May 4, 2009 by Jaded
San Bernardino, California–According to authorities, 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez was kidnapped after two gunmen broke into his family’s home SundaySunday reviews
afternoon. Briant is described as being Hispanic, 3-feet tall, and weighing 40 pounds, with brown eyes and long, curly brown hair. He was wearing a yellow shirt, blue-striped shorts and black sandals when he was taken.

Briant Rodriguez
The armed men entered the home through the front door at about 2:30 p.m., tied up Briant’s mother and his four siblings, and ransacked the home. After taking some cash and other property, one of the gunmen grabbed Briant and told the family, ‘Don’t call the police.’ An Amber Alert was issued about 9 hours later. Briant’s father was not home at the time, and his mother told authorities she didn’t know either of the gunmen.
The first suspect was described as approximately 18-years-old, thin and 5′ 10″. He was wearing a black ball cap, blue jeans and a green t-shirt. The second suspect was described as a skinny male, 24-years-old, also 5′ 10″. He was wearing all black, with the exception of a white bandana. Both were described as light-skinned. There is no vehicle description. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office at (866) 346-7632. This is eerily similar to the Cole Puffinburger case.

This is weird she has five children and they chose Briant, why him? BTW, he is cute as a button. Something doesn’t sound right with this story, why would you just chose one child and leave all the rest. Anyhow a child would be in the way. I don’t like the sound of this.
I do however hope he is found unharmed & safe really soon.

aw he is a sweetie. wtf is up with these (alleged) kid robberies? puffinburger, victoria stafford, this lil muppet… i dont think this is normal.

LIGHT SKINNED WHAT?
I hate “PC” news shows.
Ours in ATL does this crap and unless one of the officers, witnesses or field reporters actually get live on camera with a description including race, the Anchors will not mention it AT ALL.
God forbid we up the statistics or insinuate that more of one race is committing crimes than the other.

Probably because the older children can give better descriptions of them and the places that they took/take Briant!
God, watch over this little one, soften their hearts toward Briant and allow him to be returned safe and sound…. Please!!

This is weird….I hope the lil guy is alright…..

Touché! UNDOUBTABLY! I echo your concerns! Only politically correct descriptions should be used, not the all too familiar and hurtful colors of peoples skin, which have been linked to neo-Nazi groups! Whites will now be described as Vanilla Wafers, Hispanics as Cocoa Puffs, Blacks as Licoricians, Asians as Lip-Smacking Lemon Cookies, and American Indians as Red Hots! This delicious classification will surely make us all hungry and forget such silly matters.

WOW! I like it… That’d make me a “Red-Hot Vanilla Wafer.”

There is more to this story. It just does not add up. With 5 kids there, why would they choose the 3 year old? There has to be a reason behind this kidnapping.
I hope Little Brian comes home soon. He is so adorable…I hope he is unharmed.
11:57 am on May 4th, 2009
Briant is an adorable child. I’m thinking he might have been the youngest, easiest to take. I can only imagine how terrified he is right now.
I would not be surprised to read his father is involved somehow, drugs, owes the wrong people money? Something diff. not right, besides the fact they stole this little one. I hope he is returned and or found safe and sound.
11:59 am on May 4th, 2009
You’re probably right about there being more to the story…
I hope they chose him because he was the easiest to pick up and carry off and they were just using him to keep the folks from calling the cops. If so, maybe they’ll release him or someone will find him wandering a street somewhere. Poor little guy.
The other possibilities that are coming to mind are too disturbing.

this sounds like a susan smith story to me. i bet it is totally made up to cover up some bad shit the mom or somebody did. Just wait. I could be wrong but my “no fucking way meter” is rising.

The first thing that struck me about this story is what others have mentioned — this thing stinks to high heaven.
The second is this — how adorable is this little guy!? He looks like a miniature lead singer for a heavy metal band!
Please let him be found safe, there are so few happy endings to these stories.

How old were the other children? A three-year old would be ideal – not old enough to fight back effectively, but not so young that they risk easily killing the child.
It is a bizarre story, though. I look forward to updates.

The city is spelled wrong. It is said the way you have it spelled, but the correct spelling is San Bernardino. No biggie.

