Omar Long Is Forgetful

St. Augustine, FloridaRaise your hand if you have ever accidentally locked your keys in your car with the engine still running. I have, and boy, was my face red. The folks at the DMV were probably wondering if it had been a wise decision to issue me a driver’s license that day. Now, raise your hand if you have ever accidentally locked your keys and your 2-year-old child in your car while the engine was still running. For six hours. In the middle of June. What’s this? None of you have ever done that? I didn’t think so. Well, Omar Long did, and little Arianna baked to death.

At 6:00 a.m. on June 14, Arianna’s mother, Lashondia Anderson, strapped the child into her booster seat in the back seat of Long’s Dodge Charger…Long then drove Lashondia to work. After dropping off the baby’s mother, Long returned home, locked and exited the vehicle, entered the house, and fell asleep on the couch. Obviously, Long forgot a couple of steps there. One: he forgot a little something in the back seat. Two: Who the hell just leaves their car running, anyway? Another member of the household woke up at around noon…she became concerned when she didn’t hear little Arianna. Normally, the child wakes her. She ventured into the living room and spotted Long, sound asleep on the couch. The woman continued to search for the child, eventually ending up outside in the driveway. In the back seat of the idling vehicle, still strapped into her booster seat, was Arianna. She was unresponsive and blue. The woman rushed into the home to rouse Long from his slumber. He managed to find a spare key and unlocked the door. Paramedics rushed Arianna to Flagler Hospital, where she was pronounced dead minutes later. Long told police that he didn’t realize the child was in the car. Even if that were the case, and this was nothing more than a very tragic accident, how do you not know that your 2-year-old child isn’t in the house? For 6 fucking hours?

After a two-week investigation and interviews with family members, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Omar Donte Long, the child’s father. Long turned himself into police on FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews and was charged with negligent manslaughter and neglect of a child. Bond has been set at $500,000. (Please note, though the relative told police the car was locked and the engine was running, detectives had not substantiated that).

For some reason, stories like this affect me more than than the beatings. I can’t stand the thought of that child being abandoned and dying alone.

What I want to know is, why aren’t ALL parents whose kids die locked in the car charged? Each one of them deserves it. So often we hear even the police call it a “tragic accident,” or some such shit. Accident my ass. It’s straight-up neglect, period, EVERY DAMN TIME. I have a hard time believing race doesn’t play at least some part in it. Remember the white scientist who left his child in the car to die while he was at work all day at a national lab? I’m pretty sure he wasn’t charged. And the list goes on.

Although I can’t fathom forgetting my child in a car (or anywhere else), there are those who do…obviously. A medic working for my father took off on a much anticipated vacation, drove 2 hours only to find she left her two youngest at home! She left a cart full of groceries in the parking lot next to her car. How do you forget that shit? That’s why she was there! And although she had this knack for forgetting important things, I’ve never worked with a better medic in my life. I just can’t help but be consumed with what goes through their minds or better yet, having the absolute power to clear their minds to where nothing else exists other than breathing in and out. It’s a good that’s an automatic process for some.

I’m curious, at 2 years old, my children were able to get in and out of anything – including trouble. What was the scenario surrounding this situation, I wonder. Did she sleep through the whole thing? At two I’d think that she would (had she been awake and aware) be able to manipulate her way out of that child’s seat and play with the horn or something that would have alerted neighbors or someone that she was in the car.

I have discussed this topic at length as why people can possibly “forget” a child in the very car they are driving. IMO, there are more cases of obvious, knowing neglect than we hear about. This is one, IMO, that falls in the I DON’T FUCKN’ THINK SO….accident my ass, category.

Leaving a child of 2yrs.,(rambunctious, early risers, trust me I have one), he didn’t want to care for the toddler. I bet you he thought, I’ll leave the car running, maybe A/C….(that detail is not mentioned), get some sleep, get baby out later, and no one will be the wiser. Yeah, fucker, you forgot the part where you will then have a dead baby in hand to explain…yeah, that bit you failed to think through.

I hope they throw the fuckn’ book at him and I personally would like to know how he explained this one off to his wife. She was out working, his lazy ass was sleeping on the couch as their daughter cooked.

Rest in peace baby Arianna….sorry you had a selfish, idiot for a father.

I don’t understand how one can judge this man’s intentions just by the picture provided.. The story said nothing about him intentionally neglecting the child..

Let’s say the man was working that night, the mother straps the baby (who very well was sleeping beings it was 6AM) into the car so that Long can drive her to work..

He then drops his girl off at work and does not even think about the baby who is sleeping in the back seat of his car (which is wrong but not malicious).

