Lafayette, Colorado – It’s one thing to be featured on the Dreamin’ Demon for being a callous individual who not only thought up horrid things to do to other individuals, but to be so open and honest about the crime is a level not often seen here. I’ve opined a few times about what goes through the minds of these assholes…the motivation behind their actions, what they thought would be the outcome, and the reasons why. Unfortunately some of that curiosity was sated when I read the story of Benjamin Koller and what, in his own words, he did to his two month-old son, Jack. Now I regret being armed with that information. They say loose lips sink ships and if ever there was an example of that statement ringing true, this story will be one to watch play out in court. Benjamin not only admitted to the crime of putting his infant son in intensive care and not being expected to live, but he told in great detail, the how’s and why’s.

Most unresponsive patients have their airway checked and a nice sternum rub to determine responsive levels. The rub works well as it delivers pain which will cause most patients to react. Rub your knuckles on your sternum. It hurts. It’s a perfect gauge. So one would think it would be easier and more politically correct to perform this maneuver than say, biting arms and legs to stimulate an infant out of succumbing to their injuries. Especially after being suffocated to the point of turning colors and lethargy. But this was the method Benjamin supposedly used on his son each time he cut off his airway in an attempt to silence a crying baby.
See, Benjamin was working a 40 hour week and most of the abuse happened toward the end of that arduous schedule. He admitted that he only abused Jack no more than three times over several weeks. The suffocating incidents were only because Benjamin was exhausted and on Tuesday, when little Jack was not breathing, he suddenly lost his resourcefulness and didn’t think to call 911. In his own words, Koller said he’d put two of his fingers over his son’s mouth, two on his throat and his thumb on the back of Jack’s neck to constrict his airway. Once he’d turn colors he’d start with his biting-back-to-responsiveness technique, starting with the arms and then moving to his legs while increasing the intensity. According to one of the detectives, Koller said that his child would cry some more but it was a “different cry” and a “shallow cry”. He also described it as a “help me cry – as if hurt.” And after smothering his son, he’d ask himself, “What did I just do?” I’ll tell you what you did fucker. You sadistically tortured your son to an almost certain death.
But there’s more to his confession. Koller admits slapping his son repeatedly, admits dropping him, describes whipping the child by his legs back to an upright position which would sometimes result in them head-butting each other.
The hospital where little Jack was taken, noted the child had been in previously with bruising on his legs and arms, swollen and red eyes, and perhaps some retinal detachment. These, of course, were explained by the attempt to catch Jack as he jerked back out of the asshole’s arms. Yeah, right. All in all, this 2 month-old child has significant brain damage, is on a ventilator and is not expected to live. If by some slim chance this child makes it, he would not be able to walk, talk, nor feed himself.
So where’s mom? Well, her name is Jennifer Schmidt and currently, she has no charges brought against her. I hope the Colorado authorities change that shit quickly. There’s absolutely no way, in my opinion, she didn’t notice these things. But as far as her adoring boyfriend/father of the love child, he’s being held on a $1 million bond as they investigate this child abuse case further. If he bonds out, he’s to have no contact with anyone under 18 and cannot be in possession of any weapons.
And if this entire story wasn’t enough, at the end of Koller’s interview with detectives, he looked at them and said, ” I can’t believe I admitted that to you guys without a lawyer.” Well I can. And it gives me hope that more fuckers like you will rat themselves out in the future. Thanks for being so open about your methods and the reasoning, Benjamin, you sick son of a bitch.
