Samantha, Bianca, and Saraphina Revelus
Milton, MA–Samantha ‘Princesse’ Revelus, 17, was on the honor roll and heading to UMass Boston in the fall. It was just five years ago that Samantha and her younger sister, 9-year-old Saraphina moved to the states from Haiti. Not a typical teen, Samantha put boys and romance on hold, focusing on her studies instead. ‘She would just come home and do homework and go to church on Sunday,’ said Jessica Revelus of her adopted sister.
Bianca Revelus just turned five on Friday. She was an outgoing preschooler hooked on cartoons, grapes, and yogurt. She loved to tease her family and playmates with mischief and games. On the day of her death, her birthday cake sat on the kitchen table, awaiting candles and a giggly little girl to make a wish and blow them out. Samantha won’t be attending college and Bianca will never see another birthday. Both girls were brutally and viciously murdered by their brother, 23-year-old Kerby Revelus. (Myspace)
The massacre took place within minutes. Shortly before 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Samantha called 911 and told dispatchers she had been wounded by her brother and that she was dying. She had been stabbed numerous times. Saraphina then took the phone and continued to speak with 911 dispatchers, telling them her brother was attacking her sister. Just moments later, the first officer arrived at the home, heard screaming, and kicked in the door.
The scene that unfolded in front of him will probably haunt him for the rest of his life. He entered the apartment just in time to witness Kerby decapitate 5-year-old Bianca. ‘The assailant was armed with a knife and had the 5-year-old by the neck and severed her head immediately,’ Chief Richard Wells said. Immediately after, Kerby took off after Saraphina, chasing the frightened child through the apartment. Cornering her in a bedroom, he began stabbing and slashing the child. Samantha’s lifeless body lay nearby.
By then, a total of four cops were on the scene, ordering Kerby to drop his weapon. He didn’t comply…two officers opened fire and shot him dead. Saraphina was rushed out of the home and taken to Boston Medical Center suffering multiple stab wounds to her stomach, hands, and legs. She is recovering with her parents by her side and is expected to survive.
The question now is, why? Police said that ‘Kerby had been involved in a fistfight Friday night with a next-door neighbor, a conflict that precipitated the violent knife attack on his three younger sisters.’ It’s possible that Samantha was concerned over the level of violence Kerby had displayed in the fight and voiced her concerns to her parents. She was Kerby’s first target. We may never know the twisted reasoning behind his violent attack, and he certainly isn’t talking.
Friends and relatives say that Kerby had been depressed in recent weeks because the weapons charge on his record was preventing him from finding a job. He ‘felt like he was nothing.’ He had recently been released from prison following a gun charge in 2007. Police also responded to the home in 2004 after Revelus reportedly punched a woman living there. A neighbor revealed that Kerby had been acting strange lately–‘waxing philosophical about the meaning of life, telling weird stories, even stealing a pair of his underwear.’ Kerby was often seen walking down the street, talking to himself, and drinking from a bottle in a brown bag.
Jessica Revelus said her parents, Regine and Vronze, were at work when the attack occurred. The childrens’ grandmother, Philomene Dorvil, was tending to laundry in the basement when the massacre unfolded. Regine is beside herself, Jessica said. ‘She is just like, ‘I can’t believe I have to bury three kids.’ ‘ Vronze was especially attached to his youngest, Bianca. Jessica said Kerby and Bianca were her biological siblings. Their parents adopted Samantha and Saraphina and brought them from Haiti around 2004. Saraphina’s father is the nephew of Samatha’s father, who died in Haiti.
The first four cops on the scene were treated for shock and trauma by doctors at Milton Hospital. ‘The toughest thing is the innocent victims who were killed,’ Chief Wells said. ‘But the fact that they were there to see it in technicolor – it’s a lot for a human being to carry. No matter what commendations they get, it’ll be a while before they realize the good that they did.’ The officers involved were placed on administrative leave and were receiving counseling from the Boston Police Department stress unit.
