Worcester, MA – Darlene Haynes, 8-months pregnant and a mother of three, has been reduced to little more than a memory and a foul odor. After she hadn’t been seen in more than three days, and after neighbors began to notice a fetid smell emanating from the direction of her home, her landlord entered her apartment to investigate. Monday afternoon, he found her body wrapped in bedding and stuffed into a closet. The remains had already began to decompose – the body was so badly mangled that authorities had difficulty even identifying her gender at the scene. Once the body was on the autopsy table, the ME made a shocking discovery – Darlene’s fetus was missing. It had been physically removed from her body. As in, cut the hell out. The question now is, where the hell is the fetus?

Darlene Haynes

Darlene Haynes

The ME’s office stated that the fetus could have survived, but would be in dire need of medical attention. One news source states the fetus was a female. Authorities are checking with the hospitals and urging people to come forward if they are suspicious of anyone who all of a sudden has a brand spankin’ new baby. An Amber Alert has not been issued because there are no descriptions of the suspect or the victim. The cause of death in Darlene’s case is undetermined as of yet, but it has been reported that blunt force trauma to the head might have been a factor. And, well, a ginormous gaping hole in her stomach, maybe?

Darlene’s aunt, Sandra Grandmaison, commented that Darlene, 23, has led a troubled life. She stated that, though Darlene is a loving and giving person, she never really developed intellectually. “She was a very sad, very young girl who never really grew up,” she said. “Darlene does not have the know-how or the ability to sense danger.” Darlene had custody of just one of her children – the other two had been placed with relatives some time ago. That child was not present at the time of the murder.

Worcester police continue to investigate. Anyone with information on the case or the whereabouts of the baby is urged to call Worcester detectives at 508-799-8651. And, as always, I will update this story as more information is made available.

Update:
Julia Corey, a 35-year-old homeless woman, is being held on $2M bail for allegedly killing Darlene Haynes and carving the baby from her womb. She has not been officially charged at the time I type this, but she was arrested shortly after being questioned. More importantly, the baby was found alive and in good health. She is currently in Speare Memorial Hospital under the name “Baby Jane Doe”.

Wister, MA (that’s how they pronounce it). This is a terrible story. It has all the signs of someone who wanted a baby, and was willing to kill for it. For some reason, I have the feeling she knew the person somehow. I hope the baby is fine at least.

If you want a baby, have one. Science is on you’re side.

  • Such a horrible story. 🙁 I hope the baby is found alive and they kill the heartless person who did this.

  • sarabei

I can understand being desperate for wanting a baby, truly I can, I can’t understand KILLING someone for one though….GOD I hope the child is alright and found soon!!

  • Peeperann

I have never understood the mind set of someone who could do this. What, they just start thinking, hey, I deserve a baby, I want one, but i’m not pregnant, or I can’t get pregnant so i’ll go cut open the lady down the street because she already has kids and i’ll take her baby.

No matter that she’ll be dead and mutilated, and the other children will be motherless. I want what I want and I want it now. That poor woman and her family. Dear God, please help find that baby, let him or her be alive and healthy and bring this monster who this to justice.

  • DarkPrincess

You know it has to be some crazy bitch that wanted a baby. Hello life in prison.

  • mjmsepm

Its stories like this that make me scared when i am pregnant…It is sad. Also it sound like she shouldnt have been pregnant 2 children taken away?It still doesnt give someone an excuse to murder this woman.

  • CassieMomma

Your right Jury, there are many ways….why kill for a child. It is obviously not ok to take one life for another.

  • PinkiGreen

Shit like this terrified me when I was preggers…

I hope they find the baby soon.

  • thehesbomb

She sounds like she’d not had a good life – chronically abused by her on again/off again boyfriend, abusing drugs, losing custody of her kids…

I also found this on CNN:

A friend of Haynes told CNN affiliate WHDH that she had received a text message from Haynes at 11:20 p.m. Thursday that said she was having wine coolers with a friend at her apartment. That was the last she heard from her.

