Portland, OregonThe 911 calls started pouring in on SaturdaySaturday reviewsSaturday reviews at 1:00 a.m. Residents on both sides of the Willamette river heard screams and a splash coming from the area of the Sellwood Bridge. Terrifying, hair-raising screams. Police quickly fanned out on both sides of the river, trying to track down the source. The Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and rescue boats…residents joined in the search with their boats. At 2:10 a.m., resident Dave Haag made a shocking discovery.

Amanda Jo Stott-Smith

Amanda Jo Stott-Smith

“What we came up on were two children in the water,” Haag said. “One was face down, the other on her back — flailing, gasping for air. We pulled them out.” Sadly, rescue came too late for 4-year-old Eldon Jay Rebhan Smith. An autopsy confirmed death by drowning. The little girl was admitted to a local hospital in serious condition, but by SundaySunday reviewsSunday reviews, her physical condition had improved significantly. Haag said that, based on the position of both children in the water, there’s “no doubt” the girl had hung onto her little brother throughout the ordeal. The children had been in the freezing cold water for nearly an hour after being tossed from 75-feet up. Can you imagine the impact from 75-feet? Holy hell…

Police were able to identify those children and, later, find their mother because of a missing-person’s report which had been filed by their father. Their father, Jason Smith, who shared custody with Amanda, filed that report on FridayFriday reviewsFriday reviews…just hours before the bridge incident. The two were married, but legally separated.

Several hours after the children were pulled from the river, officers caught up with their mother, 31-year-old Amanda Jo Stott-Smith, in a parking garage in downtown Portland. When officers approached, she threatened to jump off of the 9-story building. If she really, truly wanted to commit suicide, she should have taken the plunge into the Willamette and left the kids out of it. Bitch. Unfortunately(?), officers were able to thwart her pussy little suicide attempt, and slapped on the cuffs. She is being charged with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. She will be arraigned on those charges Tuesday afternoon. Detectives said she has other children who are in protective custody and that she has a prior police record. While police aren’t confirming the children were actually thrown, they do say the two young children “plunged from the bridge into the Willamette River, and that Stott-Smith is responsible.”

Geeze, I cant  tell you how sad this story make me feel.  I am very thankful for Dave Haag and Cheryl Robb saving the little girl, she wouldn’t have lasted much longer.  Its a real miracle she is still alive and it breaks my heart Eldon didnt make it.

I hope  Amanda rots  in jail the rest of her life and she doesn’t get off by pleading insanity.

Here is David and Cheryl’s  account of what happened,  in another news video,  Cheryl said she saw a big hand print on Eldons face.

David Haag, who lives in a floating home north of the Sellwood Bridge, says he did what anybody would do. He said they got home around midnight, then he drove to a grocery store in Sellwood to buy cat food.

By the time Haag returned home, he saw police on the river. They were responding to neighbors’ reports of screams coming from the water. Haag said he heard moans but wasn’t sure whether it was an animal or a human. The sound kept moving north, he recalled, a few degrees at a time.

“I went and got Cheryl up,” Haag said. The couple got in their boat and followed the sound to a red buoy mid river.
“Cheryl couldn’t get the boat close enough to get the girl. So I said, the heck with it,” and dived in. “While I was getting the girl, Cheryl says, ‘My God, there’s another one.’”

“Cheryl’s a mom and a grandmother, and she kept rubbing the little girl, and saying, ‘Hang on, you’re gonna make it,’” according to Legree.  The couple pulled both children into the boat and took them to a dock at the Oregon Yacht Club about 2:10 a.m. Saturday, according to police reports.

At the south end of the moorage where Haag lives, neighbor Jody Legree said the rescue took a toll on Haag and Robb. Haag said he can’t shake the experience. “You still have the visuals. The little boy … .”

That’s amazing.  We need more people like this.

I think there should be a law, that whenever some selfish asshole goes to pull a murder-suicide, yet doesn’t quite make it on the suicide part, they should be left in a small room with a shit load of pills.  and videos of their victims playing on repeat.  let them finish the job.

I have come to the conclusion that the little boy was probly unconscious, the whole time he was in the water. either from the slap Amanda gave him or the fall or a combination of both.  Most of the people said they heard a girl screaming and crying out for help.  I would like to think that the people calling out to her, helped to keep her struggling and to stay afloat.

