Alex Arellano Refused To “Throw Up The Crown”

ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews, IL- On the first of May, 15-year old Alex Arellano was walking with several girls to a friend’s home. Two individuals on bicycles stopped Alex and asked him what he was about, referring to his gang affiliation. Alex told them he was about nothing and they rode away. A short time later, the two on bikes returned along with a Ford Mustang containing a group of Latin King gang members wielding baseball bats. They demanded Alex to “throw up the crown,” or show the gang sign for Latin Kings, and, when Alex refused, they began to beat him into the ground with the bats.

Edgar Silva

Edgar Silva

Alex was able to get up, but when he tried to escape from the attackers, he was run down by the driver of the Mustang and then he was beaten with the bats again. Alex escaped once more, and ran into the back yard of a vacant home. The gang members followed him, continued to beat him, and then shot him once in the head. A witness to the beating called 911 and said they seen Jovanny Martinez, 15, walk from the vacant home. Officers found Martinez about 10 minutes later approximately two blocks from the scene. Martinez fled when he seen the officers and, tossing a gun as he ran, which was later recovered. He was arrested and cited in a juvenile petition for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Around 7 p.m., Alex’s uncle, Juan Tirado, received a phone call from one of Alex’s friends alerting him of the assault. Tirado rushed to the area where Alex was last seen, but found no sign of his nephew. When he and other family members asked the police for help in the search for his nephew, the officers told them to go home and file a missing person’s report with the police in their own neighborhood. An officer arrived at their home around midnight that evening, and made the report. Around 2 a.m. on May 2, someone smelled something burning near the vacant home and believed someone was barbecuing. It was not until after 2 p.m. that same day when the family returned to the neighborhood to hand out fliers with Alex’s picture that his body was discovered. When a family member noticed police gathered at an area nearby, it was then that Alex’s severely beaten and burned body was identified. The medical examiner’s office said Alex died from a gunshot wound to the head, but would not say whether the boy was dead before his body was burned. A shell casing found in the yard and the bullet taken from Alex’s body both matched the Martinez’s gun. Martinez also had blood found on his pants which was an exact match to Alex’s DNA.

Jovanny Martinez was charged with first-degree murder and officers now have a second teen in custody. 18-year old Edgar Silva has also been charged with first-degree murder, but how he was involved with the crime has not been released. Martinez has a prior delinquency charge for unlawful use of a weapon and was sentenced to 18 months probation. His attorney asked the judge to deny the prosecutors’ request for no bail and stated,”He is a young boy, he comes from a poor family.” Thankfully, Martinez was denied bail. Those who knew Alex Arellano described him as a shy, funny kid who liked to laugh. Alex, who had a learning disability, was pulled from the Chicago Discovery Academy last fall by his family due to several threats he received from others. His family hoped to move to another neighborhood where he could attend another school, but could not do so because of financial problems. They believed keeping him home was the best way to keep him safe. His family and the police are now asking anyone with information on any others who may have been in this brutal murder of Alex Arellano to please contact the Area One Division at 312-747-8380. “Somebody had to have heard or seen something,” said Tirado. “Just think of it as if it was one of your own.”

What does coming from a poor family have to do with it? its first degree murder?? that pisses me off.

I had to wonder when this story broke last month whether or not he really was in a gang. And finding articles that found his myspace account and saved a picture of him throwing up a possible gang sign is even sadder.

I never understood why someone would feel the need to ask someone they don’t even know “what they claim”. Then proceed to beat them and kill them because they answer with nothing. I would hope his family find peace, and they find whomever else was involved in this teens brutal death.

Well I came from a poor AND dysfunctional family so I guess I should be a homicidal maniac!!! well im a maniac but not homicidal :-) but seriously that is super lame to blame your actions on your upbringing…Even if your abused for years that should give you even more reason NOT to hurt innocent people.  There goes some more fresh meat for the pokey.

fucking cops, don’t want to waste their time, with poor people without representation, wonder how they would have reacted if it had been the local bank president or some rich realtor with connections asking for help

Lots of times, these younger kids will do crap like this just because they think it is “cool”.  No real affiliation, just something to post.  Lots of them don’t realize what the implications are or oculd be.  This little guy seemed to want to stay out of thier way and knew they were trouble.

Gangs are retarded. The lack of self-esteem one must suffer from to be willing to rob, beat and kill people JUST to fit in… JUST to feel excepted and loved…

    It’s absolutely pathetic.

I hope these pathetic assholes end up in a Supermax prison where they can’t mingle and wear their stupid gang affiliation like a badge of honor.

Amen, sister.  I used to run with a gang of Big Wheel thugs.  One time I rode the Big Wheel in the house and my mom took it away and sold it in a garage sale.  She said I was too big for it (what did she know??).  The other kids turned their backs on me because I was a dork with no ride…  From that point on, I learned that gang life was not for me.

