– I don’t normally like to cover these types of stories because they are getting enough press already, but the fact that they still do not even have a suspect got my interest and I figured I would go ahead and get this one posted. I’m sure everyone has heard by now, on Wednesday, an intruder walked into a beach front home and stabbed a pregnant woman to death, along with her husband, while their two children were in the home.
Ventura County Chief Deputy Larry Carpenter said that the killer entered the house through a sliding glass door at around 10:30 that evening. He was wearing a black jumpsuit and a motorcycle helmet and attacked the 5-month pregnant Davina Husted first, while she was in the kitchen. The couple’s 9-year-old son was watching American Idol and immediately ran to get his older sister who was sleeping in another room. Brock Husted then ran out of his bedroom when he heard his wife screaming. Both children discovered the bodies of their parents, and ran to a neighbor for help. The couple had both been stabbed about 10 times in the torso.
Nothing was stolen and the murder weapon was left at the scene. Police initially began focusing on the transient population that populates nearby, but no arrests have been made. “There’s no answers as to why this happened,” said Scott Husted, Brock’s brother. “It’s a horrible situation and there’s a killer out there that killed a man and his wife – his pregnant wife – with two small children in the home.” Brock owned a successful wrought iron business and described as a family man with no enemies, his wife was described as a role model to her children and active in their school activities.
I understand the police targeting the homeless community, as the house is in a gated community with easy access from the beach. It makes sense to start there first. But the motorcycle helmet thing gets me and smacks a bit of a targeted murder, although as of right now there is absolutely no proof of that. In some ways, I just kind of want it to be anything but a random attack carried out for no particular reason. Seems as if he didn’t want to be identified or even possibly recognized, you know? But with the stories we report on here, I wouldn’t be too shocked if it did turn out to be some crazy asshole who thought they were killing Satan or something.

Update: 10-29-09 6 months later and still no arrests, although there has been an update. New clues are leading investigators to believe that it wasn’t a random killing and that the couple was specifically targeted. “They didn’t lead very simple, basic lives. It was a very complex set of circumstances, but other than that, I can’t say anything,” said Capt. Ron Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

The motorcycle helmet thing is not sitting right with me either. Nothing was taken and the kids were unharmed? I doubt if this was just a random act of crazy. I hope they get some leads soon and find who did this. Those poor kids got one helluva long hard road ahead of them.

Not the usual getup of a transient, but who knows. Someone had a plan. Maybe someone who wanted to kill just to see if they could do it? Like Andrew Busskohl attempted? No reason other than because he wanted to.

No doubt that it could be random, an act of opportunity. Like the investigators stated, the killer could have just been attracted to the light and the open door. Who knows. Maybe the motive was rape or robbery, but after the struggle with the two, the killer ran off.
But still, the motorcycle helmet and leaving the weapon at the scene just seems so, I dunno, “off” I guess.

Sketchy!
While this is pretty fuckin’ tragic either way, I would hate to hear that the act was determined to be random. That can do some real damage to a community.

This smacks of a targeted murder to me. Leaving the kids unharmed…wonder who stands to profit from their deaths? Affairs on either side? Other family members beneficiaries or gain control of $$$ through getting custody of the children?? Hope they find who did this…random or not….it is tragic and totally reprehensible!

I don’t think it’s random. Sure you have access from the beach, but that late at night it would be dark and hard to see. There are rocks that you could trip on if you don’t know what you’re looking for or where you’re going…IMO

I think this crime smacks of vengeance. The killer disguises himself, kills the woman, then the husband, does not touch the children, and leaves the weapon. I think the husband’s death was just because he was there and tried to stop it. Leaving the weapon behind is like saying “I’m done.” If it were random, he would have taken his weapon (unless it was a knife from their home) with him because he might need it for his next conquest. Just my 2 cents worth of psychological bs.
The poor children to have seen, heard, and witnessed it all! This is horrific.

They didn’t. Early reports said the did, but that turned out to be false. The son saw the intruder (he is where the description came from) but they hid in a room during the attacks. However it is being reported that they did see their parents after they had been murdered and before they ran out of the house.

Californians should expect something to be banned because of this. Either sliding glass doors, knives or being a transient.
Doesn’t sound like a hit. Most don’t come to the house and use a knife out of the drawer. You put yourself in way too much risk. Such as if the guy was a knuckle dragging Neanderthal and had a *gasp* firearm readily accessible.
Sounds like the perp wanted to get his rape on, or maybe some robbery. When it went south with the murders, he beat feet. Another fine upstanding citizen who should be drug down the freeway behind a truck.

Nah man. This is the work of someone who didn’t like these folks. Well more than disliked. Hmmm, maybe the father was into something that no one knew about. Gambling, maybe borrowed money for something and didn’t pay back in time? This definitely sounds like a target murder. He probably had to kill both adults so that this murder can remain annonymous. Someone was not doing something right, and if one of the adults would have survived, they would have been able to identify the killer.
I feel bad for the children definitely. It must be a horrible, horrible thing to see your parents go that way.

That pic shows just how “accessible” gated communities are– Especially one with just a key-card and not an actual guard station. Motorcycle could go right around a “gate” or in thru the unmonitored ”exit” side. and LOOK at how packed in those homes are! Yard? WHat yard? Privacy? What privacy?

Update to story added. Investigators have enough clues for them to believe that this was not an act of opportunity, but rather a targeted one.
