Ada, Oklahoma–Daniel Whelchel’s grandma has been taking care of him for 18 long years. Mona Whelchel told authorities that she had a strange feeling that, at some point, her grandson was going to try and kill her. Talk about a woman’s intuition–Daniel did just that. He tried to put his grandma out to pasture. The feisty little lady wasn’t quite ready to go, though.

evening, Daniel asked his grandma for a ride to the store. He insisted on making a side trip to a piece of property the family had recently sold. When the pair arrived on the property, Daniel made his intentions known. ‘Grandma, I have been waiting on you to die naturally, but that has not happened, so I am going to kill you. How do you want it? I can break your neck or I can beat your head,’ Daniel said. ‘Neither,’ she answered. He attacked her. Grabbing her by the throat, he tried to snap her neck, but she got away. He gave chase. When Daniel caught up to his grandma, he started beating and kicking her in the head. Thinking he had done away with her, he left her there, alone, to die. He got into her car and high-tailed it back to her house. The 60-year-old woman hauled herself up and began to crawl…it took her 6 hours to crawl 150-yards to a relative’s home. Her sister took her to the hospital where she is being treated for head injuries–luckily, none of the injuries are life threatening.
When police caught up with Daniel, they showed him a picture of his grandma, her eyes swollen shut and her face covered in bruises. They asked him if he had ever thought about going back to help his grandma. He told them he ‘had thought about it, but that he also thought she would call the cops.’ Oh you little asshole. Daniel Whelchel, 20, will be charged with attempted murder. His bond was set at $250,000. This isn’t his first brush with the law…in 2008, he was arrested on drug and domestic abuse complaints. Asshole.

I’m so glad the grandmother had the fortitude and determination to keep on fighting for her life. She reminds me of my grandmother in that regard–fiesty, determined and resilient. The main difference is that my grandmother doesn’t have ungrateful little bastards for grandchildren. In fact, my brother and I are both very protective over our grandmothers. That’s the way it should be!
I hope this dear lady heals quickly. Although I’m sure the pain in her heart will not heal. I can’t imagine how hurt she must be that her grandson did this to her. It’s a betrayal of the worst kind.

Oh, man. Mike and I saw a kid who looked just like this in the grocery store parking lot yesterday. He had put groceries in his trunk and was going to push the cart back to the little cart depository thingy when he slowly looked up at us. Mike turned to me and, in a quiet but high-pitched tone, said, “Scary…..”
It was hilarious. I wonder if that kid is going to kill a grandma. Probably.

I can imagine how that poor grandma feels…she gave up 18 years of her life to raise him when she could have been getting on with her own life and what thanks does she get? Attacked by some selfish little asshole ingrate whose only concern was when grandma would die so he could get his hands on what she had worked for.
