You know, as I quickly approach my 27th year, I’ve been getting more and more lectures about how it’s good to have children young (I plan to wait until around 30). Maybe there’s some truth to it. Mom might have had more of a chance ten years ago…
And, not that any indulgence on mom’s part justifies this heinous crime, but I wonder if being consistently over-indulged contributed to this situation?

It’s certainly been known to do so, Melissa. I wouldn’t be surprised if something like that factored in.
Besides, I would imagine it takes A LOT of energy to beat someone within an inch of their life.

You know, I would love to get these two little bad-asses within an arms reach and learn ‘em some manners and respect.
Put them in the same room and tell each of them they said the other was ugly and let them beat the shit out of each other, we wouldn’t even have to do any work. What a fucked up bitch she is though, to beat her mother within an inch of her life and then leave her exposed. On top of that she might not even survive! Damn!

It seems this young woman thinks that her mother owes her anything she wants. I don’t know what causes people to get that attitude, but it’s certainly a deadly one. I hope the mother recovers to full health and manages to heal emotionally. She didn’t deserve that sort of treatment.
On a more practical note, I don’t understand people like this. She wanted to go surfing, her mother refused, so she beat her into unconsciousness? How did she figure that would get her what she wanted? Unconscious/comatose/dead people can’t drive. And a person who has been attacked isn’t going to want to do any favors even if they are still physically capable of driving. It doesn’t make sense.
If she’d gotten anger management classes and learned about contingency plans before this happened, things may have turned out differently. (Anger management and problem solving skills only work when a person is willing to make use of them.) Her mother had other things to do than take her surfing. She could have said, “fine,” walked out and found another mode of transportation: bus, bike, friend, cab or feet. (Although I don’t know how plausible it would be to get a surfboard on a bus or a bike!) Or she could have accepted that due to transportation issues, surfing was out of the question that day and persued another activity.
This situation hits a nerve, mainly because it involves an adult who got furiously angry because her parent wouldn’t drive her somewhere. I’m 30 and can’t drive due to a permanent disability (granted, I can’t surf, either, but there are other places I like to go.) My parents are kind enough to take me to the grocery, doctor’s appointments, family gatherings, etc. There are times when I ask to be taken somewhere and my parents have other plans or plans change at the last moment. On those occasions, I find another mode of transportation (usually the bus) or use my contingency plan by doing something else. Yes, it can be disappointing and even frustrating, but my parents’ sole function is not to provide me with 24-hour taxi service! They choose to drive me places on a regular basis because they recognize my limitations and for some reason, they continue to love me. No one likes to be taken advantage of or treated like a servant, especially a parent, so I always let them know how grateful I am. I can’t imagine ever beating my mom or dad into unconsciousness and leaving them lay in the hot sun because they had something to do other than drive me around. The concept is alien to me and the thought of someone doing violence to her own parent, especially over something so trivial, confuses and sickens me.
