The paid obituary for 5-year-old Carly Elizabeth Sawyer marks the passing of "God's newest angel" with a reference to her father. It highlights the man's military service and how his child once followed him across America. Left unsaid was that same man, 24-year Joshua Sawyer, formerly of Latham, is charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly tortured his child in Virginia last month – and that the child's step-mother, Brandy Sawyer is charged with first-degree murder.

The paid obituary appeared in the Times Union on Thursday. It mentioned that a memorial service for the child will be held at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of Assumption. It then mentions relatives "in addition to her father" – but never mentions her actual mother or her maternal grandparents. "Carly grew up traveling extensively throughout the country as a result of her father's military service," it stated. "She was a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece, who brightened everyone's day and lifted the spirits of all who knew Carly and who came in contact with her. Her beautiful smile and way will be forever missed and never forgotten."

I’m sorry But the justice system in North Carolina sucks, Go back and read after he was granted her how many reports were reported against him in the state of North Carolina ummmm the number is 24 now tell me the money wasn’t a helping hand with the ruling….

um, how you YOU know Josh had a “high class lawyer”? Josh being in the Marine Corps at the time was something that usually KEEPS a child in the mothers care because of deployments and training OPs, so there had to be something else going on with the mother that a judge would grant a deployable Marine custody of the child – reguardless of money.

You hit the nail on the head, they did have the money to fight this..
Carly’s mom did fight for her baby..She actually did take baby Carly and Run with her when she realized her baby was being messed with and He had his high class lawyer, and the only reason she went back when the courts ordered her to was because she was ordered too and Her being a mother and thinking that the courts would never grant him custody she believed in the system at the time and never dreamed they would put her back in his care..But little did she know that the North Carolina justice system runs on money and money alone, it is ashame that they cared so little about Carly that they did not pay attention to what really was for her best interest.. I pray that them two will have done to them that they did to baby Carly, but no matter what happens to them behind bars will never NEVER equal to what they did to this little angel…

i agree.. but most of [deifinitely not all] the abuse was probably coming from Brandy and she probably had poor Carly so scared of her that she couldnt say anything to her father. i do agree though, as a parent you SHOULD notice when something just isnt right with your child. i grew up in a household where my step mother beat me and abused me in many different ways and i can tell you now, looking back on everything.. my father didnt know HALF of what went on when he wasnt home and i was so scared of HER being that she was home with us all day that i didnt dare say anything to anyone about it. i just find it so hard to believe.. but in no way, shape or form am i defending him because Carly was truly an amazing little girl that was taken far far too early from this earth.

as for starvation as the death penalty for josh and brandy — brandy would probably hang herself after missing just one meal cuz by the looks of her she surely hasnt missed any. sick sick sick

To whoever defends him – if you even have half a brain to think about this, you know there is no possible way in hell that a parent would not notice his own child starving, not to mention all the other abuse! My kids think they are starving and will loudly let everyone know if a meal is a bit late – a child that is actually starving – what a sad and horrible state to be in! Withholding meals as punishment?! Sadistic and evil. If it was really just the evil stepmother and he wasn’t in on it, and he actually had any real fatherly feelings toward his own child, he wouldn’t allow it for one second. Tears are way. way too late. Death penalty by starvation and torture is the only fitting punishment for these too monsters.

I also want to add, I have a feeling this has ALOT to do with Brandy. Josh barely even yelled at Carly before he met her. I am not, in ANY way, making excuses for him because it says he KNEW that it was going on and it was punishment… he shoulda left her ass back when we all told him to and MAYBE, just MAYBE Carly would still be alive. I just find it so hard to believe that after watching Josh get so emotional over his ex taking carly and fighting as hard as he did to get her back that he would become such a monster. Either way, justice will be served. And SHAME ON HIS LAWYER for pulling the “he’s a Marine Veteran” card to try to get him bail!

Well, I knew these people personally and I am SHOCKED to hear about this! Joshua was in the same unit as my ex husband in the USMC and we used to babysit Carly often. She was the sweetest little thing! She loved her little baby dolls, she used to put them in the stroller and push them around and when I had my first son she would sit next to him on the couch and give him kisses. Brandy I didnt talk to very often, but I wouldve NEVER expected this from them, it just makes me sick and I hope they both get the death penalty for it! RIP my sweet Carly.

In the last months of her life, Carly Sawyer was put into a cardboard box as punishment.

Sometimes she was tied up with mesh netting. Other times, her father, Joshua Sawyer, and stepmother, Brandy Sawyer, withheld food, or spanked her with a belt.

Chesapeake police filed search warrants Tuesday that provided new details about the murder cases against Carly’s father and stepmother. The affidavit for the warrant – which police use to convince a magistrate that they have probable cause to search private property – notes that Joshua gave a statement to police.

In the last days of her life, Carly arrived at a hospital with cuts, bruises and burns on her body and ligature marks on her wrists.

She was unconscious, and further examination revealed she had no brain activity, police have said.

The Sawyers told police that Brandy Sawyer had spanked Carly, and the girl had thrown herself to the floor. Later, Joshua Sawyer admitted to “using netting material as restraints, restricting the child to a cardboard box as a form of discipline, withholding food and spankings,” according to the warrant.

Handwritten, a detective added “with a belt” with his signature next to it.

The medical examiner who looked at Carly determined the cause of her death was blunt-force trauma, although contributing factors included starvation, ligature restraint and medical neglect.

“Starvation doesn’t just come in a matter of a week or more,” Kimery said. “They’ve both done something to do this to her. It’s not just a one-time incident.”

Police seized two cardboard boxes, one bloody paper towel, a roll of blue mesh, a digital video camera, two insurance documents for Carly, nine photos of the girl, and a black leather belt from the two-story home that the Sawyers were leasing on Oliver Avenue, according to the warrant.

Police also searched for computers and computer equipment, although none are listed among the items seized.

My grandbaby is doing 100% better now and is no longer with her “parents”
We are fighting for custody of her and the other three siblings.

This father had to have had knowlegde of the abuse, he is trying to
act as if the Step-mom did it all without him knowing. I Call bullshit!
However none of us live in a bubble, some other person had to have seen
some red-flag.
STOP the abuse GET INVOLVED it is YOUR business.