It sounds like the concerns expressed in some of the comments on other news articles may have had valid concerns regarding her drinking/drugging while pregnant.

Not that this in any way excuses what happened, so please don’t try to read between the lines to find that. It just makes me wonder whether the psycho that did this somehow “justified” it. It also makes me that much more concerned about the baby. If she *had* been a substance abuser during her pregnancy the chances that the baby is going to need medical assistance are much greater.

  • Peeperann

If you want a baby, have one. Science is on you’re side.

Not always Jury. Sometimes no matter what, some people cannot have children, my oldest sister being one of them. This in no way excuses what was done to her or her baby.

    This was just pure evil.

  • ecvmanzo

This is one of the things that I feared the most with my last two pregnancies. I was always very careful of my surroundings. I hope baby is found soon.

  • Interesting, to me, that people consciously fear this. Not that it’s not absolutely nightmarish – I guess I just tend to fear things that are likely to happen to me or my loved ones. When my sister was pregnant, I feared all sorts of shit, but this didn’t even cross my mind.

Great, guys… geez. Now, when I’m preggos, I’m going to be lying awake in bed, clutching my tummy, wondering when the boogeywoman is going to come eviscerate me. And it’ll be ALL YOUR FAULT. 😉

  • runnergirl

Agreed Athena. Not something I worried about with either of my pregnancies, but there was definitely plenty of other items on that list!

  • ecvmanzo

Seriously, if it wasn’t one thing it would be another. I think pregnancy makes you a little crazy, and for some even crazier. I recall my 1st pregnancy, I feared large furniture falling on my baby! It was due to many earthquakes I experienced living here in California. I had only been here perhaps 7 months by the time I felt one, and I was already expecting. Man did I fear shit as a pregnant woman. The 2nd pregnancy I just ate like a pig, no fears, well expect for heartburn.

  • sarabei

There are just so many loonies out there….seriously this probably wouldn’t happen to the average person but that it COULD happen and HAS happened ***shudder***

  • NoWhining

The baby would have been Haynes’ fourth daughter. She left behind Jasmine, 5, and Lilli, 3, who were being raised by Haynes’ grandmother, and Christina, 1, who Haynes had custody of.

Hayne’s great-aunt, Sanrda Grandmaison….described Haynes as a loving mother who was friendly to strangers, and, she said, was severely developmentally disabled as a result of abuse as a young child.

Grandmaison estimated that Haynes functioned as a 12- or 13-year-old would- and had a hard time holding down a job.

Someway, somehow I hope they find the monster that would do a thing like this. You have to be a special kind of evil to not just kill a pregnant woman – but then proceed to cut her open and remove her unborn child. God only knows if that child is even still alive. Born early, under the worst conditions and to an *alleged* drug user/abuser. I just don’t see how this baby will survive.

Someone has to know something. Someone has to have seen her with someone else or heard her talking about them. I hope they are checking phone and text messages, computer messages – this can’t be totally random.

RIP Darlene. We’re praying for your baby – as well as your other children.

  • papplejuice

This woman was severely developmentally disabled. Where the hell was the GD State of Massachusetts to provide her with case mangement, supportive living, parent coaching and life skills ? WTF? do we just let these people out in society to fend for themselves? So vulnerable like this? I am utterly disgusted. Of course she made bad decisions- how could she not? She did not have the skills necessary to do otherwise. This is so disturbing. I have been a case manager RN for 20 years and I have a caseload of at least 20 people in supported apartment living, supervised apartments etc and yes,it takes alot of work. But these people are human beings and we are suppose to be a civilized society. As far as this heinous crime- MY GOD this is incomprehesible. I can only imagine how this poor woman has been taken advantage of and been abused for years. I always read your site- all of you on the DD are very insightful and astute, but this is the 1st time I have ever commented. Thank you for bringing the reality of what is truly out there to the public. I’ve seen first hand many similar situations of pure evil that truly do exist and met really great people not willing to turn a blind eye to it.

