Phoenixville, PA–On March 17, Ian Kohn called 911 and requested an ambulance; his son, 23-month-old Joseph Clayton Kohn, was unresponsive. Medics arrived at the home at approximately 3:55 p.m. Little Joseph was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m. On March 18, an autopsy was performed. The coroner determined that Joseph died as a result of drug intoxication…the little guy had a significant amount of methadone in his system. Hmmmm…I wonder how that got there?
The forensic pathologist noted that he found high amounts of methadone in the child’s urine and in his blood. With that information, authorities were able to serve a search warrant on Kohn’s home. InsideInside reviews
the room Kohn shared with his toddler, they found methadone bottles, suspected heroin wrappers, cooking spoons, medical syringes, a glass smoking pipe, Clonazepam, Fluoxetine, Cephalexin, Levaquin, Loestrin and several unknown pills. Damn…dude is a regular pharmacy! Kohn was then placed under arrest for a probation violation.
The next day, the interviews began. How did Joseph end up with enough methadone in his system to kill him? Kohn had no clue how the methadone got there, he knows better than to give a child methadone. ‘I know how powerful this stuff is. When I first started taking methadone, one tablet would mess me up. Like a kid, I don’t think he would survive off one. I don’t think it’s possible off of half of one. I don’t think he’d live. I wouldn’t give a kid methadone.’ He must not have sounded very convincing…the cops weren’t buying it.
Further questioning revealed Kohn’s deadly secret. Yes, he gave the child methadone. He had been giving the child the drug for three consecutive days leading up to his death. Kohn explained to the detective how he wrapped the methadone in a dollar bill and crushed it with a lighter. Afterwards, he mixed the pills in with whatever liquid he was putting into the child’s bottle. The last dose was given to his son at approximately 11:00 p.m. on MarchMarch reviews
16. It took him nearly 16 hours to place the call to 911. Un-fucking-believable.
Kohn was interviewed again on March 27. This time, Kohn reported that he had given Joseph two methadone pills a day, crushed up in his Gatorade, for the five days prior to his death. On the very last day of Joseph’s short life, Kohn had upped the dosage to four methadone pills and one Ambien pill. The twisted motive behind his actions is unknown. This was not an ‘Oh my god, the baby got into my methadone’ accident. The murder of the child was planned and carried out by one cold-hearted sonuvabitch. Ian Kohn, 27, is now being charged with murder, drug delivery resulting in death, endangering the welfare of children, possession of controlled substance, and possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. He is being held without bail.
Let’s have a look at Kohn’s criminal history. June, 2003; possession of drug paraphernalia. NovemberNovember reviews, 2003; theft, firearms violation. January, 2004; unlawful taking. September, 2004; possession with intent to deliver and recklessly endangering another person. Was sentenced to two years in prison. February, 2007; possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sentenced to one year. May, 2007; possession of drug paraphernalia. Sentenced to twenty-three months. Feburary, 2008; disorderly conduct. Regular revolving-door type of guy here…
And Joseph’s mother? Where was she while her child was being slowly killed? Sarah Cortlessa, 28, is behind bars facing charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property. With parents like these two, the kid didn’t stand a chance.

I have no clue why he would give the baby methodone, maybe a fucked up baby was entertaining to him?
I’m guessing the ambien was probably to get the poor little guy to go to sleep. I mean, nothing’s a bigger buzz kill than a cranky two year old.

The mom was nowhere around. She is in jail. She may not be innocent, but she may not have known what was going on if the child didn’t visit her or if she was unable to call home frequently.

I agree with you. I mean, it’s not like the woman is earning any mommy of the year awards for landing herself in jail, but she wasn’t the one slipping him drugs, and she wasn’t even there to see it or prevent it. For all we know, she could be sitting in that cell, thinking of how she’s going to get her life straight and do right by her kid, and then all of a sudden news from the warden that her angel is dead.
Sarah, if you ever see this, I hope, you live a straight life, a life of thievery and drug addiction is no way to live, and I hope you have better choice in men in the future. If you have another child, do what you have to do, to stay out of jail and protect them.

With doses like that? I’m not so sure it was just to relax the kid. Especially since he “upped” the dose on that last day – and gave him ambien on top of it. I think he fully intended for the child to die that day. The ambien possibly was this asswipe thinking he was being “humane” in helping the baby die in his sleep. Un-fucking- real. My guess – with mom in jail, raising “jr.” was getting in the way of his criminal, druggie lifestyle. Maybe, he even thought no one would be smart enough to figure out how “jr.” died. After all – how many brain cells could this human waste have left?
I hope this murdering slug dies slowly and painfully – mostly, painfully.

