Melissa Huckaby Arrested For Killing Sandra Cantu

Prosecutors say they’re considering rape and molestation allegations against Melissa Huckaby. San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Robert Himmelblau said Monday that a homicide charge against Huckaby could include the special circumstances of rape with a foreign object, lewd and lacivious conduct with a child and murder in the course of a kidnapping.

Tracy, CA–We have been following the story on the disappearance of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, in the forums for weeks. For those of you unfamiliar with the case, here’s a bit of background. On March 27, Sandra went to a friend’s home to play…she never returned. Sandra’s body was found last Sunday, stuffed into a suitcase and thrown into an irrigation pond. Today, an arrest was made. Melissa Huckaby, 28, is being charged with the kidnapping and murder of Sandra Cantu.

Huckaby is the granddaughter of Lane Lawless, a pastor from a nearby church. She also serves the church as a Sunday school teacher. Lawless had been questioned by police and the church was searched extensively on Friday. In a phone interview with CBS Station KPIX on Friday, Huckaby stated that Sandra visited her home the day she disappeared. She also said she had left a suitcase in the driveway that day, and that it was missing.

Shortly after her telephone interview with the reporter, Huckaby drove to the police station where she was questioned until early this morning. At 2:25 this morning, Huckaby was loaded into a police cruiser and transported to San Joaquin Jail, where she was booked on charges of kidnapping and murder. ‘We have information that by the time (Sandra Cantu) was reported missing to us, she had already been murdered,’ Police Chief Janet Thiessen said. She would not release any other details or possible motive.

Though police have had prior contact with Huckaby, she does not have a record of violence. Huckaby was convicted for petty theft in 2006 in Los Angeles County and again recently in San Joaquin County. According to court records, the judge ordered her to be examined by physicians after Huckaby claimed she was not mentally competent to stand trial. It was determined that she was competent and she pleaded guilty.

An autopsy was conducted on Sandra’s body on Tuesday. Autopsy results are not expected for four to six weeks. As always, we will keep you updated as the case progresses.

I have an 8-year old daughter. I often argue with my ex about whether she’s old enough to cross the street and play with the neighbors’ kids in Long Island. Then, stories like this come out. Utter horror. The poor little child was murdered in her own trailer park. My only hope is that she did not suffer, and that the perp is appropriately punished.

I have an 8 year old son, and watching that little girl walking around the neighborhood on her own made me sick to my stomach. I dont care what any of you say, there is no way in hell I would let my son “run the streets” at 8 freaking years old. And this is that I live in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Miami, if I lived in a freaking trailer park, are you kidding me?

It’s sad how a child’s financial situation seems to put them in harm’s way more often. It seems that so many of these stories happen to children living in apartments or trailer parks. Is it not a fact that trailer parks have a higher population of sexual predators? Maybe it’s not, someone correct me if I’m wrong, but it sure seems that way. I understand the mom cant help her financial situation, but why would you let your child roam around unsupervised like that?

I was hoping and praying when this beautiful little girl was reported missing, that they would find her alive. . . . though these cases usually end so tragically, as this one did. Like most of you I am in shock that not only was it a woman, but that it was the mother of one of her little friends!! WTF – How Can This Be??!! Her family, already reeling from losing her, probably fully expecting the monster to be a male pedo. . . . . . and the monster turns out to be a friends mother! Someone they trusted! I know that no motive, no explanation can begin to explain why anyone would kill an innocent child – but what in the world could this woman be thinking, when this little girl, her own daughter’s playmate, came to her door? In the phone interview, she seems 100% sure that it is her suitcase…. that is… until she realizes that no description or photo had been released yet. She tried to play it off as “Oh, well, just from what I could see on the T.V.” —- uh huh… try again? Try as I might – I could NOT make out one thing about that suitcase – not ONE. She tripped herself up. She also hesitated in the beginning when saying “My grandfather was not ..(pause) – that he was not at all somebody that would… do anything.” Kinda like she wanted to say he was not involved – but, again, that would give HER away… which she kinda already did.

