to shoving a door closed when someone psychotic is on the other side pushing back? I’ve done it before, wont say why, I’m sure you can figure it out. and the stronger just went berzerk, and rammed the door as I tried pushing it and nearly broke both of my wrists, bruised my arm, and knocked me right down hard. There’s gotta be a secret to preventing that. Once I get the door closed, I’m good…I’m just spillin the gun case over on it’s side (sorry guns) to block my door. I just want to know the secret to preventing it from happening when they push back. I ask cos the 911 operator suggested it, and sometimes it’s not a good idea if the suspect follows you in there :/

“He was real stressed out about school lately; everybody was on him trying to get him straightened out,” said a friend.

College? He just graduated High school in May!!
He first stabbed her in the torso with a butter knife, wow, that had to have been most painful and yet she sounded calm, in shock, most likely.

Alex May graduated in May from Winter Park High School. Friends on Monday described him as a loner who was very smart, loved music, was depressed and never violent.

I’m curious to find out if he had just been prescribed an anti-depressant and this was a dangerous side-effect…..

I don’t think the cops acted incorrectly as they are to serve and protect. By serving and protecting they need to protect themselves as they enter situations where anyone else in their right mind wouldn’t. It’s just tragic the kid was so young.
