Brandon Tedder, Brandon Mintz, and Daniel Sykes

Columbus County, North CarolinaAngela Bonahm was at the church, waiting for her husband-to-be, Brandon Tedder; the two were to be married in less than an hour. Bonham began to worry as the hour passed and the groom was nowhere to be found. A friend finally delivered the news–there would be no wedding that day–Brandon Tedder was killed by a drunk driver on the way to the church.

Brandon Tedder had two members of the wedding party with him when John Daniel Kelley veered into the wrong lane on Highway 214 and hit Tedder’s car, head on. Tedder’s best man, Brandon Mintz, and groomsman, Daniel Sykes, were also killed in the accident. All three died instantly, at the scene.

Kelley and his passenger, his 17-year-old son, were injured in the accident, but are expected to fully recover. Troopers said they found several empty beer bottles in Kelley’s car and have charged him with DWI. Other charges are pending.

    thats so sad...
  • HotReadingMama: Yeah….I came back to look again. As much as I empathize with so many on here….they slide off my back. This one didn’t. Can’t put my finger on why exactly…we have seen countless innocents hurt. This one just touched me.

Me too. This one has been on my mind all day long. I just can imagine what the families are going through right now....

Morbid: I keep thinking about the parents of the 13-year-old. Same age as my kid.

Jees he created a mess.  How could anyone live with themselves after something like that?
  • Sir Geoff
My Gawd, this sounds like one of those urband legend stories, but for it to be true!  I can't imagine the bride and grooms families pain. I think life in prison is not too extreme for someone who kills driving drunk.
  • Special2bme
Just Fuck drunk drivers and him! Bless her!
  • Concerned Citizen
Fuck that drunk driver and his son, too!! They should both be charged, as far as I'm concerned. He shouldn't have let his father get behind the wheel...or at least reported him. He's old enough to know better.
As the daughter of an alcoholic myself, I feel no pity for drunks.
    This was a senseless murder.
My thoughts are with the victims and their families.

    Heartwrenching!!
Instant Wings!! Rest Peacefully Brandon Tedder, Your bride to be is a very Strong young lady!
Go with God, Brandon Mintz and Daniel Sykes!!

OMG...I don't even know what to say to something like this. God rest their souls, and help the surviving families heal from such a horrible, and senseless crime.

This is one awful story. It made me feel a little sick to my stomach.
  • Why is it in alcohol related fatalities, that the drunk always survives? I guess there is something about being drunk and stupid that makes you invincible…like a fucking cockroach.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, statistically-speaking, the drunk driver dies most often, but we never really hear about those because they're not particularly heart-wrenching.

Harley_Tech: That woman has much more compassion than I could ever muster.  Again, someone tell me exactly what would be wrong with shoving a .45 in this guys mouth and scattering his gray matter all over the back set of his car then leaving his rotting corps for the scavengers to eat.R

My initial reaction, too. But I would really prefer he suffer a slow, painful death.

The young bride is a far better person than I.

Really sad!  What a spectacular young woman!  Wishing her the best...

Ok it didn't post what I said, but what I said was.....I agree, it should be the other way around.  I feel for the family, losing three on on day is bad, but worse I think  on a special occasion.

  • Parts of NC are still rural- in the Appalachian Mountains...This kid was probably stoked that his old man took him out drinking with him.
The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree.
That, or over-bearing, drunkass dad wouldn't be one to mess with when he is drunk without commencing an ass-whoopin on the side of the road.

Sooo sad this story.  There is a video at this link, you can see the two cars.  The bride to be speaks about the accident.  Made me cry.

    Damn, just - damn.

Not feeling as sorry for the 17 yr. old passenger as most, though.  Old enough to recognize that dear 'old dad has been drinking and is inebriated.  Old enough to take the damn keys or not get in the car and call LE himself.  Especially if it turns out this isn't dad's first offense.  Sure, Jr.'s gonna feel bad, and likely, so is dad - but not NEAR as bad as those people at that wedding who lost THREE members of their family on what should have been an extremely HAPPY occasion - especially the bride-to-be.  Tragic.

Responsible drinkers I can tolerate - Stupid ass drunks I fucking HATE!

Quote from the article by the bride to be  :   “Yes, I am devastated; yes, I am grieving; yes, I am hurt, but I know they are in heaven looking down on us, waiting for the day we walk through those pearly gates,” Bonham wrote. “Having God in my heart, I cannot hate the driver of the other vehicle, he is going to pay for this by living with it for the rest of his life.”

    WOW.
  • tutkill
Just waiting for Kelley to say he can't remember the accident. You know its coming.
  • seductress
unbelievable.......... The actions of others always seem to be so tragic. I feel for the victims families and for the son of the stupid ass drunk driver. The son will probably have flashbacks of this forever, but hopefully will never drink and drive.
  • Stories like this always leave me dumbfounded. It's seems like the drunk drivers always survive instead of the victims. This is just tragic.

  • Anyone have any information on Kelley? Curious as to if he has ever been charged with anything similar.
  • That is some tragic shit right there. I cannot possibly imagine the extreme emotions those people are going through.
  • So sad. What was supposed to be one of the happiest day of their lives was ruined by one man's selfishness and ignorance. Brides are supposed to cry tears of joy at their wedding, not cry because their groom has been killed by a drunk driver. Poor poor woman.
  • Hippiepoet
Just wow. What a fucked up day for those folks.
  • Redshoes
such a depressing story.  Could you imagine being at that wedding?  Being the bride, the family members?  My god.

    Fuck that drunk driver.

I can't believe the groom, best man, and ring barer died.  how sad.