I am still a bit shocked that it was a woman – and not just any woman… Sandra’s best friends’ mother. Didn’t she say she turned Sandra away that day? Didn’t she also state that she was at the church – and came home to find her suitcase missing? Where was HER daughter while Sandra was being murdered then dumped? Did her daughter witness ANY of this? If so, I hope they can add another charge onto this cow for subjecting her child to that. Hell, do it anyway. Her daughter now has to live with the fact that her own mother killed her best friend.
Too bad she didn’t die in the hospital ICU. Painfully and slowly. I really, really hope that whatever WAS wrong was something that Sandra did in defense of her life.

I wait anxiously for the autopsy results and more info from the police.

Other than the killer being a woman, not shocked at all. As great as the media plays up the stranger danger, most children and adults are killed by someone they know. I imagine rage played a motive in this killing. Whatever the reason, I hope she pays the price!

I’ve been following this case since the beginning, and I was rather surprised to find that a woman was responsible for the crime. The fact that they are confident that they have their person and that there will be no further arrests is equally surprising to me. I would have guessed that she was in league with another person or persons, almost certainly male, probably with rape or molestation as a primary motive. However, police have said that is not the case. I then assumed that perhaps it was an accident that she was trying to cover up–maybe she struck Sandra with her car while backing out of the driveway, panicked, and tried to cover it up. But that theory doesn’t really stand up in light of the charges against her. Police are charging her with kidnapping and murder. One would think if it was an accident that she was covering up, the charges would be more like manslaughter and tampering with evidence/a corpse (depending on the circumstances, obviously). The kidnapping charge is the big one, in my opinion. That seems to imply that she intentionally took Sandra and then intentionally killed her.

One can only wonder what her motive possibly could have been. I have a feeling there is much more to this story than what is being released to the media.

Either way, what a horrible ending to this tale of a missing girl. RIP, Sandra. I’m just glad that the police have found the person responsible, and I hope she gets exactly what she deserves. I can’t imagine the pain that Sandra’s family is feeling, nor what it would be like to be in the position of the other parents in the community while the killer was still at large. How terrifying and awful for everyone.

I have only two plausible theories. I discount the seeing something illegal(disregarding molestation) because generally that would not be a motive for murder.

1) Molestation. There could have been some serious shame with what she had been doing to Sandra and decided that the best way to get rid of the possibility of exposure was to pack the kid up and dispose.

2) Abuse gone too far. Generally I think physical abuse is progressive and there would have been signs before hand, but sometime people snap. So she disposed of the body in the suitcase.
Look at her eyes. They are worn from guilt and fear of getting caught.

What sucks about this site is that we only get to read about dead kids after the fact. I am a father of two, and discovered the site when poor Rowan Ford was murdered, and her dead, mutilated body was tossed like meat into a cave.

We, as parents, must, it seems, be proactive in suspecting teachers, counselors, clergy, family and neighbors as potential perps. We’re always behind the 8-ball. Always the last to know. It sucks.

I don’t think Huckaby was a real Sunday School teacher. I read on one site, that she was just a Sunday School helper, and that there had been no real services in that church for a few years.

The “church” that Gramps ran nearby is the one defunct (altho’ there apparently was services there Easter) . . . there’s another church affiliated with the Lawless (her maiden name) Family in Bellflower CA, where her Dad and Uncle are listed as part of the “Worship Team.” (???) THIS church is where Huckaby was listed as a Sunday School “helper” – she’s been living with Grams and Gramps for over a year and this other church is like a 3-4 hour drive away, so it’s not likely that Huckaby attended OR was a “helper” there lately.

Zibarro it hurts to even try to understand these monsters. This has shattered my heart to pieces. I prayed for this child’s safe return. To see her mother on TV crying and pleading for her child, would just make you want to curl up and cry along with her.