I found this somewhere else. Just throwing it out there. I don’t know how prominent gangs are there, but I tried to find one associated with a white bandana.
Homeland Security, created to keep the US safe from terrorist attacks, this month announced that they are engaged in raiding street gangs. The primary gang of interest is MS-13. This is an extremely brutal gang with ties to Central America with possible military training and rumored alliance with al-Qaida. “Operation Community Shield” netted 375 arrested gang members in 24 states. Crimes included rape, murder and drug trafficking. MS13 is the fastest growing gang and most brutal gangs that law enforcement officials can remember.
4:37 pm on May 4th, 2009
This gang terrorizes the Wilshire division of Los Angeles. It is one of the most dangerous gangs out there. It stems from El Salvador, and at first it was not intended to be a “gang” as we know it. It was created by two Salvadorians to protect themselves from the Mexicans back in the 70’s or 80’s because they were smaller in numbers than Mexicans. They were more interested in Ozzy Osbourne music and other rock bands. However, later generations made it what it is today.
This gang taxes all of the business owners in the Wilshire division. Years back, perhaps 2 years, a newborn was killed while in the arms of his mother, when a street vendor refused to pay his “tax” for his business. In broad daylight!!!
5:10 pm on May 4th, 2009
I wonder if the baby was caught in the crossfire, or if the gang member purposely chose to shoot the infant for maximum intimidation potential? Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter.
5:18 pm on May 4th, 2009
The street vendor sold fresh fruit and this lady stopped at his stand at the wrong time, because that is when the shots were fired, and poor newborn was fatally shot. This area I am speaking of, is the same area where the Homeless man was set on fire. I would NEVER venture into that area…no matter what. My husband works in this area and he would tell me scary stories. It’s enough to make anyone want to get the hell out of California!

Better or worse than East Palo Alto, ecvmanzo? I’ve never been to San Bernadino.
6:17 pm on May 4th, 2009
I think she was actually referring to the Wilshire area of Los Angeles….though from what I’ve heard East Palo Alto is horrendous. I haven’t heard of San Bernadino being a prime crime spot but I could be wrong…

I don’t know if this has been said… I just scanned the posts.
This sounds like a drug debt or money stolen from a dealer. They hire dumb young folks to do the dirty work for them and take the rap for cash & drugs in return. I don’t think this was random and I bet the parents KNEW who was behind this abduction.
If this is true the parents need to cooperate if they want their baby back instead of making the thugs think it’s their payment.

San Bernardino is really awful…down-right scary. I know from experience.
In 2008 it was ranked #36 in the City Crime Rankings – and I’ve heard that it’s anywhere from the 11th to 36th most dangerous city in the nation. On a scale of 1 to 100 in safety (100 being the safest), it’s ranked as a 4. The chances of you being a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 68.
One of it’s nicknames is San Burn-a-Negro.

San Bernardino is a tough town to live in.. from robbing the local Baskin Robbins to finding decapitated body in the park (several years back). Unluckily for me, I had to come back and its much more worse when I left 14 years ago.
Everywhere you turn, there is someone asking for change. Sad, but some of the kids start early on the “begging for change” at the stores… sad, sad.
Last year, I was a victim of a pickpocket.. stole my wallet… friends say I was lucky, as my son and I were unharmed. Maybe, this year, I will be lucky (knock on wood).
All the gang members that are here, are the Los Angeles throwbacks. Lot of homeless, jobless people on the streets now.

The ages of the other children weren’t reported….Briant is the baby of the family.
12:50 am on May 5th, 2009
The men ordered the family to lie on the floor and began searching the living room and the rest of the house, Vargas said.
“They didn’t find anything. There was nothing there,” Vargas said.
Using red tape, the men tied up Millana and her children, except for 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez.
“They told them he was taking the baby to Mexico and going to kill him,” Vargas said.
One of the children, an 8-year-old boy, escaped from the tape and ran toward the door to look for his brother, but his mother told him to stay down, Vargas said.
During the robbery, one of the men was talking to someone on a walkie talkie, Vargas said. Millana suspected there was a man outside, but she never saw a car, Vargas said.

I was watching this on the local news tonight, It doesn’t look like the family has any money , they have a total of 7 children. There is an adult child who doesn’t live there, I am wondering if he might be a gang member of some kind and this ties into him some how???
One of the children – an 8-year-old boy – wiggled free from his ties and freed the rest of the family, sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers said. Briant is the youngest sibling of Millan’s seven children. Her 16-year-old boy was not home and another adult child does not live at home.
The family lives in a modest, single-story home in a mainly lower-income slice of county territory abutting the city of San Bernardino

I don’t think anyone mentioned it yet, but on the TV news, they mentioned that the robbers commented on how cute the little girl was, meaning Briant. That it was a possible motive for taking him and thinking it was a little girl.
Another news site reported, when the 2 men first came in the house they said ”This a stick up”, Then they tied them up with Red Tape, except for Briant. After looking at the house and family photos, its clear this family had nothing to rob or steal. They are not that well off and hardly worth the time to rob and they had only been in the house for about 2 months.

I agree with Taz: The first thing I thought is, I wonder if they mistook him for a girl. His hair is long & in one of the pics he does look like a girl.
Poor sweet boy, I hope he’s found safe soon!
8:19 am on May 5th, 2009
Popeyeray, I’ll assume you’re being facetious.
This doesn’t really strike me as a random crime, so I don’t think the kid’s gender mattered much, I think he was simply the youngest. No one breaks in and robs a house full of poor people randomly. And for everyone who thinks this is somehow an invented story – this was a house with 6 people in it! Almost all of them children of varying ages. Yeah, all four would be able to stick to the correct details of a fabricated story while being questioned by police. That’s more farfetched than the idea that some latinos broke in and kidnapped their youngest.