Maybe Zibarro, but I guess I am assuming that this jackass was taking so much that he wouldn’t think that the dosage he gave his son was that much. The fact that, in his statements, he didn’t “offer” a reason for giving it to the baby only solidifies my theory that it was meant to kill him. Had he said “Clayton wouldn’t be quiet, so I gave him a few to make him calm” or “He wouldn’t go to sleep so I gave this to him to make him sleep” or “He wouldn’t sit still, so I gave it to him to chill him out” – I could believe accidentally on purpose. Not saying “why” tells me – “I was tired of taking care of him so I intentionally over dosed him”. Sick, disgusting mother fucker. As you said – unforgivable.

Sick, sick man! If you CAN’T or DON’T want to take care of your children, give them to someone who CAN and WANTS to! It’s just that simple! Maybe he was waiting for mom to get out of jail so he kept him, even so, couldn’t he have found someone to take care of the baby until she got out?!
I think something else that really amazes me in some of these stories is where are the extended families of these people? What ever happened to close knit families that watched out for each other and would stand in front of these kids like a mama bear willing to risk everything just to protect them?

He wasn’t so high that he didn’t know to tell the cops he gave him 4 methadone and an Ambien. After the first dose of any of that I can’t imagine the baby did anything but lie there – so why any other doses? I agree that his thinking wasn’t clear because of his own drug use but DAMN there seems no other explanation except that he DID NOT CARE if his son died… that much is clear.

I guess from the other side though why did he keep giving him doses? If he did want his son to die, why not do it all at once……give him enough to overdose the first time. Again though even if that was his thought process, he was playing with fire and that is just plain unforgivable.

It seems pretty obvious the man didn’t want the kid in his life. The child had to be malnourished since being unconscious most of the time, feedings were few and far between, I’m sure. The lazy ass druggie had plenty of reasons he wanted a quite baby, and all of them took more of his time than being a father. The child didn’t have a chance.

What a piece of shit…and what’s up with the prevalence of heroin in the NE? I was discussing this with friends the other night…we have all seen a lot of fuckers around here on meth and coke, but none of us has ever met a real junkie before, or even seen heroin around. Thank God for that, I guess, but it is puzzling.

Um he obviously planned on this kid dying. He said so himself before he confessed that one tablet fucked him up, and he KNEW a kid wouldn’t be able to survive off of any more than this. He knowingly upped this dosage all the way up to four pills and added a little Ambien in with it. Anyone who says he wasn’t intentionally trying to kill his child is delusional. And even though this really doesn’t matter, who gives there child Gatorade in their fucking bottle?

Actually, X core, my nephew drinks gatorade, at the doctor’s order’s. I don’t remember why, but I know he’s only allowed four ounces of juice a day. Instead of making the kid only drink soy milk all day, he can drink gatorade as well.
Maybe, he kept giving the slightly larger doses, because he did want to kill his son, but wanted to use as little of his stash to do it. When one dosage didn’t work, the next day, he would up it, in hopes that it worked, and he would only have to use the minimum of his stash? Just a guess.

I am Joey’s cousin on his mothers side. We dont really speak to that part of the family due to the fact that they are all addicts. It hurts very badly that this has happened. Joey died on March 17, today is April 15 they just burried him yesterday. The whole f…ing family there deserves to rott. And please everyone dont think that the babies mom(if thats what you want to call her) is inocent. She is far fom that. She has two other children whom she could care less. And she is in jail pregenant with the baby killers baby again. She is also an addict and Joey was born addicted, so she was killing him as well, by using while pregenant. Messed up. My biggest problem is that the baby was killed and it could have been prevented. He never got the chance to know what love is and i think he finally will now. It hurts very bad to say that but it is true. That was the hardest thing i have ever done seeing him in his casket. I have a two year old little girl and couldnt imagine someone doing something like this to her. The fact that im related to these monsters is upsetting. My only concerns now are her other two children and the one shes carrying. Someone needs to stand up for these babies, i am trying but im only one person. As a maternal family member to little Joey these are the things we would like to know too. Joey lived with his sperm doner father and the paternal grandmother. I wonder why she didn’t notice that something was very wrong the days leading up to this HORRIFIC crime. Trust me when I tell you that this baby is in a far better place than the one he was in.