Update: Baby found safe, two arrested

WORCESTER, Mass. – Police in central Massachusetts say a baby girl who was cut from her mother’s womb has been found alive and two people have been arrested in the woman’s killing.

Police said Wednesday the girl appears to be in fair health at a New Hampshire hospital.

Thirty-five-year-old Julie Corey and an unidentified man have been arrested in New Hampshire after friends said they were suspicious of Corey’s claims she had given birth. Corey has been charged as a fugitive from justice.

  • Daringdove

Another report says that Julie Corey was reportedly a neighbor of Darlene’s and yet another neighbor thinks they heard poor Darlene’s cries for help. Ok…then why in the hell didn’t this person help or call for help?? This is just sickening. Thank goodness the baby seems to be healthy!

  • Thank goodness that the baby was found alive. Im nearly 7 months pregnant and can’t help but worry about all the loonies out there who would do such a thing. ::clutches belly, whispers…it’s ok little guy, mommy wont let anyone take you::

  • nadine

on cnn news they caught the girl who did the crime THANK GOD
    what a vicious vicious person

  • Zibarro

Great news to wake up to! Devil bitch is behind bars and the baby is ALIVE!

Police said Corey had reportedly gone to New Hampshire to relocate. A newspaper report said she arrived at a Plymouth homeless shelter Tuesday night. She told workers there that the girl was 6 days old and identified herself as the mother but had no information on the child, according to the Union Leader in New Hampshire.

Stupid cunt didn’t even have a home to take this baby to! I hope and pray she fries.

The man was released – which seems odd. Hope they follow up with ‘why’.

Haynes had picked the name Sheila Marie for her fourth child.

    Be well little Sheila.

    All around fucked up story.

  • sarabei

Thank God/Goddess that the baby is alright. I pray these two fry and suffer for eternity. HOW could anyone do that to another living creature is beyond me..sigh….wonder if I will ever cease to be amazed??

  • Jury

How do you do this to another human being, then go to a shelter and have dinner?

  • Went ahead and updated this and added a bit of vijo, yo.

It is useless to rant and rave about how mentally disabled people are taken advantage of when society takes no firm position in the lives of these people. Family members are the first I’d point a finger of shame at since none of them seemed to be willing to get this woman’s tubes tied; they just kept taking her babies as they were born without concern how many she’d likely produce in the future. Did any of them really expect this poor girl to live life to old age? The odds were stacked against her a long time ago; the least someone could have done is taken charge and insisted precautions should be taken for her own well-being. How ironic her relative would say “she never really developed intellectually”… like they have intelligence… FAIL!

CONCORD, N.H. – A woman accused of cutting a baby girl from her mother’s womb in Massachusetts has been arraigned on a fugitive from justice charge in New Hampshire and is being held on $2 million bail.

Thirty-five-year-old Julie Corey of Worcester, Mass., appeared in Concord District Court via video from the county jail Thursday morning, a day after she was arrested at a homeless shelter in Plymouth, N.H. She did not waive extradition to be brought back to Massachusetts. The judge scheduled a hearing for Aug. 30.

Whether they’re developmentally disabled or not, you can’t force sterilization on a person.

knotme – I totally agree with your comment.

  • And THAT is unfortunate! Imagine the wonderful world we’d live in if that were, indeed, the case.

Not much follow-through in that thought process, huh? Tell me, who decides who qualifies as developmentally disabled? Depending on the criteria, you might find yourself on that list. Any of us could wind up on that list. And that’s why forced sterilization is bad. We don’t need our government playing god any more than they already are. Taking away an individual’s right to procreate violates the most fundamental human right.

The fact of the matter is this… Worcester is a fucked up city with fucked up problems and it seems there’s a lot of people with a proclivity for murdering pregnant women in that city and raping little kids. The cops are just as corrupt as the criminals so they don’t do anything. So unfortunately, it was only a matter of time before something really disgusting happened & actually caught national attention for once. In fact, just a few months ago, some poor bastard was butchered in his front yard with a machete in front of an entire audience of neighbors that didn’t do anything. At any rate, the victim did know the suspect & the suspect was the last person seen with her according to the Telegram & Gazette. RIP Darlene.

