Donald Michael Reeser was charged Friday with first-degree murder in connection with the June 18 drowning death of 2-year-old Allie Croom.

District Attorney Greg Mashburn said seeking the death penalty is “a very real possibility.”

Mashburn said the charge was filed Friday after the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. He said the decision also was based on evidence he and his assistants gathered at Lake Stanley Draper, where Allie drowned, and on a “forensic” interview with Reeser’s 5-year-old son, who was at the scene June 18, by a representative of The Care Center.

Allie’s mother, Amber Croom, also was at the lake at the time along with a 4-year-old child, according to a court affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the 5-year-old boy described in great detail Reeser dragging the victim “from a rocky area by her ankles and pulling her into water above her head, putting her underwater numerous times.”

The boy said Reeser told him not to tell what happened to the victim.

The adults brought Allie to Midwest Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Mashburn said he visited the site to compare the boy’s testimony and the medical examiner’s report with what he could find at the scene. He concluded the circumstances did not indicate an accidental dry drowning.

Dry drowning can be the delayed effect of a small amount of water in the lungs and can occur up to 24 hours after an incident.

“We are confident he did witness what he said he saw,” the district attorney said of the boy.

Jonathan Croom said Amber Croom also should be held responsible if she was at the scene. Mashburn said she could possibly be charged.

This is how a two year old had to die who was deathly afraid of water. At this point I’m speechless.

“The way they say they interviewed my son, he tells me it was an interrogation,” Jessica Reeser said. “They repeatedly asked him the same question over and over and over again until he finally said he went along with what they were saying.”

Now, I have a most intelligent 5 year old nephew, but, he wouldn’t call speaking with an interviewer an “interrogation”, unless, of course the 5 year old was accustomed to being “interrogated”….just sayin’