Pati and Dan Gallagher, both 50, live in a town home near the Sellwood Bridge. They were sitting on their patio, several hours before daybreak, silence, a splash and then a little girl screaming. “At first it was, ‘Help me,’” Gallagher said of the screams. “Then it went to anguishing horrible screams.”
Pati Gallagher called 9-1-1, while her husband and a woman out on a river trail yelled out, asking the girl to tell them her location. The operator on the other line could hear the girl, said Gallagher, who made three emergency calls by the time the incident ended.
The brother and sister began to float downstream, the girl yelling for help. “It’s tough to get the sounds out of my head — the screaming, the splash,” Dan Gallagher said.
“How she’s not dead is a miracle,” said Sgt. Marshman, who has witnessed people take their lives by jumping off the bridge south of downtown.

Police are in awe of the girl, whom Marshman describes as “tiny for a 7-year-old,” and of how she was able to survive the long fall and withstand more than 30 minutes in the cold Willamette.

I wonder if the police  used “GPS”  to find her location?? They did talk to the Ex and family members, so they could have got her cell number.  The location they found her at was interesting .  It was on top of a 9 story parking garage , 2 blocks from the Multnomah County courthouse.  Wonder if she was sitting up there trying to decide to take her life or turn her self in??

“Stott-Smith was found this morning shortly after 10 a.m. on the ninth floor of a parking garage at Fifth Avenue and Yamhill Street, police said. When officers approached her, she attempted to jump off the parking garage, and they stopped her, police said. “

Jason F. Smith the kids Bio-dad released a statement to the press today.
The children’s father Jason F. Smith issued a statement through his lawyer Laura Schantz Monday afternoon. “He’s extremely distraught,” Schantz said.  At the same time, she said, “His daughter is doing well and he says it’s a miracle. He’s extremely grateful to all the people who called 911 and especially to the couple who rescued his daughter and son from the river.”  “He wants to give them his extreme appreciation,” Schantz said. “His whole family is extremely appreciative for what they did in saving her life.”
The children’s mother, Amanda Jo Stott-Smith, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to be arraigned. Stott-Smith, 31, faces accusations of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder.  The father had physical custody of the children, Schantz said. She would not comment about why they were with their mother.
State child welfare officials are working with Portland police. A spokesman for the Oregon Department of Human Services could not say whether there had been past involvement between child protective services and the family.

One of the Amanda’s , older kids dad spoke to the press today, she has one  other child as far as I know.  Maybe that one was handed over to the dad as well ???  Geeze she fucked up all kinds of peoples lifes, selfish bitch. Her daughter lost both her brother and her mom on the same day.  What a terrible thing for the other kids to hear about.

In late February, shortly before separating from her husband, Stott-Smith relinquished custody of an older son from a previous relationship, according to court records.
Nathan Beck, the father of that son, said Stott-Smith was not opposed to the arrangement, and the two simply agreed it was a good time for the boy “to live with his dad.”
Beck said he and Stott-Smith, who were never married, have had regular contact through the years. He said Stott-Smith has been a full-time mother. He declined comment on questions related to her performance as a mother and her financial picture.
He said their son is aware of the crime his mother is accused of committing. “It’s hard for him and his entire family,” Beck said.

“according to court records. Amanda had Kids with 3 different men.  The Division of Child Support had to take 2 dads to court to establish paternity. She took out restraining orders against 2 of those men (twice against one of them). A string of debt collections and parking/speeding tickets from here to 1999.”

A Washington County judge today gave the state of Oregon temporary custody of The little girl, some intersting alligations of domestic violence and alcohol abuse were brought up about the Bio-dad, Jason Smith.

A Washington County judge today gave the state of Oregon temporary custody of a 7-year-old girl who was pulled from the Willamette River early Saturday morning . Their mother, Amanda Stott-Smith, was arraigned today in Multnomah County court on aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder charges.
Washington County Juvenile Court Judge Michele Rini awarded custody to the state citing historical allegations against the girl’s father, Jason Smith, of domestic violence and alcohol abuse. But Smith’s attorney Laura Schantz, said “We feel it’s completely safe for (the girl) to return home.”
In addition, she ordered that a safety study be done before deciding whether to return the girl to Smith, who attended this afternoon’s hearing and clutched a small, stuffed toy lamb. Other family members were in attendance.  Rini also ordered Smith not to discuss the allegations against her mother with the girl.

