VENTURA, CaliforniaKing of California reviews – I don’t normally like to cover these types of stories because they are getting enough press already, but the fact that they still do not even have a suspect got my interest and I figured I would go ahead and get this one posted. I’m sure everyone has heard by now, on Wednesday, an intruder walked into a beach front home and stabbed a pregnant woman to death, along with her husband, while their two children were in the home.

Ventura County Chief Deputy Larry Carpenter said that the killer entered the house through a sliding glass door at around 10:30 that evening. He was wearing a black jumpsuit and a motorcycle helmet and attacked the 5-month pregnant Davina Husted first, while she was in the kitchen. The couple’s 9-year-old son was watching American Idol and immediately ran to get his older sister who was sleeping in another room. Brock Husted then ran out of his bedroom when he heard his wife screaming. Both children discovered the bodies of their parents, and ran to a neighbor for help. The couple had both been stabbed about 10 times in the torso.

Nothing was stolen and the murder weapon was left at the scene. Police initially began focusing on the transient population that populates nearby, but no arrests have been made. “There’s no answers as to why this happened,” said Scott Husted, Brock’s brother. “It’s a horrible situation and there’s a killer out there that killed a man and his wife – his pregnant wife – with two small children in the home.” Brock owned a successful wrought iron business and described as a family man with no enemies, his wife was described as a role model to her children and active in their school activities.

I understand the police targeting the homeless community, as the house is in a gated community with easy access from the beach. It makes sense to start there first. But the motorcycle helmet thing gets me and smacks a bit of a targeted murder, although as of right now there is absolutely no proof of that. In some ways, I just kind of want it to be anything but a random attack carried out for no particular reason. Seems as if he didn’t want to be identified or even possibly recognized, you know? But with the stories we report on here, I wouldn’t be too shocked if it did turn out to be some crazy asshole who thought they were killing Satan or something.

Update: 10-29-09 6 months later and still no arrests, although there has been an update. New clues are leading investigators to believe that it wasn’t a random killing and that the couple was specifically targeted. “They didn’t lead very simple, basic lives. It was a very complex set of circumstances, but other than that, I can’t say anything,” said Capt. Ron Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