I hope that this case will help with so many others that go unsolved.

Being a man its interesting to see the peoples reactions to this on the news websites. I have followed along as they looked at over 60 male Pedo’s and even the kissing dude. People are totaly shocked about finding out, it is was a woman who did it and someone who lived close and had a personal relationship with Sandra. People are also waiting for the man / accomplace to be arrested . Who knows maybe there is one, or maybe there isnt. Taz, I am guilty of that myself. I was waiting for the scary looking male to be featured on the news as the “stranger abductor”. But boy was I shocked to learn it was a female, and how close she was to little Sandra Cantu.

Why do we continue to see males portrayed as the “strangers”, or the “bad guys”? it’s clear that either one can offend and commit such heinous crimes.

But it’s so true that I would feel weirded out if a man approached my kids, and not so much if a female approached them. Trust me that today, it changed everything for me.

As a mother, everyday is a learning experience. I am a suspicious person by nature, and sometimes it takes a few minutes of meeting someone for me to know that I should keep my kids away from them, male or female.

This shit just keeps getting stranger. While I do not feel like looking up facts and figs, I do know from reading true crime stories since I was 8 that this is a rather strange set of circumstances.

Most women who murder do so to a significant other, or their OWN child. Rarely does one kidnap, unless they have some strange fantasy about raising a child they could not conceive. There is also the whole “helping the perv they consider their boyfriend” scenario (which usually involves molestation in some form) as we see on the frontpage all too much.

But a woman acting alone? Kidnapping a child to commit a sexual based murder? Thats something I rarely, if ever, recall hearing about.

It seems she has always been in a position where there have been children in her care. I would be very surprised if she hasn’t molested other children in addition to Sandra. She may have started doing this to other children at a young age like when she was “playing mother hen” to her younger relatives. It just seems convenient that she was also a nanny and a Sunday school teacher. I just keep reading in all these articles how she “loved” children…… Yeah, in a sick demented way obviously! This story also has me wondering if there is a chain of abuse, possibly done to her as a child by a family member or members of her relatives church.

There’s been an interesting development in the case of Sandra Cantu’s kidnapping and murder in Tracy, CA.
Sandra’s accused killer Melissa Huckaby has been tied to a January report of a 7-year-old girl being taken to a park for 4 hours and returned to her family high on muscle relaxers.
From the Tracy Press:

The incident was reported on January 17 by a family in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park…
The January report alleges that someone took a 45-pound blue-eyed dark-haired girl to a park. The woman and the child were gone for four hours, from about 1:30 to after 5 p.m., according to the police log. The woman who took the girl drove a purple Kia Sportage, according to the report.
Police towed a purple Kia Sportage registered to Huckaby the day after farmworkers found Sandra’s body inside a suitcase dumped in a dairy lagoon.
The police log also noted an officer said the girl might be with a mobile home park resident’s “granddaughter.” Huckaby until her arrest lived with her grandparents, Clifford Lane and Connie Lawless.
When the woman — apparently Huckaby — returned the girl, the family took her to the hospital. A doctor found benzodiazepines — a muscle relaxant — in the girl’s bloodstream, the police log noted.

Melissa Huckaby is due back in court on April 24th where she will enter a plea – one of not guilty, I’m sure.

You have no idea. Not covered by the media is that Melissa was allegedly raped by a police officer when she was about 18 years old. This case was dropped as police tend to protect their own. After that time, she suffered from mental issues to some degree though I still find it hard to believe it was a pre-meditated murder. My guess is that it was some terrible accident and then she freaked. I don't know if we'll ever know for sure. To be sure, there is much more to this than the public will ever know.

Brea, CA Police Dept. I'm not sure if it made it to the District Attorney. Internal investigation by the department led to conclusion that insufficient evidence existed to suggest it was a rape. The family decided not to pursue the matter because she was pretty traumatized.
