“It’s a tragedy,” said Walsh, noting that Cates spent 61 days in jail waiting for her day in court. If convicted, Cates faced prison terms of up to life.
Hours later, the mother of the 13-year-old boy told The Salt Lake Tribune her son was so upset about dismissal that he tried to kill himself by jumping from her car on the way home.
“My son is a really good person and [this case] has put him through hell,” she said, noting the boy had told his story to police, testified at a preliminary hearing and steeled himself for the jury trial. “It’s not right!”
The boy’s mother said she does not understand why prosecutors had not presented the case to a jury, despite changes in the roommate’s testimony.
“[The roommate] actually walked in and caught the two of them [having sex],” the woman said.
Alicia Cook, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake County District Attorneys Office, called the roommate “a neutral witness” who provided last-minute details that were “contradictory to what victim was saying.”

I can’t imagine those poor, poor boys being encouraged to dip their wicks into her fish taco.

At that age, aren’t tween/teen boys wanting a piece of whatever they can dip the “wick” into?

I guess if I were a man-child, I would deny this one so heavily I would have to seek counseling on my own 20 years down the road for PTSD!

I wouldn’t bet my child’s safety on that feeling.

Twenty years from now when the ‘guys’ are recounting their old “first flames” and their “first rites of passage into manhood”, these poor kids will have to excuse themselves from the conversation and find a place they can puke and cry. She should be executed!

I hate to laugh at such a serious subject – but this one did me in!

How is a world like that supposed to work? You may want to consider the flip side too – people who are distrustful are people I immediately mark off as people not to be trusted, since we’re all naturally inclined to ascribe our own nature to others, lol.

True.. but I hate to find out the hard way. This is obvisously an extreme.. and not practical… but I do believe that in today’s society in particular, we HAVE TO KNOW KNOW KNOW KNOW KNOW who our kids are with. In days of preachers molesting kids, and teachers, and day care workers, and so on and so forth.. its SOOOO un-nerving as a parent. Especially when your children dont talk yet to tell you what they are subjected to. You really do need to analyze and re-analyze and then one more time before you leave your children with ANYONE! I know that we cant worry about everything… and be soooo protective.. but the thought of burrying my children is enough for me to atleast try to protect them as much as I possibly can! Being a parent is tough.. I’d like to meet or maybe hate to meet the people that think parenting is easy.. but its rewarding and thats why we want to protect our sweet little ones!
