when she received a call from her boyfriend, Jason Lopez. Jason told her he might have burned her child, 1-year-old Fabian Hackett, while giving him a bath. ‘He said he gave my son a bath and thought it was a little hot, but that he was OK,’ Shelly said. ‘He said he put cold water on it and thought he was burned because he was red.’ Shelly told Jason to take the child to the hospital, but Jason refused, insisting the baby was fine.
Fabian wasn’t ‘fine.’ He was suffering third-degree burns to more than 70% of his little body. He was immediately flown from St. Francis Health Center to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where doctors informed Shelly there was nothing they could do for her child. Fabian was then flown to a burn center at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Ohio. Shelly was told that Fabian has a 30% chance of survival.
Fabian underwent his first surgery on Tuesday. DoctorsDoctors reviews removed dead skin from the back of his legs…they will attempt the same procedure on his right arm. ‘They don’t want to do the grafts yet because he’s not strong enough,’ Shelly said. ‘The only place they can graft from is his tummy.’ Doctors might be able to use living tissue from Fabian’s head, but a skull fracture he received on Saturday could complicate the procedure. Fabian is currently under sedation and is being monitored for brain swelling. A skull fracture and third-degree burns…can’t wait to hear the bullshit story behind that.
Shelly has known Jason for about 6 months. The two previously lived together, but their co-habitation ended after about 2 weeks. They weren’t living together when Fabian was injured. Jason Scott Lopez, 24, is being charged with attempted murder and abuse of a child under the age of 18. Asshole….

Okay if you go on the journal and look at the pictures — I am guessing all those pictures had to be taken BEFORE this happened since as of a couple of days ago they said he was still all swollen and in very bad shape. There is a picture on there of him and his mommy and his arm is in a cast….so was there previous abuse. I mean I know there are other reasons a little kid can be in a cast (an accident?), but just thought it odd.
He really is a beautiful boy — I hope he heals quickly and as completely as he can.

All, I know how it is spelled. I spelled it that way for a reason. But after watching how all the english teachers come out, was not the point. I was using the word as a slang word. I have learned on this site that people are more concerned about spelling, than the real issues. Just view the posts, it says it all.

Today brings good news and heart-wrenching news to report.
The good news is that today Fabian will be discharged from the hospital! This strong willed little fighter has overcome all odds against him to heal from the horrific wounds inflicted upon him. A couple of months ago Fabian was given a 30% chance of living, and today he is leaving the hospital smiling, crawling, and standing! He also has maintained the spunk and vigor that he had before this crime was committed against him. AND….he gets to wear a cool burn suit with an Elmo on the front!
The photo attached is one Shelly sent this morning of Fabian during his discharge party at the Shriners Hospital….Go Fabian, you look marvelous!
The sad news is that Fabian won’t be leaving the hospital in the arms of his mommy. Due to her “instability in the past” and the fact that Shelly has nothing to call home at this point, since she left Topeka to be by Fabians side, the state is placing Fabian in temporary foster care upon his discharge. Needless to say, this is terribly painful for Shelly and her family. Her sis tried to hurry up and get “approved” to be a foster family, but the process takes too long. Talk about being kicked when you are down. I may not know the whole story, nor in my mind does it matter to me….I have seen Fabian and Shelly together interacting, and there is nothing in this world she wouldn’t do for her son. Obviously Shelly is really struggling through this time and needs your prayers. There is a hearing on Wednesday where hopefully she will learn more about next steps to getting him home with her.
Please remember that there is the fundraiser in Manhattan on the 18th at Auntie Mays (see previous post for details). “For Fabian” t-shirts will be sold there and all proceeds from the door will be donated to Fabians fund. You can also order the t-shirts from Sara (also on previous post). I am hoping that the money raised will be able to be used to help Shelly out towards whatever it takes to get Fabian back home.
Thinking of you today Shelly….keep your head up! Unfortunately, the past rears it’s ugly head from time to time, and the best way to overcome it is to continue fighting, work towards your goals, and know that your friends and family are there to support you when times get tough! You are a good mom who has had some rough draws in life….overcome them- you can do it!
