Andrew Gomez Drowned Tiffany and Baby Kaylani

Jacksonville, FL - Tiffany Sykes-Cecconi started out life as a foster child but was adopted into a family where she was loved and she considered her siblings her very best friends. She was beautiful, a young mother and unlike some of the other women featured here, seemed to have her priorities straight. On her MySpaceMySpace
page, she states “My daughter is my life…school and my daughter are currently my focus.” Unfortunately, Andrew Gomez put an end to that focus and the lives of both Tiffany and her 18 month old daughter, Kaylani, in one of the most puzzling murders in recent memory.
By all accounts, Andrew and Tiffany were lifelong friends. People say Andrew loved Tiffany and her baby and would never harm them, but he did. Last week, Tiffany and Kaylani went to their community pool with Andrew for an afternoon swim when something went wrong. As Tiffany sat on the edge of the pool, Andrew carried Kaylani into the water with him. Andrew began to move Kaylani around in the pool in a way that upset the baby and Tiffany asked him to stop. When he didn’t, she got into the pool and tried to take Kaylani from him. Andrew began to fight Tiffany while he was holding Kaylani, but eventually dropped the baby into the water and began fighting Tiffany with both hands.
Tiffany’s mother went to check on her daughter and granddaughter when it began to rain and they had not returned. What she found when she got there is sure to remain in her mind forever. All three were in the pool, but Tiffany was at the bottom, Kaylani was unresponsive and Andrew was naked, with his arms outstretched and in a trance-like state.
Andrew admitted to drowning Tiffany, but says he does not remember holding her underwater. And Kaylani? He didn’t drown her, he simply did not help her. He allowed that helpless baby to drown.
Now I don’t know what could have happened to cause Andrew to commit such a heinous act to someone who allowed their child to call him “Uncle.” There did not seem to be any “lover scorned” type of motive. According to Andrew’s MySpace, he is very much a gay man. This leaves me to suspect one of two things, a psychotic break or some recreational drug use gone bad. Either way, Andrew is charged with two counts of murder and is going to have alot of explaining to do to a whole lot of people that loved Tiffany and little Kaylani. Good luck with that. I’m pretty sure no excuse is ever going to be good enough.

This story is tearing at my heart. Tiffany went into the water to protect and save her baby, she didn’t hesistate. I keep picturing Kaylani in the water and Tiffany fighting with Andrew trying to get to her baby and then to be drowned herself…….so awful, why?

I am never one to play “devils advocate”, but…where were the lifeguards and other swimmers, with this being a community pool and all? I am all for frying the baby killing maniac but I want to know where the other human beings were while this woman was screaming for hers and her child’s life?

The article says he ingested large amounts of water from the pool. Shame the coward failed when it comes to killing himself. Why don’t they just take themselves out instead of the children and baby momma?

Obviously, no one was at this neighborhood pool at the time. Not all of them have, or are required, to have lifeguards.

For those of you who wonder whats with all the Andrew supporters,
when you have close friends its hard to believe they could do something as major as murder, especially so unexpectedly.
If you knew Andrew, he was kind, caring, outgoing, optimistic, and fun.
People loved him being around, he could brighten up any place.
I don’t know why he would do something of the sort, it doesn’t make sense.
I don’t know if it were drugs or alcohol or maybe he just lost his mind, but if he were in his right mind/sober, he would NEVER do anything like that, he wouldn’t harm a fly, it’s just not in his normal nature.
To be honest, I’m shocked he did this, as I knew Tiffany to be his best friend, and he loved Kaylani with all his heart, it was clear that he did.
There isn’t any excuse for what he did, but I KNOW if he was standing there in a trance, daze, whatever, he was probably feeling so guilty, and by admitting to what he did, he accepted the consequences for his actions.
The Lord forgives, and no sin is greater than another, I honestly think in his heart he feels total and utter remorse for what he did.
My thoughts and heart goes out to Tiffany & Kaylani’s family and friends,
and also to Andrew & his as well, he did something that will haunt him forever, and I can tell just by his mug shot that he feels guilty for what he did, and he looks really rough.
I definitely think he needs some help, and if he really is sorry, the Lord will look into his heart and forgive him, and if not, then he will pay the consequences for that too.
Note that he didn’t drown Kaylani, he WAS honest and said he didn’t know why he let it happen, it’s not much, but it’s better than some lie I guess.
Nobody deserves to die, I personally think, and I know Tiffany and Kaylani are in heaven, with no more suffering and hurting to experience.
All I want to know is WHY.. WHY this had to happen

It’s just so sad to think he did that. I looked at her myspace and she DID look like she was making a life for herself and her babygirl. I just don’t get it… drown the mom and the daughter? He just let the baby go and watched her sink?? He does deserve whatever he gets.