Here is more info on the dysfunctional marriage of Amanda and Jason, Like always its the kids who paid the big price. Starting to look like she did it out of spite. Because the judge took the kids away from her.

In mid-February, Jason F. Smith took the children from their home in Tualatin to live in Eugene. But on April 6, her mother came to the school with a court order and took the child to Clackamas County. An official at Meadowlark Elementary in Eugene wrote in a letter to the court that a Concord Elementary administrator told her that Stott-Smith was homeless and living with her parents. “Amanda also stated … that (her daughter’s) enrollment was to be kept confidential and her father was not to know where she was.”
In the latest filing, dated April 21, a Washington County Judge Kirsten E. Thompson awarded custody to Jason Smith, 33, in a sternly-worded order saying that Stott-Smith was not to visit the children without their father’s permission.
Court filings show that Stott-Smith and Smith married in April 2001 and separated in September 2008. Soon after, Smith entered an in-patient rehab program but the documents don’t say why. Stott-Smith and her children visited Smith on weekends.
According to court records, Jason Smith left a child in a vehicle in April 2001, just five days before his wedding to Amanda Stott-Smith in Hawaii. It’s unclear who the child was, because Eldon and his sister weren’t yet born. Smith pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $694 in fines, do community service and take a parenting class.
Smith also has run into other trouble with the law. In 1994, he was convicted of first- and second-degree theft from Eugene Coin and Jewelry. In 2000, he was convicted of first-degree drug possession. Last November, he was convicted of hit-and-run driving, and ordered to pay another man nearly $1,700 in restitution.

They said today that Jason ( Bio-daddy) had called the  Tualatin police about a phone call he had just recieved from Amanda that disturbed him in some way.  The same time he is talking to the police the kids were being  pushed off the bridge.  So she must have called him and said her goodbyes or what ever, then after she hung up a short time later the kids were in the Willamette River.

She got the kids every other weekend, starting at 7 p.m. on Fridays until 5 p.m. Sundays.  And its about a 2 hour drive from  Eugene, to Portland.  I havent seen anything about the other 4 hours or if she drove straight to Portland.

Sometime early Saturday, Jason Smith had called Tualatin police after having had a phone conversation with his estranged wife. He was concerned about the children and their mother based on that phone call, Tualatin Police Capt. Brad King said.King declined to say the time Jason Smith called Tualatin police, other than saying, “Everything was happening about the same time.”

“Jason has been with her around the clock. She’s doing awesome, and that’s probably what’s keeping him going, because he is absolutely crushed by the loss of his son,” said Jason Smith’s attorney, Laura Schantz, on Tuesday.

The Department of Human Services had received at least one report within the past year of suspected child abuse involving Amanda Jo Stott-Smith and her children.

Citing the ongoing criminal investigation and confidentiality issues, state child welfare officials would not discuss their past involvement with the family. But Human Services Director Bruce Goldberg has ordered an internal review of the agency’s contact with Stott-Smith to determine whether workers missed warning signs and where the department might need to improve.

“What I can tell you is we did not have an open case with the family prior to the incident itself,” Erinn Kelley-Siel, head of the state Children, Adults and Families Division, said Wednesday.

A memorial service is this coming Sunday afternoon in Eugene for Eldon .

“The service is at 2:30 p.m. at the Eugene Faith Center, 1410 W. 13th Ave., Eugene

Here is his Obit from the paper, kind of interesting they wouldn’t say the girls name but put it into the obit,  I like the way, they left out Amanda’s name though, I find it sad to list a parent in a obit who killed there kid.

    Eldon Smith
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Eugene Faith Center for Eldon Jay Rebhan Smith of Eugene, who died May 23 of drowning. He was 4.
Eldon was born Aug. 27, 2004, in Portland.

