Worcester, MA This is a story of a father fighting for his right to bond with a son he hadn’t known for seven years. The father, Leslie Schuler, went through the court system a few months ago to obtain proof of paternity through a DNA test. A year prior to that, Leslie petitioned the courts for visitation rights. “I would like a chance to become the child’s father, not just a paycheck once a week.” Admirable. After 7 years of longing for a relationship with the fruit of his loin he got his chance to become more than a supplier of a few dollars a week and got Nathaniel Turner for the summer. So what happened within those few weeks that led to this 7 year-old succumbing to his injuries?

Nathaniel Turner Leslie Schuler

You guessed it. Long lost daddy had a heavy hand when it came to discipline. When the psychological shit didn’t work on Nathaniel, (like stripping the boy of all possessions including a bed) Leslie began using a belt and escalating the abuse each time until he decided to show his big bag of tricks on Father’s Day, when authorities have concluded the worse of the abuse occurred. It is also alleged that Schuler slammed his son’s head so hard into a wall, it dented it. When Schuler and his girlfriend took unconscious Nathaniel to the hospital, doctors reported bruising over most of his body, stomach, neck, head and face. Nathaniel was taken off life support and he died SaturdaySaturday reviewsSaturday reviews in Massachusetts.

Leslie Schuler and his live-in girlfriend were arraigned on assault charged immediately following Nathaniel’s death. Tuesday, formal charges of murder were brought against his father.

One of the most horrifying aspects of this case:  no court papers stating Leslie Schuler was granted custody during the summer nor visitation rights have ever been found. When Nathaniel’s grandmother (whom he lived with in Alabama) was led to believe there was a ruling she didn’t want to get in the way of the boy’s trip, thinking a court order existed. “She didn’t want to get tied in a big mess with it, so she went along.” Nathaniel’s mother lived close by in Massachusetts and would take care of him on the weekends. It’s further reported Schuler wouldn’t allow her to take him the last few times nor would he let his son out of the house. A maternal cousin stated, “He could have dropped him (off) to us if he couldn’t handle him. He’s only had the kid only a month, and now this happened.”

For a father to go through the court system to try and gain paternal visitation rights, what the fuck snapped in his head after a month, to make him beat this child to death?

I also read that Nathaniel’s mother gave legal guardianship to her mother when he was born after suffering from some mental and emotional issues. She and this asswipe had another child together but she lost the daughter in a fire at their home in 2002. Court records show Alicia Turner as having sole custody of her son and even though he lived with his grandmother, her legal guardianship status ran out 4 years ago.

Ugh…this story is truly heartbreaking. I can’t even describe the hatred I feel for Schuler for all he has done to that child. It is my understanding that the child led a happy, well-adjusted, and healthy life with his grandmother…he had love. Schuler had no fucking right.

One of the statements I read about Nathaniel- he was planning on going to camp with his church youth group. When he found out he wouldn’t be able to go this summer, he continued to raise money so the other children would have the opportunity. It’s just horrible.

Why would anyone do such a thing, especially to their own child, as I read story, the child never saw real dad, mom gave custody to her mom???? now a man gets out of prison after 7 years and wants to reunite WHY????? why send a small child to be with someone he does not know/ and on that note? Did they really know Leslie??????????? NO NO NO
Why did they ship him to Leslie’s Home for the Summer, Why would they do that??? Maybe more to story, But non the less, Tragedy story and my heart breaks for that poor poor young boy who was living a normal life, then swept away to dear old dad’s and now DEAD, what the fuck?
Nathaniel sorry you had to endure such abuse and pain until your death, which now you are an angel, for Leslie, MAY HE ROT IN HELL AND DIE A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE DEATH, YOU PIECE OF FUCKING GARBAGE, ROT IN HELL

I don’t get it. Why bother? He could have just as easily let the boy stay with his grandmother and asked for visitation. It seems like she would have accommodated. She was already doing a great job. He could have been Disneyland dad and she could have continued doing all the “work.” Idiot.

He didn’t want to have to keep paying child support. This was an easy way out of it. (so he thought)

The grandma thought that the courts had ordered her to let the boy go with the dad. She didn’t want to get in trouble for not following directive. That’s why she let him go.

It sucks that people can be this heartless!

Bingo M3. He didn’t realize that the child support didn’t come close to the real expenses of raising a child, let alone the time or emotional energy.

Clearly, dad had macho issues. I’ve heard of men going through family court to gain custody out of spite or just to make a statement. Maybe the girlfriend says one day, “Why don’t you ever see your child?” and, before they know it, he’s compelled to seek custody out of pride or competition. His desire to be a father is a mirage generated by that greed or sense of competition, a desire that dissipates just as soon as the goal of achieving custody is attained.

I really feel for the child.. but there seems to be a bit of confusion over who had custody of him… i personally would have asked to see the supposed “court order” i mean this guy was gone from the child’s life for the last 7 years..