This was a mentally deficient woman who, I think I can safely go out on a limb here, was more than likely paying for her FOUR children (at age 23??), with social services (welfare); no real means to support these children, but just poppin’ ’em out left and right. Oh wait – I forgot – the two older ones were not even in her care anymore.

I don’t need to “think it through” because, unfortunately, it’s just a dream and will never happen. Good people with jobs and the means to take care of children either can’t have them or are only choosing to have 1 or 2. These mouth breathers just breed and breed and let society take care of them.

I’m done with the topic of forced sterilization, as it is a moot point. I’m just merely pointing out that, the world would be a wonderful place if only responsible, loving people had children. (again, I realize this is a fantasy world).

I am sorry about what happened to that young lady. She didn’t deserve such a horrible thing happening to her. The silver lining is she won’t be a future drain on MA public assistance because, Good Lord!, she was only 23 and had 4 children. Imagine how many more she could have popped out during her childbearing years.

  • thinkgoat

There’s no polite way to say this. The victim was living in such squalor that a police officer called to her apartment the day before her body was found on Monday assumed that the stench emanating from her bedroom was the result of her filthy living conditions.

Yesterday, two large fans did little to mitigate the foul smell still wafting through the apartment. Her bedroom contained a dirty mattress soaked with a large stain that appeared to be blood, along with a bureau dotted with pictures of her children. In the kitchen, a plastic toy car was covered with dead insects. In another bedroom, a child’s crib was filled to overflowing with blankets and paper bags. Trash and debris were strewn everywhere.

Police haven’t said when they think the killing took place, but Ms. Haynes’ neighbor said she heard “crazy banging” coming from her friend’s apartment about 2 a.m. Saturday.

“My room started to shake,” she said.

On Sunday, Ms. Haynes’ hungry cat ran into the neighbor’s apartment looking for food. The same day the neighbor went into her back hall and noticed that Ms. Haynes’ bedroom window, which can be accessed from the hall, was open.

She said she fed Ms. Haynes’ Chihuahua through the window, unaware that her friend’s body was in a closet a few feet away. About 2 p.m. she called police because she hadn’t seen Ms. Haynes for days and was concerned about the pets. An officer looked in the window and told her that animal control would respond the next day.

“We smelled this terrible stench, but I told him I thought it was garbage,” the neighbor said.

I’m done with the topic of forced sterilization, as it is a moot point. I’m just merely pointing out that, the world would be a wonderful place if only responsible, loving people had children. (again, I realize this is a fantasy world).

Forced sterilization by various world governments has existed throughout the twentieth century, and is continuing in many societies as we speak.
It has happened here, there, and almost everywhere at some point in the last hundred years.

Historically speaking, the mentally handicapped, developmentally delayed, and mentally ill citizens are almost always the initial primary targets; this angle is exploited politically, to rally and sway the public’s opinion (and votes, if needed).
Once this has proven effective, the secondary targets are usually the most impoverished and homeless citizens, along with those whom have chronic or genetic illnesses, and congenital disorders.
At one point in the United States, there was even a policy in some states or districts to sterilize the deaf; beliefs at that time were that this would prevent future birth defects, including deafness and developmental delays.

When any society assumes the responsibility of deciding reproductive rights
of selected citizens, it runs the risk of self-destruction.
By accepting this policy, the ruling governments achieve a level of control
that may eventually be levied against all of it’s peoples.

One man’s dream is another man’s nightmare.

Another shining example of how sterilization would have come in handy for these children and society…

    Just sayin’….

Oh but, why should the children have any rights?? We must let this lowlife, welfare mother have rights instead of children. *eyeroll*

Julie Corey’s brother states that she already has 5 kids.

“I can’t say I’m surprised at this, but I’m upset,” said Corey. “I don’t know why she would do this. She had five kids. She had every opportunity to keep them.”
