Lena Anderson Didn’t Care

Las Vegas, NevadaPatrick Atkins, 15, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at age 4. By the time he was diagnosed, he had already suffered permanent kidney damage; he was placed on multiple meds and required a catheter. His mother was informed that if PatrickPatrick reviewsPatrick reviews didn’t get a new kidney and/or didn’t continue with his medical treatment, he would die of kidney failure. His mother, Lena Anderson, ‘hoping the disease would just go away on it’s own,’ stopped taking her son to the doctor when he was 12-years-old. Now he’s dead.

Back in 2006, Lena made a ‘conscious decision’ to stop treating her son for his condition. Because Patrick didn’t like taking his medicine, she didn’t make him. Instead of changing out his catheter, he did it, hastily, according to Lena. It’s not like the neglect went unnoticed–on five occasions over 10 years, CPS was called over concerns about Patrick’s welfare–three of those referrals were in the first 20 months of Patrick’s life. Each time, the case was closed within days. On two separate occasions, doctors noticed the absence of Patrick’s catheter but failed to report it to authorities. Hmmm…does anyone else smell failure?

In February, Lena took Patrick into the ER. For weeks, he had been vomiting and fatigued. He was having difficulty breathing and had a nosebleed that just wouldn’t quit. When questioned, Lena told doctors that Patrick didn’t have any history of chronic kidney disease. On a hunch, a doctor ran tests for it anyway. Too late. Patrick died soon after. Lena Anderson, 40, was arrested last week and charged with child abuse, neglect, and murder. After her arrest, Lena told officers that she made her decision because ’she was tired of fighting her son.’ Callous bitch…

this whole thing makes me sad.  And the mom makes me sad… I think it’s because she looks so…. normal-mom-like.

Was she a single mother?  I wonder why other family members did not get involved…

    major :(

    RIP Patrick

I believe the kid’s father had also called CPS to report his concerns…so I’m assuming they are separated or divorced.

Well, I guess she won’t have to fight him anymore.

The look on her face in her mugshot is so fucking irritating,  I almost slapped the shit out of my laptop screen.

I thought the same thing while reading the story. The entire mess reeks with failure and she’s nothing but a cold-hearted bitch. Sad.

I thought the same thing.  She looks so put out and angry that she’s even there.

I don’t understand how anyone could do this to another human being, let alone their own son.  I hope she rots.

This kid didn’t have a chance, it seems that no one really took interest in his well being.  It makes me sad, he could of lead a somewhat normal life, but no this stupid ass bitch was too busy to be bothered!

Wouldn’t St. Jude’s have taken him, even at the age he was, but most definitely back when he was first diagnosed?  Or is that only cancer?  Some children’s hospital, somewhere, probably could have treated him for free.

In fact, his kidney damage was probably due to his “mother” waiting too long to take him to the doctor for the initial diagnosis when he was 4.  Imagine how much better his quality of life would have been….but that would have taken some time-consuming phone calls on his mother’s part, and she couldn’t be bothered, so it’s death at 14 for you, kid!

Poor little dude.  I hope this stupid fucking bitch rots in jail along with those  animals who watched their kid wither away from lymphoma.

I hope you rot in hell Lena Anderson. You are a disgrace to all mothers, you worthless bitch. You had a son that needed medical assistance, he needed care, he needed love, and you took all of that away you careless, heartless TWAT.

Selfishness on this scale is heartbreaking and her pouting mugshot makes me want to break her fucking jaw.  She should have given up her rights to him and allowed someone who would have actually cared about his well being to adopt him.  I hope someone shanks this cunt in prison very quickly.

Totally not defending the so-called mother, but the kid was fifteen and didn’t say anything to anyone? My son is two and he helps me do his breathing treatments and lets me know if he needs suction (he has a trach). Kidney disease is no joke, and requires a lot of doctor visits and invasive treatments. It always astounds me that everyone can drop the ball on a child like this.

I can understand the tiredness and the frustrations of thinking your child will never be ‘normal’ or completelyhealthy, I do, I understand, but there are some great options for stressed parents of a sick child, especially in this case. Lena Anderson; Did you ever inquire to the Kidney foundation for help? Or Government assistance with his daily caregiving? When you knew you could no longer take care of him and were tired of ‘fighting’ with him, did you consider that he was probably just as tired of you and your attitude towards his illness? Compassion and kindness, a mothers love, goes a long way in facilitating a strong will to live, it appears you gave him none!
Fly to Jesus, Patrick! Total restoration now!