    LMAO! There’s still time, April!

All my neighborhood friends have gotten bikes and are strongly encouraging me to do the same so we can ride around the neighborhood like we’re 12 again (which would be convenient, as we all live just a matter of blocks from one another). When I heard about this, my first thought was, “Do they make Big Wheels for adults?” How hilarious would it be if the boys were all on their manly-lookin’ mountain bikes, with me next to them on some brightly colored plastic trike with tassles, my arms reaching way up to grab the handles and my legs peddling feverishly out in front of me in an attempt to keep up…

Man… I’d totally rock a big people Big Wheel.

Yes you would.  I can see it now….  Hair in pigtails with a Blowpop hangin’ out of the side of your mouth.  D&G sunglasses with a big lipstick smile.  All the boys wondering how Athena got so friggin’ cool.  I love it.  You would be my hero.  You might even get me to go back to my gang ways – with you as my leader.

I’d be honored. We could sip on bottles of wine disguised in brown bags stashed between our legs as we peddled along like crazy, sparkled streamers flowing in the wind. A girlfriend of mine has a purse that looks kinda like an 80’s boombox with actual speakers that her iPod hooks into. She could get a Big Wheel and hang it from one of her handles. We’d have tunes.

Actually, now that I look into it, someone does make Big Wheels for adults. I might actually have to get in on that.

I hate gangs. All the requirements needed to join a gang, is no brains, or self esteem.

When I lived in the East Coast, I was in the 4th grade. I remember that there were several “big kids” in our classroom. They were idiots left back a couple of years. They were about 11 or 12, and still in the 4th grade. One day one of those morons came up to me and a boy student. He invited us to his “meetings”. He said that we needed to remember that if we missed one meeting, they would beat us. That alone was enough for me to know that I did notr belong there, but the boy student did agree to attend. That was the last time I saw him in school, and shortly after that I was transfered to another school.

RIP Alex Arrellano…as for the gang….rot in hell for the rest of eternity.

    Whew, brings back good memories.

    I am here, in Chicago.
Most of my bloggers in one of our local papers, speculate that Alex was a gang member.
Even if he was in a gang, no one deserved to die in the manner in which this child did.

Where he lived is notorious gang territory,
Where you may see on a daily basis, someone running down the street with a gun.
Where he was killed is also a notorious gang territory.

His myspace page does offer alittle insight on his gang affiliation, but,
    Who knows?
    Who cares?
The point is,  Alex was treated worst than animals at a slaughter house.
I didn’t know this kid, but if it were my son,
    Gang affiliation or not,
There would be hell to pay.

Now, you all know how gangs are such cowards.
2 pieces of shit had to leave and go get more guys?
    For such a little guy?
The 2 bike bitches could have kicked his ass,
And rode off into the sunset.
Those 2 motherfuckers should be also charged with facilitation of murder.

    That’s my thinking.

    Peace

April and Athena – you guys crack me up!  What visuals I was having of you on your “low riders”… omg!  I can see heads turning now.. too funny!

As for this story – it makes me sick.  This “gang” has forever branded themselves as pussies.  To beat down a 15 year old kid was bad enough – but to then RUN him down, SHOOT him down and BURN him up?  That should make anyone “affiliated” with these murderous cowards ashamed to know them – and ashamed of their “affiliation” as well.  What kind of threat did this child pose?  Really??  NONE!

Fuck the war on drugs and smoking – we need a war on gangs!!  Round ‘em all up, ship ‘em off to the desert to fight and kill each other.  Last one standing gets to eat his own gun.  I’m so fucking tired of the whole lot of them!  They are failures who need to bring everyone else down, too.  Alone they are NOTHING – so they think they all need to band together to be something —- well, NOTHING times 100 still equals NOTHING morons!

RIP Alex.  I hope this family gets justice and these assholes get what they deserve – and then some.

No one EVER sees a thing when there is a gang involved.  They are too scared or worried about retribution to say anything.   That is why this kind of crap continues.  When they go to prison they will already have other members of their gang there.  It will be like a fucking reunion.  Their only concern in prison will be a rival gang member….which I hope these POS run into in the shower…with no one else around….and get what they gave to Alex…..and I hope it takes hours and hours for them to get it!

Fuck the war on drugs and smoking – we need a war on gangs!!

The most effective weapon is called “a father”. If there’s actually one in the house, odds of gang affiliation plummet. Unfortunately, it’s something in short supply in low-income households.

Of course, our government is intent on providing everything else to low income households. Maybe we could just pass some funding for subsidized Eharmony accounts for any single mothers under $40,000/year?