Survivors include his father, Jason Frederick Smith of Eugene; his sister, Trinity Christine Kimberly Smith of Eugene; four grandparents, Rick and Chris Duncan and Jay and Kim Smith, all of Eugene; and three great-grandparents, Penny Smith of Eugene and Hugh and Pat Carter of San Diego.

Here is some info about the funeral today.

Trinity Smith attended her brother’s service at the Eugene Faith Center, entering with one hand holding a white teddy bear and the other in her father’s grasp,

Jason Smith stepped behind the small wooden casket to thank people for gathering to remember his young son, the boy who loved puppies, Batman and the beach before his life ended in the Willamette River a little more than one week ago. “I can’t even begin to put into words how much I loved my son,” he added. “I’ll spend the rest of my life doing whatever I can to honor his life. There will never be a day that goes by that I won’t think of my son.”

The family invited reporters to attend the Sunday afternoon service with the request that no photos be taken and no family members be interviewed.
“It’s very good that we gather ourselves together to honor Eldon, acknowledge him and value his touch on our lives,” Officiating pastor Steve Overman told the roughly 200 people in attendance. “These are unfathomable and very, very difficult things, and it helps to walk together.”
The service ended with the opening of the boy’s casket. Jason Smith placed a stuffed animal wearing a Batman-like outfit at his son’s side, then kneeled and wept, caressing Eldon’s hair and face. A Christmas stocking lay on the boy’s chest, and a toy, still in its box, by his head.

Yesterday Oregon had its flags at 1/2 mast to honor Eldon.
Today a grand jury indited Amanda on 8 counts of murder.  ( the news site explains it. )  She will be back in court tomorrow to enter a plea.   They had 24 witnesses , including Jason , David Haag and Cheryl Robb. Amanda told the police that she committed the crime in an act of revenge against Jason.
Stott-Smith is accused of forcing her two young children off the Sellwood Bridge in the middle of the night during her weekend visitation with her son and daughter. She told authorities that she committed the crime in an act of revenge against her estranged husband, who obtained temporary custody of the children in April after a bitter dispute that had the children bouncing from three homes in three months.
David Haag and his companion Cheryl Robb, who both testified before the grand jury, went out in a boat and found the girl, her head and one leg out of the water, gasping for air, north of the bridge. Robb then noticed the boy, who turned out to have already died from drowning. Haag has said he’s convinced the 7-year-old was holding onto her brother, because they were so close together.
Among others who testified were the children’s father, Jason Smith, his daughter, the children’s’ maternal and paternal grandmothers, Haag and Robb, other witnesses who called 9-1-1, and the state medical examiner

I wonder if there going to mention the weapon and about that red hand mark Cheryl Robb saw on Eldons face when she pulled him out of the river????
The grand jury also indicted Stott-Smith for second-degree assault for using a dangerous weapon to injure her daughter. No details on the assault are included in the indictment.
Stott-Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Wednesday morning. Police and prosecutors plan to talk with reporters after that, during which more information will be released.

They kind of had a time line but still didn’t release much about the details.  They did say next week they were going to have a ceremony and give “Lifesaving Medals” to David Haag and Cheryl Robb.  Good for them if any one deserves it thoughs 2 do.  The only thing I found interesting was the capture of Amanda. When they found her she was dangling over the rail and actually jumped / fell but a Po Po grabbed her and saved her sorry ass. He is one of the people getting a Medal.  ( WTF!!) .  OK he did save a life, but still.  Medals should be for saving a life worth saving not one , thats going to rot in prison for many years to come.

After tracing Stott-Smith’s car, Portland officers found her on the ninth floor of a parking lot at Southwest Third Avenue and Yamhill Street in downtown Portland. Stott-Smith was dangling over the railing of the parking structure when Central Precinct Officer Wade Greaves arrived.
“She cleared the railing, and the officer grabbed her wrist as she began her descent,” Police Chief Rose Sizer said. Two other Central Precinct officers, Herbert Miller and Benjamin Cook, helped Greaves pull Stott-Smith back from the railing. Stott-Smith was arrested at 10:25 a.m., and her car was seized.

Call Made Before Kids Went Off Bridge

“Help me, help me,” Stott-Smith said, according to her husband. Smith told a detective his wife also made statements such as: “You’ve taken my joy away,” “Don’t have my kids anymore” and “Why have you done this to me?”