Several people have mentioned drugs, but there is another possible motive. If the family is illegal, and from Central America, this could be a retaliation for not paying the human traffickers. This is a growing (but rarely reported) problem. The traffickers will bring people to the US illegally, on “commission”, since they are too poor to afford the trip. And then they exhort payment from the family forever. Kidnapping children is a favored method for the ones who wont/cant pay the exorbitant fees, because the babies can then be sold on the black market.
I am not making this up, I promise you – even if you have never heard of it. This is one of those “dirty little secrets” that our gossip-columnist media tend to not make a big deal of. The fact that the family seems to be “under the radar” (and hispanic) makes me wonder…
8:40 am on May 5th, 2009
Hmmm.. I did some quick research (too late to edit my post) and this trafficking scam is called the “coyote system”. I remember a case a while back about a newborn who was abducted under these exact circumstances. The families often will not go to the authorities because they are illegal and poor and terrified, so I think that this may be happening a lot more often than anyone is aware.
10:14 am on May 5th, 2009
Last night, a News Team interviewed the mom, and from what I saw and heard, it seems to be related either to drugs, or human smuggling. These people live in a very humble home, nothing that would imply that they had money. The mom stated that the men grabbed little Briant, and when she asked what their intentions were with the boy, she said that their response was “taking the boy to Mexico to kill him”.
This seems awfuly familiar to the Coyote System”, as Mazzi stated. These people do not play around, and will carry out their threats if necessary. They don’t see people as people, more like cattle!
I hope and pray this little precious boy is not hurt.
3:17 pm on May 5th, 2009
It been a bit since I read a story about that, but that make allot of sense, and is exactly how thoughs low life scum retaliate for non payment. Also its interesting the dad clamed up and didn’t say a word about anything , just held his head down the whole time like he was ashamed or something. It was only the mom who spoke out about it. I dont know how many of the kids are his either, maybe just the last 2 . Its hard to say how long they have been here in the states, all we know is they only lived in this house for 2 months.
3:33 pm on May 5th, 2009
A few years back, a 17 year old was being held captive by a gang of “coyotes”. The family had been receiving threatening calls stating that if they did not pay for bringing this boy over to the States, they would kill him. So they family, not knowing who else to turn to, contacted the police. The police told the family to set a meeting with the “coyotes” so that they could nab them. The “coyotes”, being that they are criminals and not brain surgeons, fell for the trap, met the family at a Burger King, and were caught immediately.
The Filipino Community is just as bad. They make them live with the coyotes, in exchange for paying their way. They work sometimes years, and never make enough to pay the coyotes. It’s a sad situation, but it’s real.

The case is difficult, authorities say, because random kidnappings are so rare.
“In my 20-year career, this is the first time I have experienced a home invasion robbery that has resulted in a kidnapping,” Hubbard said.
He said the suspects were clearly searching for something.
“They came to that house for a purpose and what that was we don’t know,” he said.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops said that so far no ransom or other money has been demanded in exchange for the boy. He also said the parents are not now suspects.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (May 6) – Authorities said Wednesday they were pursuing an unspecified lead in the abduction of a 3-year-old boy from his home but wouldn’t say whether any arrests were imminent three days after the boy’s mother reported that he was snatched by two armed men.
Sheriff’s investigators said they have received numerous tips since Maria Rosalina Millan called police on Sunday to say the men had burst into the family’s home, tied up Millan and five of her children and stole money and other property.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s investigators believe they have photographs of two men who kidnapped a 3-year-old San Bernardino boy on Sunday and the vehicle they were driving.
[...]
He said investigators found surveillance video from a liquor store near the boy’s home that showed a green Ford Bronco speeding away from the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon.
[...]
They then visited stores in the vicinity that sell the type of material used to tie up Briant Rodriguez’s family and found video of two men buying the items. Hoops would not say what store sold the items.
That same store also had video of a vehicle that appeared to be the same Ford Bronco leaving the parking lot on Friday, he said.
The vehicle is a late 1980s or early 1990s green Bronco that may have oxidized paint on its roof.
While investigators believe they have images of the men and the vehicle, they still don’t know the mens’ identities.

SAN BERNARDINO – Investigators said Tuesday they have made headway in the case of the 3-year-old San Bernardino boy abducted more than a week ago and that they believe Briant Rodriguez is still alive.
“We are conducting this investigation on the assumption he’s still alive. We have no indication otherwise,” said San Bernardino County sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Hubbard, who is overseeing the search for Briant. ..
“We’re not going anywhere,” Hubbard vowed. “We’re going to carry on until we’ve exhausted every possible lead and tip.”
