For 15 years I was the senior paralegal for a major baby food / care items company. I was the “go to gal” for product liability matters, advertising claims and the like. I can’t remember the exact statistic (it’s been a while), but an infant’s sucking strength is huge compared to an adult’s, as is their urge to suck. Hence…. pacifiers. Have you ever tried to pull a nipple (bottle OR breast) out of an infant’s mouth when they don’t want it out? It’s not easy (and it can hurt – like… really hurt!).

Putting a finger into an infant’s mouth to pacify them is indeed an acceptable alternative to a pacifier. It’s a strategy used by many, and I believe some physicians even do this to gauge suck strength, especially in infants who may not be breastfeeding or taking a bottle well.

Having said that, consider this…. if you put your finger into an infant’s mouth and they latch on hard, it is (in my opinion) entirely plausible that an untrimmed fingernail could cut the little tongue if placement isn’t “just so.”

With that in mind, personally, I can totally believe Matthew had no intention of harming Zachary. I think it will be really difficult for any prosecutor to see this matter through to a conviction. Following the incident, Matthew did all that can be expected to make sure Zachary received the medical attention he needed. And by all accounts from “family” and Zachary’s mom, Zachary seems to be well cared for, loved and tended to appropriately. Until someone steps forward with additional information disputing Matthew’s love and concern for this sweet baby, I can’t go to a place that allows for “bashing” Matthew. I think what we have here was truly an accident.

Well, in defense of some of these people that visit the D’D. Some are of lower intelligence. Some are kids. Some are used to text\Myspace speak. Others are just not computer literate. But to be honest, it’s not just defenders here that display this type of communication.

For the most part, if I get where they are coming from, or understand what they are trying to say, I will let it slide. My mother was as smart as a whip. But if it is a retarded standpoint on top of the terrible spelling\punctuation, then I may say something about it.

The most important thing is not that Matt is on this site, but that your son is okay. MAtt is a big boy. DOn’t worry about what people like us, strangers, think about him. i dont think that it was on purpose matt is not a violent man at all… i truly think that matt is sorry for what happened, he told me when i got home that zack was hurt and he thought that i should call the doctor and i did so, the doctor said just to be on the safe side go to the er and have it looked at so matt drove us to the er and thats when the law got involved. the law thinks there is more to the story than what is being told but there isnt we have told all and what we have said is the truth weather you or the law believe us is completely up to you. matt cares for my son as if my son is truely his, he changes zackarys diapers, feeds him, plays with him, puts him down for naps and goes to doctors visits with me not only that but he went to the zoo with my youngest brother my son and i, we went and got our pictures taken together as a family. i personally dont think that matt would have told me about it when i got home, went to the er and all if he was trying to hide somethings. whats your opinion on the last sentance do you think that he is hiding something? im not trying to be a bitch to anyone it is just frustrating to hear about this site then see what has been posted about my son and my boyfriend and i. but i do understand where you all are and were coming from when this came out in the journal star…