Fuck this guy! How could anyone do that do a baby!?! It baffles me. If he wanted to start a fight at least have some brain in you to take the baby out of the water. Even if this guy was high or psycho how could he have a close relationship with Kaylani and gets enraged enough to let her drown? Douchebag should have died instead. How could this guy do this to these angels’ families? My condolences to the Cecconi & Sykes families.

Kaylani is one of the cutest toddlers I have ever seen. I cannot fathom how anyone could do something so horrific. RIP, Tiffany and Kaylani. I can’t even imagine the terror and helplessness both of them must have felt. Heart-wrenching.

He said he didn’t remember holding her down, so I think there’s more to this story than what information was given, plus he was naked, you can’t tell me somebody’s not in their right mind if a huge scene like this happened and they were naked.
So either there’s more that we don’t know about or Andrew needs serious mental help, my grandmother works at a psychiatric hospital and it sounds like a dillusional problem to her, which means he would have lost full control of his mind and his actions, you can’t blame somebody for having a mental illness and not knowing it, sometimes thats something you can pinpoint on your own.

For all those who believe he deserves to die, you have no right or say on who dies and who doesnt.
this man NEEDS help. i’ve known him for awhile.
He is a gentle person, when he isnt mad.
i think he has some anger issues and i think hes bipolar.
i stopped hanging out w. him because i honestly thought he was going crazy.
he has trust issues. he obviously cant trust himself.
he never had a real father. he took care of himself and his mother. and now whos looking out for his mother? i just feel bad for him and his family. i really hate to see this happen and all that has happened.
i never got a chance to meet KK but i knew Tiffany and i know she was a great mother. Andrew, i pray for your mind willget better and wont be destroyed phiscally or mentally. i hope you find god in some way. i hope it isnt too late for you. you had good intentions in your heart but your mind is lost in a sea.

for those of you who dont know him
you cant possibly imagine the type of man he is.
This is not something I can in the least bit imagine him doing while in a sound mind.
Though I do sympathize for the Sykes family as this is a VERY tragic loss, I can not possibly turn my back on someone who has been such a good friend to me. I will always love Gomez because he has always cared about me.
I know that he has remorse for his actions.
And I admire him for not backing down from them.
He admitted to his actions and though I think he deserves to remeber his actions forever (as I know he will) I dont believe that his life should be taken or that he should “rot in hell,” or whatever anyone else thinks.
If Gomez was in his right mind he would have never done something like this. I think that there is a large part of this story that we dont know.

You mean, do they have the death penalty in Florida? Indeed we do. In fact, the most recent execution in the state of Florida occured on February 11, 2009. I don’t know if his crime would be eligible for the death penalty, since he was not exactly sane at the moment. Not that I’m defending him. Based upon the information presented, I certainly feel he is deserving of the death penalty.
Concerning the mental illness, my opinion is that if he is mentally ill, it was his responsibility to seek treatment before this happened. The condition is not his fault, but failure to seek treatment is. That failure resulted in the deaths of two innocent people. This, of course, is assuming that he was not seeking treatment. If he was recieving treatment or was turned away for some reason, that would significantly change things, at least in my perspective, which admittedly doesn’t count for much.
Thankfully for him, my opinions, as well as the opinions of everyone else here, won’t decide his fate. That currently resides in the hands of the court.

I’m sure her family and loved ones will be comforted by the fact that he will never forget this. They’ll never forget it either… so he deserves no more punishment than that?
I would bet you that everyone close to tiffany constantly imagines the terror and pain of her last moments whenever they close their eyes. To know that her baby suffered almost the same fate. Do you have any idea what a horrible way to die drowning is? Any at all? Ah but you’re more concerned with poor Gomez, who’s still alive and has a chance at a future he robbed 2 people of.
Feel free to continue loving him, that I cannot change, but I’d advise against ever going swimming with him. (Because clearly, him caring for you will NOT stop him from drowning you)
