I was stationed at North Island, CA, which is San Diego. I lived there for 4 years. What I saw there was just outragious. Filth, pushy, and no respect for our country. Even the American Mexicans there treated them like N*&&#$s. I have a friend who is from Ventura, CA, and still lives there. Being the city of Ventura, and being one of the most furtile places in this country to grow crops, there has been a generation of abuse. What was once migration, now is all about staying and having babies, the more the more money. After time, who wants to work anymore. Oxnard is nothing but a town of mexcans, Oxnard is next to Ventura.

I was stationed in San Francisco, and saw numerous Mexican flags flying at job sites and and on cars. You know. After serving in Iraq and country for over 20 yrs, that bothers me. I understand pride, but talk to them, like I have and they will tell you meheco (mexico) is theirs and in your face.

I can go on and on, like look at the jails and the populations of Mexicans that occupy it, legal and illegal. Look at the costs with public assistance, SSI, hospitals, no insurance, property devaluation, and crimes they commit. All I have to say to back that up is go to Dallas county jail and type in a for first name and a for last, and keep going on to the b's a c's, etc. Hold for Ice is what you will see on 80 percent. Go look. I look at it as this one came to rob, this one came to kill, this one came to be in a gang, etc. It's entertaining. Although, here in Texas, they put up with the crap that goes on in the West Coast.

I do see the value of them, and I am not totally heartless, but when I see abuse with no end, no respect for laws, and in your face attitude I get mad. I know that they do good things that fall on deaf ears. Not all are here to mooch, not all. There is just so many you hear about daily that just gets under your skin.

Veronica, The state of this country is questionable. Scary at best. My uncle was here from New Zealand the other day (on his way to Harvard) and he said it isn't much better there. He lives in a community that is a Maori community (no outsiders!!). They speak the language and live the "true" Maori culture. It has come to the point that these people slaughter their own livestock and grow their own produce as well - the whole community shares in this and if one doesn't pull his weight, they have to leave. These are people with real jobs as well. I guess (according to him) New Zealand mocks the U.S. economics - they are just a year behind us. I guess we should all be happy that we live in a place where were can believe the way we want, dress the way we want, women aren't raped and men aren't stoned for being gay.... Maybe, one day, this will be a great country again. Hoefully soone enough for our children to enjoy it.

I don't care what flag they fly, myself. I'm a 3rd generation American, and I've got Croatian flags in my cube here at work. I used to have a Croatian flag on my car, too. In fact, I've never owned an American flag. We're a nation of immigrants, and I think people should be aware of their heritage - even show it off a little. So long as they're upstanding citizens, they're okay in my book. And, like I mentioned earlier, they're even more upstanding on average than actual born-and-raised Americans!

Unfortunately, what is brought to our attention is typically the worst of a group, but that ESPECIALLY pertains to illegal immigrants. You never hear about the illegal who pulls a child out of a burning building or gives a ton to charity - not because they don't do it - but because they don't want attention drawn to them!

Because my boyfriend is in construction, I've gotten to know quite a few illegal immigrants in my time and they're just like anyone else in America, except a bit more difficult to understand and a little more hardworking. :P

I see what you mean. :) I agree that they come here for the increased work opportunities , but unfortunately the reason there is so much work for them is that so many employers jump at the chance to pay them next to nothing, and they are often exploited. It's a complicated issue for sure, just food for thought...I also think watching the possibility of real, genuine healthcare reform slip away has made me a little less patriotic as of late...as happy as I was to see Obama elected it's clear there are forces in this country so entrenched, and so against the public good, that real change may be nearly impossible. If we ship all the corporate lobbyists off to Mexico, I'd be happy to take an equal number of Mexicans in their place! LOL.

April, I see where you are coming from, I really do, but I think the reality for these people is often quite different. They ARE here for a reason, but that reason is often that they have no other choice. Then, once they get here, they are often exploited and treated like dirt by their unscrupulous employers who know they have no other prospects. They are often here so that they can send money back to their families. They are just trying to survive. I can't say I see a problem with them flying the flag of their native country, doesn't affect me in the least.

I agree with George Carlin -- I've never understood the concept of being "proud" of your country, or proud of anything that is nothing more than an accident of birth. Pride should be reserved for things that you DO in your life, and of course serving your country fits the bill. Doesn't mean I don't think our country isn't worth fighting for, not at all, it's just a different perspective. So from that standpoint, I don't really understand being "proud" of being from Mexico, either. I just don't think it affects me or anyone else when they fly their own flag. I don't HAVE to understand. I do think nationalism is a slippery slope, though.