This puts him on this website? Because the man is careless and his short term memory is shot, he shares the same stage as say the Mallo’s, Mr. Shine or Ms. Bravo?

The loss of a child is tragic.. I just don’t see how his actions compare to the rest of the dirtballs on here..

@slivahalo – Throw the book at him?

“IMO” someone is doing a lot of assuming and jumping to a shit load of their own conclusions..

murphytm81 – are you suggesting Daddy dearest is not at fault? Maybe he didn’t actually SEE Mom strap the baby in, but I imagine she said “goodbye” to her child when she got out. Where did he think their child was? Yes, he is on this website because he is the direct cause of his child’s death through NEGLECT, stupidity, lazyness, etc. It is a well-known fact that when you leave a child in a closed car, in the heat for 6 hours, the baby is going to die. What do you think? “Oops, sorry” – will do it for this loser? Let’s leave you in a closed car in the heat for 6 hours and see if you feel the same way.

It’s understandable that you forget your child in a vehicle for about 5 minutes, but dadgum, 6 hours???? How is it that you don’t wonder about what that toddler is doing so (*ahem*) quietly for 6 hours ??? Where does Omars responsibility begin?? The very second, he got out of the vehicle and did not take the toddler out with him!!
Just imagine what the poor baby went through: Children, are particularly vulnerable because their immature respiratory and circulatory systems do not manage heat as efficiently as an adults does. After a very short time, the skin grows red and dry, the body becomes unable to produce sweat, and heat stroke causes the child to die. First, sweating profusely, then dehydration sets in, then unable to breathe (or pant) because the respiratory system is shutting down, their lips are usually blue, teeth clenched because it’s very painful, not being able to oxygenate the blood by taking a deep breath! And alot of time toddlers, especially, will pull their hair out right before dying!! Gruesome picture??? Yes! Murphytm81: Did you consider Ariannas suffering, at all, before you posted?
I think Omar Long was using the vehicle as a babysitter, ASSHAT!!

I am completely barking up the wrong tree talking to a mother about leaving a baby in a car.. Please believe that I am in NOOO way trying to justify leaving a child to die such a horrible death inside a vehicle.. It does in fact make me sick to my stomach thinking about it..

What I’m saying is the man could have worked that night – woke up @ 6am to drop his wife off, then of course as we know – parked up the car and finished sleeping on the couch..

From the time during the car ride until the time he dozed off on the couch he was neglectful.. It wasn’t like he was sitting up doing drugs or playing video games for 6 hours while the baby baked, that would be cause to be on the website..

This was horrible judgement on his part and I’m not defending him being careless, I’m just saying he doesn’t deserve life without parole or the death penalty for being such a retard..

I know the victim was a helpless child so maybe one percent of men and zero percent of womean will understand what I’m trying to say..

I just don’t get from this story that this man is the monster that people believe he is.. I’d like to see if he has remorse or hear his actual side of the story..

Listen, I know and appreciate all your concerns and opinions. I had them to. I was going to school and saw the story in the papers and said “How could someone do that!” It wasn’t until later that I learned it was a friend of mine, Omar Long. I can’t explain it. what I can tell you is that Omar Long is a good man, a god fearing man, and he is being punished by his own demons far worse tha any of us could imagine. He is they kind of guy that would say the same thing; “Any one who would leave their kid in the car deserves it” and it happened to him. Im not here to start an argument concerning your opinions, but Omar is a good man, a great father, and an awesome ffriend, and I am behind him in this fight. I would just hope that you guys would consider the possibility that is could happen to anyone, especially someone who works day and night to support the children he loves, the family he loves, the family that also says he should not face charges and that this accident was just that. I just felt I had to say something. Thank you all, and to Omar, I love you buddy, we all do, and are with you through this, no matter what the outcome!

Wailing echoed down a corridor outside the St. Johns County courtroom Wednesday night as a jury found that Omar Donte Long was responsible for the heat-exhaustion death of his 23-month-old daughter this summer.

Long, 30, was found guilty of manslaughter, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

He had been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
    [...]

Long, 30, had been on probation for a 2003 charge of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. A condition of that probation was that he not drink. His attorney conceded during his trial that he probably had one alcoholic drink the night of June 13 — the night before his daughter died.
    [...]

Whether Long knew, or should have known, that Anderson had put their daughter in the backseat was the basis of the criminal charge.

“This little girl trusted her father; she deserved better,” Assistant State Attorney Bryan Feigenbaum said in his closing argument Wednesday afternoon.
