Faith Mascolino Burned Alive In Patrol Car Explosion

Tucson, AZ – Faith Mascolino, 45 and a mother of five, was pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving. A second officer arrived to assist and pulled behind the first officer. Mascolino was eventually arrested, handcuffed and placed in the back of the second unit while the two officers stood outside. At that point, 28-year-old Robert Gallivan, driving a 2004 Nissan, drifted into the emergency lane and struck the back of the patrol car Mascolino was sitting in. The patrol car burst into flames and Mascolino burned alive.

The Nissan slammed into the patrol car containing Mascolino, which burst into flames, then crashed into the first patrol car, which slammed into Mascolino’s SUV. The Nissan then took to the air, soaring over the guardrail, where it, too, caught fire. Officers were able to rescue Gallivan, but due to the intense flames and the extreme damage to the patrol car, they couldn’t do the same for Mascolino. Robert Gallivan, 24, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. As of yet, it is unknown whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Hehh…wouldn’t that be a strange twist? The results of the ongoing investigation will decide what, if any, charges Gallivan will face.

Mascolino was honored last month by 94.9 Mix FM as part of their yearly promotion around Mother’s Day. Mascolino’s daughter had submitted a letter to the radio station stating that her mom was a “remarkable woman” whose “kids come first and she has been left to do most everything on her own.” Mascolino received a phone call from the radio crew to congratulate her on being “Mom of the day.”

Back in the day, when I was young and free, I was in NOLA for Mardi Gras.  We, drunk off of our asses, split the group into 2 different cabs to go back to the hotel.

We made it back to the hotel and wondered what was taking the other cab so long.  (This was when only the rich and elite had cell phones.)  Turns out our friends cab was hit by a , you guessed it, DRUNK DRIVER.  no one was hurt though.

This is so tragic.  The officers thought they were saving a drunk driver from herself and from hurting others, only to have this happen.  Ironic.

If you read the source article, the Ford Crown Victoria has an innate defect with its fuel tank that can lead to an explosion when exposed to a high-speed rear-end impact.  The Police Dept. decided to invest in fire-control systems, which do not always deploy.  WTF?  Police Departments, get your brave cops new cars, already!

Exactly.  The very first thing I thought of upon reading this article.  I understand budget constraints.  That said, the liability the municipality faces by not replacing these vehicles is something that should not be taken lightly.  Especially given the fact that they run the risk of being struck from behind while pulling someone over in the “emergency lane”.  The fact now, that a citizen was killed while being detained in a vehicle make/model  that is known to have a propensity to burst into flames when struck from behind, has opened the governing body to a huge lawsuit.

Incredibly tragic, and what an unexpected way to go. I wonder if she was under the influence as a first time offense or an ongoing problem. By the sounds of it she might have been a single mother carrying the weight of raising 5 children and that she was congratulated on being Mother of the Day says her children loved her….how sad for all of them.
    Rest in peace Faith Mascolino

How horrible, she was wrong, but did not deserve to die.  Those poor kids, I hope time will help heal them.  Very tragic.

It looks like either sundown, or Sunup by the shadows from the cars in the pics.  So at the time of impact, it could have been either late afternoon, or early morning hours when the arrest and subsequent crash actually happened.
Either way that was a hard day or night of drinking for Ms. Mascolino, but what a horrible way to die- NO one deserves this.  The officers put people in the back of the patrol cars to protect them from the elements or from things like this that could occur.

I have been in LE for about 15 years and it is very rare that you actually hear of a fire or explosion of this type in the Crown Vic, that would not have normally happened if a vehicle were struck in this manner- in the area of the fuel tank.

My heart goes out to everyone involved, especially her children, who obviously loved and thought the world of her!

Where are all the people who scream bloody murder over drunk drivers?
Isn’t this what you wanted? Maybe this other drunk saved an INNOCENT person from getting killed.

Yeah, that’s what the lawyers and the families will do. Blame Ford or blame the cops. Maybe they will also blame Nissan for not having a soft enough bumper. How about the state for not having wide enough shoulders to pull off onto? Don’t blame the drunk driver(s?) or the idiot who slammed into the gas tank at a high speed causing the explosion though.  American justice.

She was NOT a single mother. 2 of her children are 28…grown and on their own. The other 3 children are 16, 12, & 4. They were at home with their dad/step-dad while Faith was out. People go out, they drink. No one said she was DRUNK. She left behind a husband and 5 children, plus many more that loved her and were blessed because she touched their lives. People need to stop being haters!! This was a tragedy. God Speed Faith.

I’m right here. Why would I want this woman to burn alive in a car? I don’t wish physical death on people who drive drunk, I just do not want them on the road. I want stiffer penalties for those who get caught and I want murder charges placed on those who kill people while driving drunk. I don’t want them to burn alive in a car after they had already been arrested and taken off the street.

I’m sorry VadersMom!  Like I said earlier, she did wrong, but did not deserve this.  Everyone makes mistakes and I’m sorry that her last moments on life were like that.  I will keep you, her  friends and famiy in my thoughts and prayers…..stay strong.

How awful. I think I used to know the Driver of the Nissan (Robert Gallivan). I worked with him back in 2006 at the Census Bureau. He always seemed like a really friendly & decent guy- not the kind of guy who would be prone to wreckless driving or driving under the influence. Too bad….