This wasn’t a case of a mother intentionally abusing the boy as much as it was a scenario of a mother letting a 15-year-old manage his own health. It’s idiotic and wrong, but I don’t think this was a situation that was controlled by the mom. It was a situation that should have been controlled by the mom. I think she is telling the truth when she says she basically “gave up” .

I have good friends who have a boy around the same age as this kid suffering from Chron’s Disease. I say “suffering” but he isn’t as his parents are helping him make sure the disease doesn’t kill him. At times, they have to FIGHT him to take his medication on time over playing video games, and he bitches about the doctor visits that interfere with his socializing. It’s the mentality of an immortal teenager and just what parents of kids with treatable afflictions have to deal with.

My friends, like the majority of parents in that situation, stick it through and ensure that their kid does what he needs to do to prolong a healthy life even if it means at times they have to constantly fight him about it. This lazy, sack of fail did not. For that, I think she has been arrested and charged accordingly.

Indeed. There was a case not too long ago about a 12 or 13 year old girl suffering from some chronic or terminal illness that had chosen to die, and her parents were standing behind her decision. I supported their right to do that, because research had been done, the atmosphere was controlled in that she was being seen regularly, and she ultimately understood the consequences of her failure to accept further treatment.

This is nothing like that. The mother wasn’t supporting the informed, conscious decisions of her child… she was pretending he wasn’t sick.

She had a court hearing and bit of the defense seems to have been revealed:
    ——————————————
But during a brief court appearance this morning in Las Vegas Justice Court, her attorney said Anderson was a loving, caring mother who did everything she could to help her chronically ill son.
    [...]
Silverstein said the medications made Patrick ill and he stopped taking them despite his mother’s attempts to keep him on the regimen. Rather than live as a sickly child, Patrick likely knew he would die and wanted to live out the last few years of his life as a normal kid.

“Maybe Patrick Atkins decided that the quality of life was better than the quantity of life,” Silverstein said. “Maybe he decided he would rather live our the few years that he had left as a normal child rather than live longer as a sickly, weak child.”
    [...]
Silverstein told the court that Anderson, a cashier at Red Rock casino, tried multiple times to get Patrick to comply with his medical care. But he was a rebellious teen who wanted to take control of his life – and death.

“What do you do as a mother when you tell your child, you nag your child repeatedly, ‘You have to take these pills.” And your child says, ‘I did.’ And he lies to you,” Silverstein said.

I don’t care what the kid’s wishes were, there is no excuse for him dying  in this way.  She just chose to ignore it.  Lazy and selfish.

Nor does her new story about how it was all her son’s doing jibe with her failure to bring her son in for timely care when he was clearly deteriorating, and failing to notify those health professionals that he had chronic kidney disease.  In light of that, how does she think anyone is going to believe the ‘he just wouldn’t take his pills’ notion?  And you know what?  I wouldn’t want an angry, fed up mother who has checked out on the situation changing my catheter either.   Dayum.

Anderson  is asking to have the murder charge against her dismissed because Nevada law gives her the right to make that decision, her attorney contends.
    [...]
The law Silverstein cites is known as the Uniform Act on Rights of the Terminally Ill, or the “living will” law. It allows adults suffering from fatal illnesses to declare before they die that they don’t want steps taken to keep them alive.

The law applies only to people age 18 and older and asks them to sign, in advance, a declaration declining medical treatment to prolong their lives.

This is slightly different from Anderson’s case. She is charged with one count of murder by child abuse, based on allegations that she withheld medical care from her son, a minor.

In addition, Patrick never signed a statement saying he wanted to die.
    [...]
“In this case, his wishes can be inferred by his inactions,” Silverstein said. “He did not take that medicine. He did not use the catheters.”

Silverstein said Anderson was capable of choosing whether to continue Patrick’s treatment even if he wasn’t.

Derek Humphry, president of the Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization, a pro-euthanasia group based in Oregon, said Patrick’s death sounded more like a case of death by neglect than euthanasia.

“Euthanasia means help with a good death,” said Humphry, who had no direct knowledge of the case. “Neglect is not help.”

I don’t think her argument is going to fly.  Just like her son, she wants to avoid “taking her medicine”.
